STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT

UNIT-I
1. Determine the slenderness ratio for a steel column of solid circular section of diameter 150 mm and
3.5 m length.
2. A column of timber section 150 mm X 200 mm is 6-m long, both ends being fixed. Find the safe
load for the column. Use Euler’s formula and allow a factor of safety of 3. Take E = 17500 N-mm2.
3. A short hollow pier 1.6 m × 1.6 m outer sides and 1 m × 1 m inner sides supports a vertical load of
3,000 kN at a point located on a diagonal 0.5 m from vertical axis of the pier as shown in fig.
Neglecting self-weight of the pier, calculate the normal stress at four outside corners on a
horizontal section of the pier.

4. An Indian Standard Medium Beams (ISMB) 250 Rolled Steel Joist (RSJ) of length 5 m is used as
column. The column is fixed at one end and the other end is hinged. If σc = 32000 N/cm2, α =
1/7500, A = 50 cm2, Ixx = 500 cm4, Iyy = 400 cm4, find the safe axial load by Rankine’s formula
allowing a factor of safety of 3.
UNIT-II
1. A simply supported beam AB is 6-m long. It carries a point load of 6000 N at the midpoint. If E =
2 X 107 N-cm2 and moment of inertia I = 10000 cm4, determine the slope at one of the supports and
deflection under the load.
2. A simply supported beam AB is 4-m long. It carries a point load of 10000 N at mid span. The left
part of the beam has moment of inertia of 2400 cm4 and 4800 cm4 over the right part as shown in
Figure . Find the slope at A, and deflection at midpoint if E = 2 X 106 N/cm2.

3. A simply supported beam AB of length L carries a point load W at midpoint C of the span. The
moment of inertia of left half of the beam is I and that of right part is 2I. If E is the Young’s
modulus, determine the slope at each support and deflection at the midpoint by conjugate beam
method.
UNIT-III
1. Find the vertical deflection of the truss as shown in fig. at the end C. cross sectional area in mm2 of
all the members are shown in fig. take E= 200kN/mm2.
2. Cross sectional areas of all horizontal and vertical members of the frame as shown in fig. are
2000mm2and for inclined members are 3000mm2 . determine the vertical deflection of the joint F.
Take young’s modulus = 200 kN/mm2

UNIT-IV

1. A simply supported continuous beam ABC rests on supports A, B, and C. The supports are assumed
to be in the same level. The beam is loaded with point load and uniformly distributed load as shown
in Figure . Using Clapeyron’s equation, determine moments over the beam and draw the B.M. and
S.F. diagrams.

2. A continuous simply supported beam ABCD of length 9 m with overhanging span CD is‘ shown
in Figure . The lengths of all the spans, and distributed end point loads with their locations are
shown in the same figure. Draw the resultant B.M. diagram of the beam only.

3. Evaluate the bending moments at the joints of the simply supported continuous beam ABC shown
in Figure by the moment distribution method. Draw the B.M. diagram also. E of the beam is
constant throughout.
