TOPIC: Exhaust System

IDENT NO: 8-4078A

DATE: November 2016
ATGL* SUPERSEDES: 12-4078, 4-3080

and 275GL*
SUBJECT: Insulation Interference
MODELS AFFECTED: ATGL and 275GL/GL+ engines
The purpose of this bulletin is to inform the field
to inspect all exhaust insulation and insulation
springs on all 275GL+ engines to ensure that
there is not interference with the turbocharger
oil lines, coolant lines, and/or fuel lines.

! WARNING
Contact between the insulation and
piping could lead to a fire. Always
make sure there is no interference
between insulation and piping.
Failure to comply may result in
serious injury or death.
The engine is hot and can cause
burns. Always make sure the
engine is shut down and cool
before performing maintenance.
Failure to comply may result in
serious injury.
Insulation has sharp edges and/or
burrs that can cause severe cuts to
unprotected skin. Always use
caution and wear gloves when
handling the insulation. Failure to
comply may result in serious injury.

If the insulation or spring do contact the INSPECT FOR CONTACT BETWEEN THE
turbocharger oil tube, reposition the exhaust INSULATION AND COOLANT TUBES
insulation and spring to provide a minimum of
1/4 in. (6 mm) clearance between the insulation/ Inspect the exhaust insulation to verify that it
spring and the turbocharger oil tube (see does not contact the coolant tubes (see
Figure 2). Figure 3).

Figure 2: Clearance Between Insulation Spring and

Turbocharger Oil Tube

If the insulation or spring was contacting the

turbocharger oil tube, inspect the oil tube for
damage. If damage has occurred, replace the
turbocharger oil tube before returning the
engine to service.

Interference of the insulation with a coolant

tube may wear a hole in the coolant tube, which
could spray coolant and cause engine damage.
If the insulation does contact the coolant tube,
reposition the exhaust insulation to provide a
minimum of 1/4 in. (6 mm) clearance between
the insulation and the coolant tube.
If the insulation was contacting the coolant
tube, inspect the coolant tube for damage. If
damage has occurred, replace the coolant tube
before returning the engine to service.

WATER JUMPER FLEX LINES

This procedure applies to 275GL/GL+ engines.
Inspect insulation for possible contact (see
Figure 4) with water jumper flex lines. There
should be a minimum of 1/4 in. (6 mm) (see
Figure 5) clearance between the insulation and
the water jumper. If necessary, adjust the
insulation to obtain the required clearance.

and Insulation

Inspect water jumpers for any wear that may

weaken the braiding. If wear is present, replace
the jumper with updated P/N A296130F. The
updated part relocates the braided sections to
decrease the possibility of contact damage. See
Figure 6 and Figure 7.

When installing the updated water jumper, JACKET WATER AND AUXILIARY WATER
verify there is a minimum of 1/4 in. (6 mm) FLEX LINES
clearance between the insulation and the water
jumper, and also a 1/4 in. (6 mm) clearance On 12- and 16-cylinder 275GL/GL+ engines, this
between the rocker arm cover and the water procedure applies to the two jacket water and
jumper (see Figure 8). If necessary, rotate the one auxiliary water flex lines. On 16VAT27GL
water header to obtain the required clearances. engines, this procedure applies only to the
auxiliary water flex line.
Inspect the flex lines for signs of water leakage
in the braided area (see Figure 9). Moisture in
this area is an indicator that there is wear
between the braided sheathing and the inner
flex tube. Flex lines leaking in this area should be
1 replaced with updated components
P/N 296315C for jacket water and P/N 296315D for
auxiliary water. These parts have been updated
with a bronze inner braid to reduce potential
wear between the outer braid and the inner flex
tube.

INSPECT FOR CONTACT BETWEEN THE

INSULATION AND THE FUEL PIPING
Inspect the exhaust insulation to verify that it
does not contact the fuel piping (see Figure 3).

Figure 10: Insulation Contacting Fuel Piping

Interference of the insulation with the fuel piping

may wear a hole in the fuel piping, which could
spray fuel and cause a fire and engine damage.
If the insulation does contact the fuel piping,
reposition the exhaust insulation to provide a
minimum of 1/4 in. (6 mm) clearance between
the insulation and the fuel piping.
If the insulation was contacting the fuel piping,
inspect the fuel piping for damage. If damage
has occurred, replace the fuel piping before
returning the engine to service.
