1 Downlink Coordinated Multi-Point Overview

The Downlink Coordinated Multi-Point feature increases downlink

throughput in interfered radio environment. It also increases cell edge
throughput in a heterogeneous network, macro deployment, and indoor
deployment.

Access Type: LTE

Feature Identity: FAJ 121 4223
Value Package Name: CoMP
Value Package Identity: FAJ 801 0442
Node Type: Baseband Radio Node
DU Radio Node
Licensing: Licensed feature. One license for each
node.

Summary
The Downlink Coordinated Multi-Point feature makes it possible to get a higher
data throughput for interfered UEs. It enables the efficient use of network
resources and achieves higher user experience for the interfered UE. The benefit
of the feature is achieved by transmitting data on a higher bit rate to an
interfered UE. This is done by coordinating the serving and interfering cells.

The feature increases downlink throughput for cell edge users in interfered radio
environment with high intercell intra-frequency interference. The feature
improves cell edge throughput in a heterogeneous network, macro deployment,
and indoor deployment, where the overlap between the cells is large.

Additional Information
More information about this feature and related topics can be found in 3GPP TS
36.331, Event A5.

Downlink Coordinated Multi-Point

2 Dependencies of Downlink Coordinated

Multi-Point

The Downlink Coordinated Multi-Point feature conflicts with the Carrier

Aggregation feature. Limitations related to inter-DU coordination and the
number of UEs to be coordinated also apply.

Table 1 Feature Dependencies

Feature Relationship Description

Carrier Aggregation (FAJ 121 3046) Related If both the Downlink Coordinated
Multi-Point feature and the Carrier
Aggregation feature are activated,
only the primary cell is coordinated,
due to lack of measurement reports
for the secondary cell, as defined in
3GPP.

Hardware
This feature is not supported on AIR 6454 units.

Limitations
Inter-DU coordination is not supported.

The number of UEs to be coordinated is limited if there is a high load on the main
processor, due to rejected event A5.

Network Requirements
No network requirement for this feature.

3 Feature Operation of Downlink Coordinated
Multi-Point

The Downlink Coordination Multi-Point feature improves cell edge

throughput in scenarios with large cell overlap for a heterogeneous
network, macro deployment, and indoor deployment.

The feature uses downlink transmission information from serving and interfering
cells to coordinate and improve the downlink link adaptation.

7 Activate Downlink Coordinated Multi-Point

To use the feature, it must be activated following the usual feature

activation procedure.

Prerequisites

— The license key is installed in the node.

— Continuous Cell Trace Recording (CCTR) is activated since at least one week.
This ensures there is troubleshooting data available if something goes
wrong.

Steps

1. Set the attribute featureState to ACTIVATED in the applicable MO

instance, depending on node type:

Node Type License Control MO

DU Radio Node OptionalFeatureLicense=DlComp
Baseband Radio Node FeatureState=CXC4011913

2. Perform cell lock/unlock.

After This Task

Let the CCTR be active for one week, for continued collection of troubleshooting
data.

Downlink Coordinated Multi-Point

8 Deactivate Downlink Coordinated Multi-Point

If the feature is no longer needed, it can be deactivated following the usual

feature deactivation procedure. It must also be deactivated before the
activation of any conflicting feature.

Prerequisites
Continuous Cell Trace Recording (CCTR) is activated since at least one week. This
ensures there is troubleshooting data available if something goes wrong.

Steps

1. Set the attribute featureState to DEACTIVATED in the applicable MO

instance, depending on node type:

Node Type License Control MO

DU Radio Node OptionalFeatureLicense=DlComp
Baseband Radio Node FeatureState=CXC4011913

After This Task

Let the CCTR be active for one week, for continued collection of troubleshooting
data.
