- AVECS Smart-UPS SUA 1500 VA/230 V AC, GE3030G007; order No. 390000471

1.1 Software Releases

So far, different software releases do not exist.

1.2 Hardware Versions

Some pcb’s and units are labelled with a sticker which shows the Revision (Rev.) and the print version
(for pcbs only). Modifications on a pcb or a unit cause a new revision which is marked by a figure (-, 01,
02, 03...). The numbering of the Rev. is continuous, even when a new print is used for a pcb. If no revi-
sion is marked, the first revision number on the label is valid.
The print version of a pcb is marked by means of characters. The original version is marked with "-"; the
following versions are marked with A, B, C, ... . Sometimes it is possible to update pcbs with an older
print version to a higher revision, and so the print version is not a reliable characteristic for the revision
of a pcb.

Rev., marked by "X" Order No. Item No. of Serial No.

able in good time.
This advice and these recommendations are given on the basis of our up-to-date practical experience
and to the best of our knowledge. However, they are given without any commitment. As far as is permis-
sible, any liability on the part of SAM Electronics for resulting damage is expressly ruled out, regardless
of whether the damage is of a direct or indirect nature.
Unusual shipbuilding shapes, additions or superstructures as well as environmental influences can impair
the functioning of the equipment. We are, of course, willing to help the customer with optimizing solutions
subject to suitable commercial arrangements.
The customer is responsible for ensuring that SAM Electronics equipment is installed properly according
to our instructions and in compliance with the regulations issued by the relevant classification society and
national authorities.

1.4 Safety Warnings

WARNING
This unit contains electrostatic sensitive devices.
Observe precautions for handling.

The discharge of electrostatic energy into a semiconductor can destroy the semiconductor or change its
properties. Before a unit’s housing is opened to remove or touch a board, the service equipment, Order
No. 586-5011, must be used.
1. The mat must be positioned at the workplace.
2. The potential equalization cable must be connected to the snap fastener and the clamp to a suitable
protective earth contact. The cable contains a 1 MΩ resistor which must not be removed.
3. The wrist band must be put on. When the spiral cable is connected to the snap fastener, the
discharge line is established.
4. Thoroughly grounded soldering, measurement and test tools must be used. If these tools are
supplied with power from the 230 VAC mains, this supply must be protected by a fault current plug,
stock No. 593-8099.
Boards and units that contain ESD-endangered semiconductors are marked with the symbol shown
above.
All assisting persons who might come into contact with the endangered boards must also use the ESD
equipment.

AVECS Smart-UPS 1 General
Technical Manual 1.4 Safety Warnings

DANGER
It is not permissible to connect the ship’s mains to the
system before setting-to-work by a qualified technician.
The mains must be switched off (e.g. by means of a
common isolating switch or a circuit breaker) in the ship’s
supply or the mains cable must be disconnected until
setting-to-work takes place.

Capacitors and tubes can store dangerous voltages for

several hours, even when they have been disconnected
from the supply voltage.

WARNING
Pay attention to the regulations for the prevention of accidents.

DANGER
Even when the system is switched off, there might be a
dangerous voltage present on exposed contacts. Therefore,
before a unit is opened, it must be ensured that the elec-
trical supply to all units is, and remains, disconnected from
the ship’s mains.

Deenergizing Safety
If the UPS has an internal power source (battery), the
output may be energized when the unit is not connected to
an AC power outlet.

To deenergize the UPS, press the OFF button for more than
one second to switch the equipment OFF. Disconnect the
UPS from the mains supply. Unplug the battery connector
and push the Test button to deenergize the capacitors.

Battery Safety

- This equipment contains potentially hazardous voltage. Do not attempt to disassemble the unit. The
only exception is for equipment containing batteries. Battery replacement using the procedures in
Section 6 is permissible. Except for the battery, the unit contains no user parts which requires
service. Repairs are to be performed only by factory trained service personnel.
- Do not dispose of batteries in a fire. The batteries may explode.
- Do not open or mutilate batteries. They contain an electrolyte that is toxic and harmful to the skin
and eyes.
- Do not connect the terminals of a battery or battery pack with a wire or other electrically conductive
objects.
- To avoid personal injury due to energy hazard, remove wristwatches and jewellery such as rings
when replacing the batteries. Use tools with insulated handles.
- Replace batteries only with the same number and type of batteries or battery packs as originally
installed in the equipment.
- The UPS is shipped with the battery connector unplugged. The connector is connected during the
installation procedure.

