This module entitled Genres

of Literature is designed to be used by Senior High School students who want to develop
their literary skill. It intends to identify and explain the different genres of literature.

In doing this module, please follow these

Genre is a category of literature. The main literary genres are
prose, poetry and drama. Prose is divided into two: fiction and non-
fiction.
Fiction in literature describes imaginary events and people
while non-fiction is based on facts, real events, real people such as
biography and history.
Let’s learn further about the genres!

TYPES OF FICTION

 FANTASY- A story based on things that


could NOT happen in real life. (magic,
talking animals)
Examples:

 HISTORICAL FICTION- A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the
past. Often the setting is real, but the characters are made up from the author’s imagination.

HORROR - A story which is intended to, or has the capacity


to frighten its readers, inducing feelings of horror and terror.
Examples: The Exorcist, Goosebumps

HUMOR - A story full of fun, fancy, and excitement meant to


entertain the reader.
Examples: Diary of A Wimpy Kid Huckleberry Finn

MYSTERY - A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that


is not solved until the end of the story.
Examples: The Da Vinci Code Sherlock Holmes

TRADITIONAL LITERATURE - Stories that are passed


down from one group to another in history. This includes
folktales, legends, fables, fairy tales, tall tales, and myths
from different cultures.
Examples: Cinderella ,The Ugly Duckling

NONFICTION

- Is an account of a subject which is presented as fact.


Types of Non-Fiction

ESSAY - It is a piece of writing that talks or discusses a


specific topic.
Examples: Covid-19 Realizations My Holiday

INFORMATIONAL BOOKS - Texts that provide facts &


information about a variety of topics.
Examples: Encyclopedia, Thesaurus

BIOGRAPHY - Chronicles a person’s life story but is written by another person


Examples: The Life of Jose Rizal An open book

AUTOBIOGRAPHY– Account of a person’s life written by that person. Examples: The story of my
life Simple Girl

DRAMA

- Is the specific mode of narrative represented in performance

 COMEDY- Is a humorous story with a happy ending 5

 TRAGEDY– Is a serious story with a sad ending
Examples: Romeo and Juliet Esperanza
POETRY

- Poetry is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language—
such as sound symbolism, and meter—to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of,
the prosaic ostensible meaning.
Types of Poetry:
 LYRIC POETY - Is a comparatively short, non-narrative poem in which a single
speaker presents a state of mind or an emotional state
Examples: O Captain! My Captain! Sonnet

 NARRATIVE POETRY– A form of poetry that tells a story; the entire story is usually
written in metered verse
Examples: Beowulf The Second Coming

 DIDACTIC POETRY– The purpose of didactic or descriptive poetry is primarily to


teach something
Examples: Smoke Advice to a girl
