Biography
Doherty (b. 1987) was introduced
to music through the Irish fiddle
tradition of his hometown of Derry.
He read music at St John’s College,
Cambridge, after which he
completed a PhD at Trinity College,
University of Dublin. He is now a

Dublin Voices, conducted by Bernie
Sherlock. Doherty is represented
by the Contemporary Music Centre,
Ireland.

Choral music
Doherty has an extensive and
varied choral catalogue, which
includes sacred and secular
(accompanied and a cappella)
works for SATB choirs of every
ability.
Doherty’s choral works have
garnered numerous awards: he
has won the Feis Ceoil choral
composition award four times
(2009, 2011, 2014, 2016), the Choir
and Organ Magazine composition
competition twice (2012, 2014),
the Jerome Hynes composition
competition, the St Giles's
Cathedral Edinburgh anthem
composition competition, the
Fragments Choral Composition
Award (in association with Historic
Scotland), and the Prix pour une
œuvre de création at the
international choral festival
Florilège Vocal de Tours, France.
Doherty’s choral pieces have
been performed by choirs
including the choir of Merton

Salisbury Cathedral, the National
Youth Choir of Scotland, the choir

About Lola Ridge
Irish-American anarchist poet Lola
Ridge (1873–1941) was an early
Modernist, a political radical, and an
ardent feminist. She was born in
Dublin, and grew up in Australia
and New Zealand, moving to San
Francisco in 1907 before settling in
Greenwich Village in 1908, where
she earned her living as a model
and factory worker while writing
and involving herself in radical
causes. Ridge published five books
of poetry, most of which were
inspired by the urban landscape of
her adoptive city of New York.
Ridge received a Guggenheim
Fellowship in 1935 and the Shelley
Memorial Award of the Poetry
Society of America in 1934 and
1935. She died of tuberculosis at
age 66.

Structure
This is a never-ending canon, so this suggested structure is not prescriptive. The Basses begin, and, with each repetition, the other voice parts enter (in the order Tenor, Alto, Soprano),
beginning at the note marked by the downward arrow. Any time after the SATB ground has been established, the two soprano soli enter: first at a canon at two-bar distance (entry
point marked by serpent), then at a canon at one-bar distance (entry point marked by dashed serpent), then, finally, together. When this final entry is completed, the process of the entries
is reversed; the parts drop out after each repetition (after the word ‘away’), beginning with the sopranos (then in the order Alto, Tenor, Bass), until only the Basses are left singing.
