    Atoms were first proposed by Democritus in 400 BC as small indivisible particles that make up all matter. In the early 1900s, experiments by J.J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, and others showed that atoms are mostly empty space with a small, dense nucleus at the center made of protons and neutrons, with electrons in motion around the nucleus. Later work by Niels Bohr in 1913 helped explain the structure of atoms and how they emit and absorb light.
