 OVERVIEW
Module Name: Becoming a member of society

This module on “Becoming a member of society” deals with activities that

could help the learners analyze the significance of cultural, social, political and
economic symbols and practices.

To the teacher:

In this part of the lesson, the teacher presented the agent of socialization and
political institutions which defines our social, political and economic affairs in the
society. The different kinds of authority and legitimacy practiced in politics are further
explained through a series of activities.

The primary goal of this module is to help learners engage in some interesting
and practical activities in order to deeply understand the role and impact of social
and political institutions in our society.

To the Learners:

The objectives of this module are best achieved if the learners fully
understand the important functions of social and political organizations as part
in the process of socialization. Additionally, learners are required to:

1. read and understand the instructions properly;

2. write your answers in your notebook;
3. answer the pretest prior to the lesson proper;
4. take note of the terminologies (mark and labeled as bold) cited relevant to the
study of Social Sciences;
5. self–check and compare your answers against the key answer found at the
end of this module;
6. perform critically the activities instructed in this module; and
7. answer the given assessment test after thorough study of the lessons.

2. understand the impact of economic institutions in our society; and
3. learn about different kinds of authority and legitimacy practiced in politics.

In previous chapter, you learned that culture is acquired through
socialization and enculturation. That Culture is one of the elements that is
shared by members of society. How the culture acquired by the participants
through agents of socialization and controlling factors which deviated from standard
norms of society is the salient points in this part of the lesson.

ACTIVITY 1: Think and Post: The Social Thinker!

This activity encourages social sharing to express

social concerns on participation in primary and secondary
group of socialization. Learners nowadays, find it more interesting when they are
asked to express themselves on the content of social issues that engage social
media than talking an issue without social media involvement. Thus, it builds a better
relationship among people. This focuses on bringing groups of people sharing
common interest and interactions. This provides the best options to promote them on
Facebook page through sharing their social interactions and common interest on the
social group they are with. Facebook presents a very unique opportunity to explore
and express this generation’s views and social participation. This is a large type of
viral effect of information as one of the online sources.

Suppose you are asked to express your thoughts in a social media platform
and to post in your Facebook account your involvement in any of the agents of
socialization that has a major influence in shaping your way of thinking, social and
cultural behavior.
What is the most influential agent of socialization, the family, religion, peer
group, education, or mass media? How this agent of socialization had contributed
and molded you to become a better individual in the society? Describe how this
agent of socialization had influenced your thoughts, attitudes, values and behaviour.

WHAT IS IT?
Socialization is a continuing process of social interaction
through which people acquired their identities and skills in
society. It is a learning from people to other people. It
exposes the person to the culture of society and acquire
them. An important part of socialization and enculturation
processes are the social groups which are called agents of
socialization:
The results of socialization are great because they established our identity. We
are guided how to act in a socially acceptable ways and because of socialization we
acquire culture that may improve us individuals. Socialization is also a form of social
control. It may be in the form of coercion: like punishment, economy. It may also be
in the form of language which was used as cultural symbols.