AVECS Smart-UPS 2 Overview
Technical Manual 2.1 Smart UPS

2 Overview

The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is designed to prevent blackouts, brownouts, sags, and surges
from reaching your computer and other valuable electronic equipment. The UPS filters out small utility
line fluctuations and isolates your equipment from large disturbances by internally disconnecting from the
mains supply. The UPS provides continuous power from its internal battery until the mains supply returns
to safe levels.
The UPS has a serial interface which is connected to the SAM Electronics system. By means of this serial
connection it is possible to trigger off the power down process of the SAM Electronics system to prevent
a system crash when the internal battery of the UPS is exhausted.

2.1 Smart UPS

The UPS itself is available in a version with a capacity of 1000 VA and in a version with a capacity of
1500 VA.
The mains supply must be 230 V, 50/60 Hz. The UPS is delivered with all necessary cables and acces-
sories (mounting kit)

2.2 Junction Box

To connect ship’s cables and SAM equipment to the UPS it is necessary to use a junction box
GE3030G005 or GE3030G008. The junction box is designed to interface the mains supply, the load, the
alarm and the serial interface cables.

2.3 Compatibility to SAM Electronic Systems

The UPS replaces the former used Riello UPS without restrictions. The serial link of the UPS works with
all devices which support this functionality, so as the CHARTPILOT. In case of an exchange, the serial
cable between junction box and UPS must be replaced, too.
The driver for the AVECS Smart-UPS is included in newer versions of the application software of the
CHARTPILOT or MULTIPILOT 910x. See the technical manuals of the CHARTPILOT/MULTIPILOT for
further information.

2.4 Secondary Loads

With a software version 5.22 on the CHARTPILOT it is possible to supply another two CHARTPILOTs or
MULTIPILOTs 910x by means of one UPS. All loads are shut down automatically five minutes after mains
supply fails.

Technical Manual 3.1 General Recommendations

3 Installation Recommendations

3.1 General Recommendations

3.1.1 Cables

Cable types, cable data, maximum cable length, special instructions for cable laying and connection
details are defined in the Cabling Documents of the corresponding equipment (consisting of schematic
diagram, remarks, cable list and connection diagram).
Interface connections should be discussed and agreed with SAM Electronics
In order to ensure proper functioning of the equipment, the cable types should be selected according to
the cable lists.
The designations for the cables are based on the German Standards "DIN".
In general, the following points must be taken into account:
- The cables must be marked by the electrician at both ends with the cable numbers corresponding
to the SAM Electronics Cabling Documents.
- Where necessary, particular cable glands - marked with letters and/or numbers - are assigned to
the cables.
The identification letters and numbers are stated in the connection diagrams; they are either fixed to
the unit or can be seen from the outline drawings (...BZ or ...MB).
- All cables should be kept as short as possible, especially coaxial cables to minimize attenuation of
signal.
- Coaxial cables should be installed in separate signal cable channels/tubes and at least 10 cm away
from power supply cables. Crossing of cables should be done at right angles (90°). Coaxial cables
should not be exposed to sharp bends, which may lead to change the characteristic impedance of
the cable. The minimum bend radius should be 5 times the cable’s outside diameter.
- It must be ensured that all cables - including their screens - are passed into the units in contin-
uous lengths and are not terminated before reaching the destination equipment. This is not valid
for the use of cable glands with grounding inserts.
- In the case of a unit whose cable inlet consists of a hole with brackets attached on the inside
and outside, the cable must be dressed as shown in Figure 3-1.
- With multicore cables, it is useful to strip down and lace the single wires according to the terminal
sequence.
- Receptacle-type cable terminals included in the delivery must be crimped to the connecting leads
by means of a suitable pair of AMP pliers. If a terminal board of a unit has no tabs for the above-
mentioned receptacles, other suitable cable terminals must be used.
- Existing cable grippers in the units must be used.
- All cable connections must be carefully checked after completion of the cable work and all cable
screens must be grounded via the shortest possible connections - if not stated otherwise in the
Cabling Documents/Connection Diagram.
- All cables must be secured by means of suitable clamps (pull-relief) before entering the units.

