1. Introduction

The aim of the present document is to explain and record the design calculations carried
out for the design of “Truss for Cantilever VMS Gantry structure”.

Cantilever gantry is modeled as a moment frame of height at 1800 mm and it supports a


VMS in front. VMS is mounted to structure with the help of bolts. It is braced in back. A
walkway of 0.9 m is provided at the back to maintenance purpose. Steps of MS rod bent to
shape are provided for access during maintenance.

The structure is supported on columns which are then supported on RCC columns which
are supported on isolated footings. The design philosophy along with loads & load
combinations considered are explained below:

2. Design Philosophy

The analysis has been done using the structural analysis software STAAD Pro. A 3D model
of the structure has been prepared using the beam elements and a 3D FEM analysis has
been carried out for different types of loads and their combinations which are explained in
the later part of this report.

Design of steel elements like columns & truss members have been carried out by the
software STAAD Pro SS6 as according to IS 800:2007 (Limit State Design) which has been
explained in detail in the later part of this report.

3. Design Loads

3.1. Dead Loads (DL)

In general, the dead load includes the self-weight of structure, weight of roof sheeting, Insul
ation pipes etc.

A. The self-weight of the steel members of the truss structure is considered in the
Dead load case and applied as self weight command. 10 % extra is considered
for connections.
B. Weight of signage is considered 5KN (500 kg) applied in the form of nodal
Load (1.25KN at each node).

C. A load of 200 kg/m2 is considered for storage of UPS and batteries.


D. A dead load of 50 kg/m2 (0.5 KN/m2 )is provided for a 4 mm thk sheet for platform.

3.2. Live Loads (LL)

Live load on truss is taken as 1.5 KN/m2, for accessible roofs as per IS875: Part-2.

3.3. Temperature Load (TL)

Temperature load on Truss Structure has been taken in view of change in temperature of s
urrounding w.r.t. to effective temperature at which structure will be restrained. The tempe
rature loads has been calculated in accordance with IRC 06: 2016. The maximum & minimu
m temperature for metallic structures has been taken as max. Air shade temperature+15 d
eg. & minimum air shade temperature-10 deg. C. In view of this, considering mean tempera
ture of 37.5 deg. C. The change of temperature from mean has been considered as ±37.5 de
g. Celsius along the length of member and assumed 5 deg. Celsius from top to bottom due to
presence of sheeting.

3.4. Seismic Loads (EQ)

The seismic loads have been calculated, according to IS-1893 (Part -1), following the next c
onsiderations:

 Zone factor, 0.16 i.e. Zone III


 Importance factor 1.0
 Response Reduction Factor 3
 Damping ratio 0.05

The seismic response of the structure has been calculated using the STAAD Pro software,
considering as mass source the dead loads of the structure, sheeting etc. Seismic weight is
applied as self-weight & additional load is applied as member load (weight if sheeting + 25
% of live load as per IS: 1893 Part 1

The nomenclature and description of the specific load patterns used in the calculation mod
el is defined in STAAD Pro.

3.5. Wind Loads (WL)

The wind loads have been calculated based on the parameters established for the standard
site conditions. For wind loads design code IS-875 (Part – 3) has been followed. The followi
ng parameters have been considered for wind load calculation:

 Basic Design Wind Speed of 50 m/s has been considered as per contract agreement.
 Terrain Category: 1
 Probability factor K1=1
 Terrain factor K2=1
 Topographical factor K3=1
 Cyclonic region co efficient K4 = 1
 Wind directionality factor Kd=0.9
 Area Averaging Factor Ka=1

From the above parameters the design wind speed comes out to be 47 m/s and wind
pressure comes out to be 1.5 KN/m2. Using area averaging factor Ka=1 and wind
directionality factor Kd=0.9 design wind pressure becomes 1.35KN/m2.
Force co efficient for VMS is 1.2 as per Table 26 of IS 875 part – 3 : 2015.
Force co efficient for truss member and columns is considered from Table 31 of IS 875 part
– 3 : 2015. For DVd > 6 it is 0.7 (i.e. for column for solidity ratio 0.1).
Wind force on VMS screen = 1.5X0.9X1.2=1.62 KN/m2 applied as floor load in staad.
Wind force on column =1.5x0.7x0.4(column size considered) = 0.42 KN/m.
Wind load on structure member = 1.5x1.2x0.089 (size of member) = 0.16 KN/m.
Wind load on railing member = 1.5x1.2x0.04 (size of member) =0. 072KN/m.
Wind force on pedestal is not considered because it is not considerable for it because it is lo
wer than 1 m.

3.6. Description of the load cases considered in the staad model

A load case defines how loads are to be applied to the structure, and how the structural res
ponse is to be calculated. The nomenclature and description of the specific load cases used
in the calculation model is as follows:

3.7. Load Combinations

The program design in STAAD. Pro is based on a set of loading combination. The load combi
nations are made according to IS 800:2007and IS875: Part 5 for Limit State design conditio
ns. In total there are 41 load combinations formed for limit state as well as serviceability co
nditions each in accordance with table below:

3.8. Element material Properties

The material properties for the structural steel are as follows:

 Structural Steel (GI), modulus of stability, Es : 200000 MPa


 Steel Yield strength for pipe (GI) : 240 MPa
 Structural Steel (GI) Ultimate strength : 410 MPa

The material properties for the Grade Class 8.8 Bolts are as follows:

 Structural Steel, modulus of stability, Es : 200000 MPa


 Structural Steel Ultimate strength : 800 MPa

4. Structural Model

The structure has been modeled in 3-dimensions for structural analysis, in which
mathematical model for the real structure is modeled. The same is presented below.
