SESS3011 High Performance Craft – Worked Examples

Sailing Performance III

Task:
Determine the yacht speed together with sideforce and heel resistance given
the following yacht characteristics:

Fn = 0.325 =38° =18°

RF = 670N c=9 tonnes Sc = 24m2
A = 11°

Assumptions:
i) Waterline length of canoe is 10.0m
ii) Difference in yacht resistance when sailing in a realistic attitude and
when sailing with zero leeway and heel angle is captured in the
relationship:
C  C2 2 2 1
R  RT  1 FY  CH ScVS 2 2
1 2
 ScVS 2
2
( is in radians!)

iii) With a Standfast Series yacht one may assume:

RR C1 = 1.154 C2 = -0.69 1x103.CH = 9.1

1x103.  7.5
g c

Solution Requirements
V
i) Definition of Froude No: Fn 
gL
ii) Realisation that RT = RR + RF
iii) Beta theorem:  = A + B
iv) Appreciation of Equilibrium of Forces and force diagram together
with observations:

R
tan  H 
S
and FY  S when in equilibrium
so R  FY tan  H

Example III solution:

From definition of Fn we have,

VS  Fn gL
 0.325 98.1
 3.21ms 1

103 RR  7.5g  c
 7.5 x 9.81x 9 x103 (kg)
 RR  662.175N

Now
RT  RR  RF  662.175  670  1332.175N

   A  H
  H  38  11  27

Rearrange given equation,

C1  C2 2 2 1
R  FY  CH ScVS 2 2  RT
1 2
ScVS 2
2
Two unknowns, R & FY , but R  FY tan  H
By substitution,
 
 C1  C2 2  2  1 
 FY   tan  H  FY   CH ScVS   RT 0
2 2
1
 ScVS 2   2 
2 

Quadratic in FY :
b  b 2  4ac
FY 
2a

a=8.52x10-6
b=-0.5095
c=1446.642

Hence FY = 2877.1125N or 54695.149N

By back substitution, R=FYtanH = 1466N or 27869N

Discard higher value as unrealistic (cf. RT upright)