3 Installation Recommendations AVECS Smart-UPS
3.1 General Recommendations Technical Manual

- When soldering stripped coaxial cables to connectors, it must be ensured that the central
conductor and the screening do not produce a short circuit. A short-circuit check after installation is
advisable.
- It must be ensured that cables do not block any moving parts within a unit.
- Stuffing tubes exposed to the open air must, without fail, be sealed with compound.
- Power leads must be protected by "slow-blow" fuses according to their cross section.

3.1.2 Electronics Units

Dimensions, weights, spaces required for service and maintenance and special installation instructions
are stated in the outline drawings and installation drawings of the corresponding unit. In general, the
following points also apply:
- The useful life of the components of all Electronics Units (Display Units, Pulse Generators, Trans-
ceivers, UPS etc.) generally decreases with increasing ambient temperature; it is therefore advis-
able to install such units in air-conditioned rooms. If there are no such facilities - e.g. deckhouse or
space near or below the water line - these rooms must at least be dry, adequately ventilated and
kept at a suitable temperature in order to prevent the formation of condensation inside these units.
- With most Electronic Units, cooling takes place via the surface of the casing.
The cooling must not be impaired by partial covering of the unit as a result of insulation (if any) of
the room (the wall on which the casing is mounted), or by installation of the unit in a confined
cabinet.
Furthermore, the distance from the ceiling and the floor or from a unit situated underneath must be
at least 500 mm.

14 ED3046G242 / 02 (2005-07)
t_au_e03.fm / 07.07.05
AVECS Smart-UPS 3 Installation Recommendations
Technical Manual 3.2 Specific Recommendations

- For service purposes, a power socket (AC 220/230 V) and adequate lighting are necessary in the
vicinity of each electronics unit.
- In the area of the wheel house, the distance of each electronics unit from the magnetic standard
compass or the magnetic steering compass must not be less than the permitted magnetic protec-
tion distance.
This distance is measured from the centre of the magnetic system of the compass to the nearest
point on the corresponding unit concerned.
- Units which are to be used on the bridge wing must be installed inside the "wing control console" -
protected against the weather - if they do not at least correspond to the enclosure type IP 56. In
order to avoid misting of the viewing screen, 25 ... 50 W console-heating (power depending on the
volume) is recommended.
- When selecting the site of a unit, the maximum cable lengths have to be considered according to
the notes in the cabling documents (remarks, cable list).
- The accessibility for maintenance and service (stated in the outline drawings or installation draw-
ings) must be considered.
- When a unit is being installed, the base, floor or bulkhead must be checked to ensure that it is
flat in order to avoid twisting of the unit when the fixing screws are tightened, because such twisting
would impair mechanical functions. Any unevenness should be compensated for by means of
spacing-washers.
- The grounding screws of the units must be connected to the body of the ship (ground); the wire
used should have a cross sectional area of at least 6 mm.
Aboard fibreglass (GRP) vessels, a "grounding network" with a high conductance - taking into
consideration the working frequencies of the other equipment - must be provided in order to achieve
satisfactory EMC (electromagnetic compatibility).
- In the interests of safety during maintaining or servicing, the shipyard should provide a common
isolating switch or circuit breaker (in conjunction with a contactor, if necessary) for all intercon-
nected equipment.
- Transportation damage, even if apparently insignificant at first glance, must immediately be exam-
ined and be reported to the freight carrier. The moment of setting-to-work of the equipment is too
late, not only for reporting the damage but also for the supply of replacements.
- The equipment should never be switched on by the electricians who did the installation work
- not even just for a moment - never!
This is a job for the authorised SAM Electronics service engineer.
- After hand-over of the equipment in good operating condition to the customer, the Installation
Report (Annex of the Warranty Certificate) should be filled in completely and then forwarded to SAM
Electronics, Hamburg, as proof of such fulfilment. It is important that these requirements be fulfilled
in order to avoid the risk of losing the warranty.

