GRADE 8 STUDENTS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
THROUGH REMEDIAL INDIVIDUALIZED
INSTRUCTION

I. Situation

TLE is one of the minor subject that focuses on enhancing, developing and

discovering scientific processes all around, but some students tend to find the discussion

broad and boring so teacher find ways to make the topic interesting to achieve learning

objectives.

Student interest in a topic holds so much power. When a topic connects to what

students like to do, engagement deepens as they willingly spend time thinking, dialoging, and

creating ideas in meaningful ways, with the teacher’s interest in helping the students’

progress this research attempt to address their performance in Science 8, through enhancing

students’ reading skills.

Below shows the graphical presentations of Grade 8 – Blissful reading literacy during

the School Year 2020-2021.

Figure 1 shows the reading literacy of the students in the first quarter, it shows that 10

students got a reading literacy of frustration out of 40 students. This students is subject for

intervention in reading skills.


Making learning contextual to real-world experiences is a key learning technique with

differentiating for student interests and catering their needs. Often the core content and

concepts are represented in the world beyond the classroom or school building -- in ways that

students cannot see, as if they're walking through life wearing a blindfold. When teachers

plan for content, processing, and product, differentiating by interests helps remove the

blindfold so that learners can see those invisible concepts made visible, so this study aim at

the end to arouse students interest to the subject as to meet the learning goal.

II. The Intervention

Remedial classes are often used to stress the basics in a subject such as math, science

or language. They can help students who are having problems with advanced concepts to

fully understand the basics of a subject. Students can also use them to catch up on their

behind activities. Some people look upon remedial classes as embarrassing, but they can in

fact be useful tools to gain a more complete grasp of difficult ideas or rules. Science grade of

the students in the first quarter was used to identify students who will undergo remedial class

and there are 7 of them. The intervention were started with a pretest, discussion, clarification

through hands-on problem solving and then post test result shows the effectiveness of

remedial class.

III. Summary

This study tends to enhance the performance of Grade 8 students in TLE 8. Result

shows that remedial class enhances students’ performance, in such a way that teacher aims to

cater their needs specially those topics that are difficult for them to understand during
remedial class, they also have the privilege to ask questions how to solve physics problem

step by step. Remedial class hour was held every 4:00 to 5:00 pm after class in the afternoon.

As a reflection on this research, for students who seem to lack an interest in learning

new things it may be beneficial to provide more personalized instruction. This can be done

by a parent spending time working with the student at home or by having a remedial class by

the teacher. It is also an indication for the students to get failing grade in the subject specially

if expectations are not meet by the students towards the subject, during remedial class all

expectations are meet because they are given the whole time to ask questions, as a result

failing grades are cope up with passing grade.

A teacher is a great motivator and possesses diverse teaching strategy for the students

especially for those low performers, who got failing grades. Given a chance to make a study I

would plan and research more on different teaching strategy to boost my students’ interest in

the topic especially that science is more on discovery approach and inquiry based learning.

Remedial class is also one of the most effective and widely used by the teachers to assist and

enhance more learning among students either it is individualized or group instruction still it

isn’t deny the fact that it cater the needs of the students learning performance.
