Objectives
Benefits of CAD / CAM / CIM
Flexible Manufacturing System
Classification of FMS…
Application of FMS
Challenges with FMS

2
Benefits of CAD
Makes the designers to concentrate more on creativity
Creating prototypes using digital manufacturing
Costumer modification in drawing are easier
Automation of routine design tasks to increase the productivity of designers
and engineers
Due to 3D visualization of the model there is increase the designer’s
conceptual capacity, and hence the quality of the design.
Preparation of assembly and subassembly drawing

3
Benefit of CAM
 The application of CAM in the production offers advantages to a company to develop capabilities by combining
traditional economies of scale with economies of scope resulting in the desired flexibility and efficiency

 Greater supervision of the production

 Fast response to changes in market demand

 Greater flexibility

 Product variety

 Small lot-sizes

 Distributed processing capability

 Reduced waste

4
Benefits of CIM
The main aim of CIM is to use the advanced information processing technology into
all areas of manufacturing industry

 More productive andefficient

 Increase productreliability
 Decrease the cost of production andmaintenance
 Reduces the number of hazardousjobs

5
Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS)
What is FMS ???
A flexible manufacturing system is a
automated machine cell, consisting of
a group of processing workstations,
interconnected with automated
material handling and storage
system.
The FMS is most suited for the mid-
variety, mid-volume production range

6
Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS)
External changes such as change in product design and production
system.
Optimizing the manufacturing cycle time
Reduced production costs
Overcoming internal changes like breakdowns etc.

FMS: Two Categories of Flexibility

1) Machine Flexibility
2) Routing Flexibility

7
Classification of FMS…
• Flexible manufacturing systems can be distinguished according
to
the number of machines in the system. The following are typical
categories:
 Single machinecell
 Flexible manufacturingcell
 Flexible manufacturingsystem

8
Basic components of FMS

 Workstations
 Automated Material Handling and Storage systems
 Computer Control System

9
Application of FMS
 Metal-cutting machining
 Metal forming
 Assembly
 Joining-welding (arc ,spot), gluing
 Surfacetreatment
 Inspection
 Testing

10
Advantages of FMS
To reduce set up and queue times
Improve efficiency
Reduce time for product completion
Utilize human workers better
Improve product routing
Produce a variety of Items under one roof
Improve product quality
Serve a variety of vendors simultaneously
Produce more product more quickly

11
Disadvantages of FMS
Challenges with FMS
Determining if FMS the best production system for your company
Possible expansion costs associated with implementing FMS
 Expensive and Substantial pre-planning activity
