Weathering

● Weathering is what takes place when a body of rocks is exposed to the

weather in other words the forces and conditions that exist on the earth
surface. Most rocks are formed within the crust of the earth except for
volcanic.
● There are two main Weathering processes. Mechanical and Chemical
Chemical Weathering
Chemical Weathering occurs when water dissolves minerals in a rock producing new compounds. This reactions
is called hydrolysis. Hydrolysis occurs when water comes in contact with granite. Feldspar crystals inside granite
react chemically forming clay minerals.

Examples Oxidation, Carbonation, Hydration and Acidification.

Examples

Oxidation: The breaking down of rocks by oxygen and water.

Carbonation Is a mixture of water with carbon dioxide. This weathering help with cave creation.

Hydration Bonds of minerals that are changed as it interacts with water

Acidification. The process of something becoming acidic.

Mechanical Weathering

Is the process of breaking big rocks into little ones. This process happens near the earth's
surface. Temperature also affects the land. The cool night and hot day causes expansion and
contractions. This can cause rocks to crack and break apart.

Some Examples of Mechanical weathering includes frost, salt wedging, unloading, and
exfoliation, water and wind abrasions, impacts and collisions and biological actions. All of these
processes breaks rocks into smaller pieces without changing the rock physical composition.

Product of Weathering and Erosion

Erosion Is the process of eroding or being eroded by wind water or other natural agents.

Weathering materials we can find on the beach, slopes, glaciers, and in the desert. Depending on
the type rock that is being formed depends on the rock that is being formed.
