I. Objectives
At the end of 1 hour period, the students will be able to:
1. Determine the two main types of drama – comedy and tragedy and it’s forms;
2. Participate actively in class discussion.
3. Appreciate the types of drama by performing the given excerpt.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
The teacher will let her students
watch a short video about tragedy
and comedy. Then, ask them about
their ideas.
2. Presentation
The teacher will present the two
main types of drama – comedy and
tragedy.
3. Discussion
Tragedy – serious in tone
- Usually involves death or
misfortune of one or main
characters.
- Often a historical drama
highlighting the downfall of a
hero or a great man.
 Melodrama – an exaggerated
drama
- Characters are plain and
superficial
- Classic melodrama is about a
villain, a heroine, and a hero
who must rescue the heroine
from the villain
 Problem Play – explores some
social problem, like alcoholism or
prostitution
- Often the playwright views the
problem and its solution by
challenging or rejecting the
conventional view.
- Character has conflict with the
laws, values, traditions, or
agents of society.
Comedy – light in tone
- Aims to make the audience to
laugh
 Farce – comedy with greatly
exaggerated characters and
situations
- Characters are plain and
stereotypes
- Usually involve mistaken
identities, lots of physical
humor, and offensive plot
twists.
 Musical – involve large cast and
extravagant sets and costumes
- In musical theatre, the story is
told not only through dialog
and acting but through music
and dance.

The students will be grouped into
4 and will be given script for them
to prepare for 3 min. Then,
perform for 3-4 min. each.
