I. OBJECTIVES
1. To provide guidelines to Biomedical Engineering (Biomed) staff to ensure that
Clinical Engineers/Technicians follow the standard precautions of infection control
prior to carrying out any remedial/preventive maintenance on equipment. This is to
provide maximum protection against any kind of infection that may get transmitted
from contaminated equipment or areas to Clinical Engineers, clinical staff and to
patients.

IV. POLICY
1. All Biomedical Engineering staff will be aware of current OHHC policies regarding
Infection Control. Employees will not knowingly expose themselves or others to any
types of Infectious Waste.
V. PROCEDURE
1. Biomedical Engineering staff shall not accept any medical device for remedial or
preventive maintenance until the equipment is cleaned/disinfected,
decontaminated, or sterilized and the end users shall verify that the approved
procedures are followed. The equipment shall have a label clearly indicating that the
equipment has been cleaned / disinfected properly and it is safe for Biomed to
perform remedial/preventive maintenance actions.
2. In general, all medical devices from any area shall be considered contaminated until
specified otherwise and shall be handled in accordance with infection control
procedures to eliminate the risks associated with contaminated equipment.
3. Biomed staff shall follow standard precautions, specific infection control procedures
that are applied in each criteria such as Operating Rooms, Intensive Care Units and
Isolation Rooms, etc., and other controlled areas in hospital.
4. This shall include wearing appropriate attire specifically approved for the area that
has potential risk associated with a medical device.
5. Biomed staff shall wear protective clothing regularly i.e., lab coats in their work area
and disposable tyvek, disposable gauntlets may also be utilized for a visible
contamination on the equipment. Dependent upon extent of visible contamination

and the risks associated with equipment, protective eye wear (goggles), and N95
Respirators, or equivalent, face shields shall also be used.
6. Clinical Engineers/Technicians shall ensure that their workbench surface areas
including the anti-static workstation are wiped down with 70% isopropyl alcohol.
Housekeepers shall perform cleaning/disinfection on a daily basis at the end of each
day.
7. Engineers/Technicians tools shall be cleaned and disinfected with a 70% Isopropyl
alcohol on a weekly basis. If certain tools are used with potentially contaminated
equipment either internally or externally then all the tools used with such
equipment shall be cleaned/disinfected or sterilized immediately after being used. 3
8. Biomed personnel shall report all illness and incidents including blood and body fluid
exposures, needle sticks, cuts, burns, etc., to his Supervisor.
9. Clinical Engineers must wear protective clothing including gloves, lab coats, etc., in
general and must adhere to Infection Control policies when specifically handling the
following types of equipment:
10. Clinical Engineers/Technicians shall not eat or drink at their work bench locations and
shall do so only in a designated area.
