a. If there is no any external force acting on the substances, show that total momentum before collision is equal to total
momentum after collision.
b. A projectile is fired upward from ground. Show that path followed by the projectile is parabolic. Also find an expression
for time of flight and horizontal range.
c. Define the coefficient of linear and cubical expansivity and establish a relation between them.
d. Describe an experiment to determine the coefficient of real expansion of a liquid by using Dulong and Petit’s method.
3. Solve any one numerical. [4X1 = 4]
a. A ball of mass 0.2 Kg falls from a height of 45 m. On striking the ground it rebounds in 0.1 s with two-thirds of the
velocity with which it struck the ground. Calculate (i) the momentum change on hitting the ground (ii) the force on the
ball due to the impact.
b. To a person going due east in a car with a velocity of 25 km/hr, a train appears to move due north with a velocity
25√3 km/hr. What is the actual velocity and direction of motion of the train.
4. A steel tank is completely filled with 2.80 m 3 of ethanol when both the tank and the ethanol are at a temperature of
32.0 0C. When the tank and its contents have cooled to 18.0 0C, what additional volume of ethanol can be put into the
tank?  for steel = 3.6 X 10-5 /0C and  for ethanol = 75 X 10-5 /0C. [3]

their common velocity. If A had rebounded with a velocity of 2 m/s in the opposite direction after collision, what would
be the new velocity of B?
b. Two ships A and B are 4 km apart. A is due west of B. If A moves with a uniform velocity of 8 km/hr due east and B
moves with uniform velocity of 6 km/hr due south, calculate the magnitude of the velocity of A relative to B and the
closest distance apart of A and B.
4. A pendulum clock keeps correct time at 00C. Mean coefficient of linear expansion of pendulum is 17 × 10 -6 per 0C. How
many seconds per day will it lose at 200C? [3]

b. An electron having 500 eV of energy moves at right angle to a uniform magnetic field of flux density

4. What diameter must a copper wire name if its resistance is to be the same as that of an equal length of
aluminum wire diameter 3.26 mm (ρcu = 1.72x10-8Ωm ρAl = 2.75x10-8Ωm) [3]

3. Solve any one numerical. [4X1 = 4]
a. Two plane metal plates 4.0 cm long are held horizontally 3.0 cm apart in vacuum, one being vertically above
another. The upper plate is at a potential of 300 V and the lower is earthed. Electrons having a velocity of 10 x
106 ms-1 are injected horizontally midway between the plates and in a direction parallel to the 4.0 edge.
Calculate the vertical deflection of the electron beam as it emerges from the plate. (e/m for electron = 1.8 x
1011 Ckg-1)
b. The ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 254 nm falls upon a clean copper surface, the stopping potential
necessary to stop emission of photoelectrons is 0.181 V. i. What is the photoelectric threshold wavelength for
this copper surface? ii. What is the work function for this surface?
4. A resister of 500Ω and one of 2000Ω are placed in series with a 60 volt supply. What will be the reading on a
