POL 101: Introduction to Political Science

GUIDELINES FOR GROUP ASSIGNMENT


Five (5) students will form a group to work on the group assignment to fulfill the requirement for POL101:
Introduction to Political Science course. A maximum of eight groups can be formed from each class.

DESCRIPTION
STEP ONE
Each group needs to identify one area/problem/sector related to politics of Bangladesh for their group assignment.
The topics may include following, (but not limited to):
[1] Elections in Bangladesh [2] Judiciary in Bangladesh
[3] Legislature in Bangladesh [4] Constitution in Bangladesh
[5] Executive Branch in Bangladesh [6] Interest Groups in Bangladesh
[7] Political Parties in Bangladesh [8] International Relations of Bangladesh
[9] Media and Politics in Bangladesh [10] Sports and Politics Bangladesh

STEP TWO
After choosing a broad topic, the groups need to identify a sub-topic/specific issue under that broad topic to focus
and finish the assignment within given time. For example, media and politics in Bangladesh has different sub-
topics, such as newspaper, radio, television etc. Each group shall identify one such sub-topic which is manageable
within the timeframe.

STEP THREE
The research will be comprised of five parts, where each group member will be responsible for two things: (i) to
work on his/her assigned part, and (ii) to collect five interviews based on a common questionnaire developed by
the group. One person in each group will be assigned to summarize the survey findings, other four members just
need to complete the interviews and submit it to that designated person. Other four members will work/write on
other four parts of the assignment as mentioned below:

The five parts are:


1. Background: Here, you shall try to explain why your topic is important providing relevant examples.
2. Policy Review/Theoretical Explanation: This part will deal with the relevant policies or theoretical
explanations relevant to your topic.
3. Summary of the Survey: You need to summarize the key findings from you survey.
4. Case Study: You have to provide an interesting and relevant case study related to your topic in details.
5. Recommendation/Reflections/Implications: This part will focus on what can other learn from your
research, and how it will lead to better outcome/situation in the area of your research.

STEP FOUR
Present your findings and submit your report by the deadline (most likely 1st/2nd week of April).

MARK DISTRIBUTION
[1] Group Presentation: 5 Points [Individual Grading]
Each Member of the groups has to make a presentation. Maximum time limit for each group is 15 minutes.
[2] Report Submission: 5 Point [Group Grading]
The limit for the report is maximum 10 pages. Specification for report submission is:
1. Font: Times/Arial/Calibri
2. Font Size: 12
3. Line Spacing: 1.0
4. Margin: Normal (1” everywhere)
