ASPIRIN (Acetylsalicylic acid) DESENSITIZATION

(For patients with true allergy, not NSAID intolerance)

325 mg Alka-Seltzer tablets. This form dissolves immediately in

water. A new solution must be made for each dose because aspirin quickly
hydrolyses to acetate and salicylic acid in aqueous media.

One tablet in 100 mL water is ~3 mg/mL. Dissolve one tablet in 100 mL of

water for each dose. The first three doses use a 1:10 dilution of the
concentrated solution (e.g. one mL of 3 mg/mL + 9 mL of water).

Give one dose P.O. every 15 minutes. For small volumes, add sufficient
water to make it easy for the patient to swallow the dose.

Then continue with aspirin therapy as desired, but one dose a day
is needed to sustain desensitization.
