COURSE STRUCTURE

COURSE: ENL101 ENGLISH COMPOSITION I (3.0 cr.)

PREREQUISITE:
A pass in the English Placement Test or its equivalent

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Practice in effective writing with experience in a variety of types of writing: descriptive writing, argumentative
writing, narrative writing, expository writing, discursive writing, and a combination of these types.
In the early part of the course the simpler forms of paragraph development (chronological and spatial) are
studied. Required for ENL 102 (English Composition II).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
This course is designed to:
 develop students in writing clear paragraphs relevant to different situations and audiences.
 develop students with the knowledge and skills in writing cohesive and short essays.
 develop students with the knowledge and skill appropriate transitional linkers or phrases.
 develop students with the knowledge and skills in developing thesis statement, topic and supporting
sentences relevant to different rhetorical functions.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Successful students will be able to:
 write topic sentences, supporting sentences and concluding sentences.
 outline a paragraph on a given topic with a proper topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding
sentence.
 write paragraphs with different rhetorical functions – narrative and argumentative-persuasive essay.

COURSE FORMAT:
Lecture / Instructional Hours: 3 hrs per week, Tutorial: 1 hr per week.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY:
Lectures, Tutorials, Laboratory work, delivered in a Blended mode (combination of Face to Face and Online
mode)

STUDENT EVALUATION:
Assessment (In-Class Works and Assignments): 30%; Projects: 20%; Mid-Term: 20%
*Final Examination: 30%

* Final Examination is compulsory

FINAL EXAMINATION FORMAT:


Duration: 2 hrs
Answer all questions: Grammar, sentence structures, outline construction, etc. (50 marks)
Write an essay of about 400 words on any one of the three given topics (50 marks).

A+ (96% – 100%), A (90% – 95%), A- (86% – 89%), B+ (82% – 85%), B (78% – 81%), B- (74% – 77%),
C+ (70% – 73%), C (65% – 69%), C- (60% – 64%), D+ (55% – 59%), D (50% – 54%), F (Below 50%)
