FRANKLIN

M O D E RG
N I SO
T IT HN DI C
C A FUNCTIONAL

The font was designed in 1904 by Morris Fuller Benton for

the American Type Founders company. The typeface found
its influence in Akzidenz Grotesk types.
Grotesques are usually
geometric in design
with simple letter
forms and fairly even
stroke weights , they
are also often bolder
and  can be used as
display type.

This typeset was named in honor

of Benjamin Franklin, whom
Benton greatly admired for his
significant contributions to
American history and culture,
to printing in particular. Franklin
Gothic has been used in many
headlines in newspapers and
advertisements. To this day, it
continues to maintain a high
profile, appearing in a variety of
media from books to billboards.

Sturdy, stark, quite simple and staggering.

It’s rational sans serif. Originally featured

bold with geometric shapes and sharp

edges. Sans serif, low modulation, the x

height is large, taking up roughly 3/4 of the

height of a capital letter.
