SUBJECT: NOx Sensor Modification

MODELS AFFECTED: 16-Cylinder 275GL+

The purpose of this bulletin is to inform the field

of a modified NOx sensor mounting
configuration on current engines and a new
1
service kit developed to address any issues that
might be experienced under certain operating
conditions on early production engines. 2
Some early production 275GL+ engines had NOx
sensors that sloped downward from the
turbocharger exhaust elbow. Under certain
operating conditions, this allowed condensation
or moisture to contaminate the NOx sensor,
resulting in sensor failure. Later production
engines had a modified sensor mounting to
keep the NOx sensor level (at 90 degrees) or at

an upward slope (<90 degrees) to prevent this
condition (see Figure 1). Inspect the orientation
of the NOx sensor on 275GL+ engines at the next 1 - Desired Angle 2 - Not Acceptable
service interval. Replace downward sloping NOx
sensors with the service kit listed in Table 1. Table 1: NOx Sensor Mounting Kit (P/N 495795)

7. Install the upper NOx tube to the elbow and
male connector:
a. Insert the tube into the fitting until it
bottoms in the fitting body. (NOTE: If the
fitting was disassembled, insert the ferrule
into the fitting body with the small,
tapered end first.)

b. Tighten the nut finger-tight.

6 c. Tighten the nut with a wrench an

additional 1-1/4 turns while holding the
fitting body with a second wrench. (NOTE:
It is helpful to mark the nut with a scribe or
ink to count the number of turns.)
8. Install the lower NOx tube to the fitting on the
bottom of the NOx sensor block (follow a – c
