1.1 Prepare tools, materials, and equipment in technical drawing

Duration: 5 days

What I Need To Know

Most architectural drafting works generally consist of freehand and

mechanical drawings. In this module, you will learn how to prepare all drafting
tools, materials, and equipment needed for the job.

It is presumed that all students like you are already aware of the tools and
materials needed in drafting works considering your learning in the previous year
level. However, it is still necessary that you will review the past lesson to help you
At the end of this module you are expected to:
1. identify the different tools and equipment in drafting;
2. explain the uses of each tools and equipment;
3. classify the following tools and equipment; and
4. create borders.

What I Know

PRE-TEST: You will be challenged to dig deeper into your prior knowledge
and previous experiences about Mechanical Drafting. This phase will guide
you in assessing yourself by answering the questions below before you
further explore the basics of architectural layout and details.

Prepare Tools, Materials and

Lesson: Equipment in Mechanical
Drawing

Historically, the ability to draw by hand- both in creating precise

technical drawings and expressive sketches- has been central to the
architecture profession. While computer drawings are becoming more and
more involved in designer’s day-to-day, drawing still finds itself in the
process of architectural design.

What’s In

It is very important for you to know first the history of drafting before
you begin in the preparation of tools and equipment in mechanical drawing.

In your previous lesson, you learned that Drafting and design has
been around since 4000 B.C when everyone use to design fortresses on
stone tablets.

TRUE OR FALSE. Read the following statement below. Which of the

statement is true? Which of the statement is false about the history of
drafting? On your answer sheet provided, write T if the statement is true
and F if it is false.

5
______ 1. Drawing in the past were used to express ideas and make them
reality, which were easily understood.
______ 2. Leonardo da Vinci was one of the person’s that used singing to
express ideas.
______ 3. There are so many different jobs for drafting and designing, some
include designing highways, parks, recreation centers, furniture or
automobiles.
______ 4. Drafting and designers are the people who make dreams not come
true.
______ 5. A drafter, draftsperson, or draughtsman is a person who makes a
drawing (technical or expressive).

What’s New
Most architectural drafting works generally consist of freehand and
mechanical drawings. In this module, you will learn how to prepare all
drafting tools, materials, and equipment needed for the job.

It is presumed that all students like you are already aware of the tools
and materials needed in drafting works considering your learning in the
previous year level. However, it is still necessary that you will review the
past lesson to help you prepare for higher drafting activity.

The basic drafting procedure is to place a piece of paper (or other

material) on a smooth surface with right-angle corners and straight sides—
typically a drawing board. A sliding straightedge known as a T-square is
then placed on one of the sides, allowing it to be slid across the side of the
table, and over the surface of the paper.

"Parallel lines" can be drawn simply by moving the T-square and

running a pencil or technical pen along the T-square's edge. The T-square is
used to hold other devices such as set squares or triangles. In this case, the
drafter places one or more triangles of known angles on the T-square—
which is itself at right angles to the edge of the table—and can then draw
lines at any chosen angle to others on the page.

Modern drafting tables come equipped with a drafting machine that is

supported on both sides of the table to slide over a large piece of paper.
Because it is secured on both sides, lines drawn along the edge are
guaranteed to be parallel.
