Chapter one

1.1. INTRODUCTION

The proposed system uses an ultrasonic module interfaced to AVR family

microcontroller to detect missile object. An ultrasonic transducer comprising of
a transmitter and receiver are used on same module. The ultrasonic transducer
produces sound waves. The total time taken from sending the waves to
receiving it is calculated by taking into consideration the velocity of sound.
Then the distance is measured and displayed on a liquid crystal display
interfaced to the microcontroller. When the Microcontroller receives the signal
from ultrasonic receiver, it activates the door gun by triggering the gate of
MOSFET through a transistor or relay. The sensor is fitted on antenna and is
rotated and controlled by stepper motor through 360 degrees. If there is any
target within the detection range, the application will turn the launcher to the
nearest detected target and fires. The antenna is rotated and controlled by
stepper motor by one axis and also with another axis it rotates up and down
directions towards missile object simultaneously. The programs for 8051 family
microcontroller are written by the embedded C programming using Kiel
software. Target acquisition and tracking are frequent domains of active sensing
methods such as RADAR, Ultra-sound, or LASER scanning. The ability to
track targets at manipulation range can significantly reduce the cost and
complexity of manipulator control. Ultrasonic sensors, in particular, provide an
ideal platform for experimental development in range detection. They are
Cheap, readily available, and increasingly possessed of high-resolution sensors.
Its various Applications range from robotic security systems to environments
such as production lines.

1.2. Background

What is a missile?

A flying weapon that has its own engine so that it is travel a long distance
before exploding at the place that it has been aimed at. A missile has four
systems components: targeting and or guidance, flight system, propulsion
system and warhead.

1
A ground Missile is a missile designed to be launched from the ground to
destroy aircraft or other missiles. It is one type of antiaircraft system; in modern
armed forces missiles have replaced most other forms of dedicated antiaircraft
weapons, with antiaircraft guns pushed into specialized roles.

1.3. Problem identification

The problems that are tackled using the concept of Missile detection and destroy
system are:

1. Monitoring the moving target.

2. Real time monitoring of target.
3. Works in any lighting conditions.
4. Automatic target attacking.

1.4. Objective

The Purpose of this paper is to study the design “Missile Detection and
Automatic Destroy” and its basic principles, the characteristic that effect on its
parameters and explain its types and its application. By using (MATLAB
Program or embedded systems ultrasonic sensors) apply in our organization
Ethiopian Airforce.

The main objective

2
 Monitoring the moving target.
 Detects the path, shape, type speed of the moving target.
 Distinguishes between missile and any other object like Bird.
 Sends location to microcontroller.
 The microcontroller then send signals to antimissile which finally destroy it

2.1. literature review

Project description:

 Microcontrollers: It uses low power and gives high-performance.

 Ultrasonic Transducer: The ultrasonic sensors are a combination of
transmitter and receiver which works like radar or sonar. These sensors
send high-frequency waves that form an echo around the object and the
signals received by sensors.
 Stepper motor: It is a type of DC motor that moves in a step by step
manner.
 Humidity sensor: Used to sense the variation in humidity.
 DC gear motor: Used to convert electric energy to mechanical energy.
 Wireless Communication: It the set of specifications known as satellite
communication.
 Temperature sensor: Used to sense the temperature
 Landsat Software: This software provides the required sensing ability to
detect the missile and to distinguish it from another friendly object.
 Pressure sensor: Used to sense the pressure difference.

3. Methodology
3.1. The major part of missile detection and destroy system is detection of
object. For this purpose we are going to implement the ultrasonic sensor
based detection system.
3.2. This will give us exact distance of object from destroying unit. According
to the calculated distance robotic wheel will be operated.

3
3.3. Existing method
In the existing method we can detect the missiles and after detecting it
informs the control room that some missile is present some location and we
need to take certain action after detecting the missile.

3.4. Proposed methods

In the proposed method it overcomes the disadvantage of an existing

method. In this, we detect the missile by using ultrasonic sensor after
detecting the missile it automatically destroys the missile by emitting the
laser beam on the missile. In this, the sensors are connected to the
microcontroller which is used to monitor the at different directions by
rotating the stepper motors. The sensors are connected to the stepper motor
so by rotating the stepper motor all directions are the monitor.

3.5. Hardware and software

 Microcontrollers
 LCD Display
 Ultrasonic Sensor transmitter and
receiver.
 Stepper motor.
 Embedded c Keil software

4. Design

This project is to design and construct automatic missile detection and

destroying system. The system is designed to detect the target (missile) moving
in multiple directions. The destroying system moves automatically in the
direction of missile and fires it upon fixing the target. This system consists of a
SONAR based object tracking system that continuously monitors the target.
Upon detecting the target it sends the target's location to a Central Control
System. The Central Control System takes the action of moving the firing
mechanism in the direction of target missile. Upon fixing the direction, it sends
the control command to firing system to attack the target.

This project is divided in three part RF Transmitter, RF Receiver, and

microcontroller.

Unit cost /Br Total cost/Br
lcd 2500
Ultrasonic transmitter 1500
Ultrasonic receiver 1500
Integrated circuits 2000
Microcontroller 3000
Stepper motor 3500

5.2. Project Set up plan

 The system controllers used to detect missile objects.

 An ultrasonic transducer with a transmitter and receiver is used. They

produce sound waves that transmit and when it reflects it falls on the
transducer itself.

 The total time required to send the waves and receive it calculated the
velocity of sound.

 Then the distance measured and displayed on the liquid crystal with the help
of the controller. The controller receives the signal and it with a relay using
triggers gun.

 The sensor fitted above the antenna with the stepper motor rotates 360
degrees.

 If there is any missile or object nearby the system, then it launches anti-
missile to the target object.

6.1. Conclusion

The Ultrasonic transceiver (Transmitter & Receiver) detects missile object and
displays the missile direction on LCD through Microcontroller. If there is any
target within the detection range, the application will turn ON the Laser gun to
the nearest detected target and fires. A buzzer alarms when any of the ultrasonic

sensor identifies the missile to alert the nearest people. The project “Missile
Detection and Destroying System” has been successfully designed and tested.
Integrating features of all the hardware components used have developed it.
Presence of every module has been reasoned out and placed carefully thus
contributing to the best working of the unit. Secondly, using highly advanced
IC’s and with the help of growing technology the project has been successfully
implemented.
