The Link of Two Worlds

It is the year 2142, the world’s environment has been destroyed by human life, in our

desperation, humans left to colonize other worlds. I, Jack Seraph, am one of the few humans still

living on Earth. When we decided to abandon Earth, everyone who could not afford a ticket to

the space stations were left behind. My parents survived on Earth with the same techniques I still

use, by using heavy machinery, I convert the Carbon dioxide in the air into oxygen that I can

then load up into metal tanks to breathe. Much of the world’s infrastructure has collapsed with

the abandonment of the planet and those of us left have to deal with our problems ourselves. I

live in Dayton, Ohio, and I have not seen other humans in a long time, shortly after the

Abandonment, humans started dying by the tens of thousands, animals and plants were already

almost extinct. The life expectancy has dropped down to only 43 years old. Many of the doctors

that are left suffer from the same thing all the rest of humans do, lung diseases and respiratory

problems. The world is dead, my only hope is to find a way to get to one of the space stations

still orbiting the Earth.

I awoke to strange noises, they sounded like animal noises, but the few animals that are

still alive are evolved and rare. I have been planning a trip to what is left of California, there are

many vehicles left that still work and plenty of gasoline since there are not many people left. I

decided to take all of my food, water, and oxygen so I could try to set up a living area. I once

heard that the scientists left on Earth were working on the Neutrino Interdimensional Transporter

(NIT), they said it would still take us to Earth but a better version of it. I drove all day and ended

up making it to Kansas City. I found a decent building and decided to sleep there; I am starting to

wonder if I am the last person left on Earth. I woke up very early the next day, just before the

suns glare through the thick coat of smog. Again, I drove all day, attempting to go as far as

possible. I ended up in Denver Colorado, as I was driving through the city I started seeing

remnants of shelters that seemed abandoned only a year or so ago. There was no sign of any

humans, dead or alive, but at least they had been here in recent years. I got a decent amount of

sleep and started up the car bright and early. My anticipation of getting to California kept

growing, wondering about what I would find. I decided I was not going to stop until I made it to

my destination. After a long day of driving, I arrived in Eastern California, an area the survivors

called new San Francisco.

Three months have passed, I have assembled a new Oxygen machine and a shelter that

has been my home, I am starting to think I will never find the NIT, food is much harder to find

now. A few days later, I woke up to hearing voices, afraid I was going crazy, I tried to go back to

sleep. The voices drew closer to my location, they must have seen me go into my shelter. Once I

heard them at my door they asked, “survivor, do you need help?” I reluctantly walked outside,

only to see clean, well dressed, humans. I could not speak, my surprise of other humans living

and looking so well knocked the air out of me. After a couple of minutes I responded saying,

“yes.” They took me into a great building where there was an old door with a key card scanner.

They forced open the door and led me inside a massive room. To my amazement, the NIT was

there, glowing vibrantly and emitting a sound like heaven. They looked at me and without any

words, I understood. This would take me away from this broken planet, hopefully to somewhere

better. I walked through, all I could see was a bright white light. My senses calmed down and left

me in the same room I had just left, but clean and new looking. The people came through shortly

after, they walked me outside. The doors to the outside world opened slowly and I found a

perfect world, clean, bright, and sweet smelling. This world had technology I could never

imagine, cars flying through the air with water spraying out them, kids playing nearby. I asked

the strangers with me how all of it was possible, they responded by saying, “alternative energy

was our salvation.”
