Professional Critical Portfolio Reflection

The foundation of working in a team as an architect is derived from the ‘The

Architects Code: Standards of Professional Conduct and Practice’ whereby, the respect for

others, observing competence, maintaining a good reputation and the consideration of the

wider impacts of one’s work is considered (Architects Registration Board, 2). Here, the

harnessed knowledge include the need to respect the ideas of the team members, developing

trust, learning from the views of others, controlling personal emotions, and observing

patience as well as time management. The inter-personal relationship developed within a

team and the focus on the collective objectives allow for the attainment of focus,

commitment, and sharing of responsibilities which in turn allow successful completion of the

task at hand. The profound idea derived as far as working in a group is concerned is the fact

that efficiency is imminent in a team due to the pooling of skills and varying abilities as

opposed to the case in operating alone.

The initial notion held about working in a team is that operating as an individual was

more fulfilling due to the avoidance of arguments imminent in a group and that one can

concentrate more while undertaking projects alone. Regarding the aspect of being a team

learning the functional dynamics of a group which includes the responsibilities of being in a

team and the requisite skill sets are required.

Reliability is an integral trait and while talking more in a group might not be

observed, providing the needed help and contributing in discussions when urgent matters are

concerned is important in the team (Gostick et al. 44). Being reliable can be assessed

regarding how one is resourceful in addressing the dilemmas and completing the tasks of a

group. Here, the given trait is deemed as profound in ensuring that all members are

contributing in the group tasks and the facilitation of success in the attainment of the overall

goal.

While a team comprises of individuals with varying thinking perspectives and

personalities, there is a need to bring and share ideas that contribute towards the collective

goals. Operating in a team provides the understanding of the responsibility to speak and

develop a team atmosphere marked by collective task handling. It is apparent that working in

a group requires the acceptance of the fact that all members are equal, but ideas need to be

assessed to allow the adoption of superior thoughts.

Regarding instructions, it is evident that there is a preference to act as a follower as

opposed to being an instructor due to the fear of risks. Here, there is a need to develop

leadership skills and the ability to undertake calculated risks without the fear of failing the

team. Also, it has been learned that there is an utmost need for flexibility. An architect ought

to appreciate divergent opinions and appreciate the perspectives of others in solving existing

and projected problems.
