Genetic engineering should be allowed for things such as plants and food, as genetic

modification can be used for discovering cures, vaccines, or other medical breakthroughs. For

example, according to the National Library of Medicine, “The simplest application of the

modern genetic manipulation methods to vaccine development is the expression in microbial

cells of genes from pathogens that encode surface antigens capable of inducing neutralizing

antibodies in the host of the pathogen involved. This procedure has been exploited successfully

for development of a vaccine against hepatitis B virus (HBV) that is now widely used” (Murray).

This proves that genetic modification can be applied in order to find cures and vaccines in the

future, especially if the vaccine for hepatitis B was found in the same way. The mild form of

genetic modification which was shown in the example, can be shown to have a big effect and

also prove to have many benefits. Since genetic modification is not completely trusted or

developed, this type of genetic engineering should be permitted, due to the medical and scientific

breakthroughs it could provide to mankind. However many experiments of genetic engineering

have also been shown to lead to complications. Therefore, steering away from contrasting

beliefs, genetic engineering should be permitted and also limited.

Genetic engineering should be limited in the form of genetically modifying humans, as its

results can be extremely unpredictable. Even though there are not many cases of humans being

genetically modified, there are experiments on animals, and embryos. One article states how

“Typically less than 10 percent of cloned animals survive till birth”(Howard 2016). These are

only experiments on animals, as genetic engineering on humans has not really been tested.

However, experiments on cloning, a form of genetic modification on embryos have also proven

to be unpredictable, ehow genetic engineering on humans would be unpredictable, and result in

complications. Another article states, “Choosing your child's green eyes might give them sickle
cell anemia, or some other form of genetic disease. It's impossible to be able to fully predict the

medical ramifications of genetic modification” (). This is another example of how unpredictable

genetic modification on humans can be. Many pieces of evidence prove that the genetic

engineering of humans should not be permitted because there are not any promising results,