3.2 Specific Recommendations

- In the order to maintain compliance with the EMC directive, output cords attached to the UPS should
not exceed 10 m in length.
- To reduce the risk of fire, connect only to a circuit provided with a 15 A maximum branch circuit over-
current protection or in accordance with country specific electrical code.
- Pluggable equipment includes a protective earth conductor that carries the leakage current from the
load device. Total leakage current must not exceed 3.5 mA

It is possible to connect up to three systems (CHARTPILOT, MULTIPILOT 910x) as a load to the UPS
(pay attention to the total power consumption of the systems and the capacity of the UPS) which are shut
down automatically five minute after a lack of mains supply.
It is not necessary to install additional data cables for this purpose. Only one of the systems is connected
to the UPS via a serial link. This system transmits the data via LAN to the other systems.

Battery Charge
The charger maintains battery charge when the UPS is plugged in and utility voltage is present.

Front Panel Elements

Load Status
The LED display shows the load status of the UPS. When all five LEDs are lit, the connected
equipment consumes between 85% and 100% of the available power. The values in percent are
not printed on the front panel. From bottom to top the, values of the LEDs are 17/33/50/67/85%.
Battery Charge
The LED display shows the battery charge status of the UPS. When all five LEDs are lit, battery
is fully charged. From bottom to top, the values of the LEDs are 0/24/48/72/96%.
As a warning for a low battery all LEDs flash.
Overload Warning
The UPS emits an alarm tone and the LED is illuminated when an overload condition occurs (the
load equipment exceeds the specified maximum load). The alarm remains until the load is reduced
to the maximum load.
In overload condition, the UPS continues to supply power as long as it is supplied with mains and the
breaker does not trip. The UPS will not provide power from the batteries in case of mains voltage
loss.
If a continuous overload occurs while the UPS is on-battery, the UPS turns off to protect itself from
possible damage.
On Battery
When the LED is lit, the UPS is supplying battery power to the connected load. The UPS supplies
battery power. The alarm stops, when the UPS returns to normal operation.
Replace Battery
If the battery self-test detects a failure and the LED is lit. If the LED is flashing, the battery is
disconnected. The UPS repeats the alarm every five hours. The alarm stops, if the battery passes
the self-test.
On-Line
The on-line LED is lit, when the UPS is supplying power to the load. If the LED is not lit, the UPS
is supplying battery power.
AVR Trim
The LED is lit to indicate, that the UPS is compensating for a high mains voltage.
AVR Boost
The LED is lit to indicate, that the UPS is compensating for a low mains voltage.

5.4 Self-test Technical Manual

5.4 Self-test

A self-test is performed automatically, when the UPS is switched on. An automatic self-test is performed
every two weeks (after permanent operation).
To start the self-test manually during normal operation, press the ON button for a few seconds.
During the self-test, the UPS briefly operates the connected load on-battery. If the UPS passes the self-
test, it returns to normal operation.
If the UPS fails the self-test, the LED is lit. The connected load is not affected by the failed test.
In case of a failed test, the battery must be charged for 24 hours and the self-test must be performed
again. If it fails, the battery must be changed.

Display of mains power

The UPS has a diagnostic feature which displays the mains power voltage at the input. To display the
voltage, the ON button must be pressed for a few seconds, than the Battery Charge LEDs are used to
display the value. From bottom to top, the values of the LEDs are 196/213/229/248/266 V. The measured
voltage is higher than the LED with the highest value that is lit, but lower than the value of the next LED.
If no LED is lit, the mains voltage is extremely low. If all five LEDs are lit, the mains voltage is extremely
high and should be checked.
NOTE:
A self-test is started during the measurement.

5.5 Adjustment of the Voltage Sensitivity

The UPS detects line distortions (spikes, notches, dips, swells). The UPS reacts to such distortions by
switching to on-battery operation to protect the connected load. It is possible to reduce the sensitivity of
the detection to conserve the battery capacity and its service life, if the load is able to work under such
conditions.
To reduce the sensitivity, press the Voltage Sensitivity button next to the serial interface at the rear of
the UPS with a pen or another pointed device. Press once to reduce to medium sensitivity (LED dimly
lit). Press twice to reduce to low sensitivity (LED off). Press a third time to set back to high sensitivity.

5.6 Input Circuit Breaker

If the plunger on the circuit breaker (Overload Protector, rear) pops out, reduce the load on the UPS and
press the plunger in.
Circuit Breaker Ratings:
Smart-UPS 1500I = 12 A
Smart-UPS 1000I = 10 A

5.7 Alarm Output

The alarm output signals a power input failure. The alarms are also transferred via the serial interface to
the load units.
