1. According to a design report submitted for checking, a square cross section b/h/h’
=350/350/35mm and a mechanical reinforcement ratio of ω = 1.0 is adequate for a slender RC
column with a governing action forces of axial load plus uniaxial bending equal to 3100kN and
300kNm. The column is made of C-50 concrete and S-400 steel and has an effective buckling
length of 0.9L and L = 18m. Check the stability of the column. Use the deflection calculation aid
diagram provided. [5 pts]
a. If the column above is not capable of carrying the load without losing stability, propose
an appropriate structural measure to ensure the safety of the column? [2.5 pts]
b. Discuss the effect of sustained axial load on the load carrying capacity of columns and
illustrate this effect using load-moment curve and interaction diagram. [2.5 pts]
2. Figure 1 shows a plan of a part of a floor with beams between all columns. The edge beams have
equal width as the columns, and have a total depth of 400 mm. The floor supports its own weight,
superimposed dead load of 2.0kN/m2, for ceiling, partitions and other fixtures, and a live load of
3.5 kN/m2. The floor dimensions are indicated in the figure and the columns above and below the
slab have a center to center height of 3.5m. Use C-35 concrete, S-460 steel and Class-I works.

a. Select an appropriate depth of slab using ES/EURO code. [2.5 pts]
b. Check the limitations on use of the direct design method and design the slab using the
Direct Design Method. [2.5 pts]
c. Design the slab using the Equivalent Frame Method and compare the results with that of
part b, and comment on it. [5 pts]
