Instructions:

1. This is an individual assignment. No duplication of work will be tolerated. Any


plagiarism or collusion may result in ZERO mark awarded to all involved and
further disciplinary action.
2. The total marks for TMA 1 is 100 and contributes 10% towards the total Course
Score (CS).
3. TMA 1 contains two (2) questions. Answer all the questions in English.
4. Submit your TMA 1 to Turnitin to generate your Originality Report.
5. REMINDER: Turnitin submission is NOT the same as OAS submission. You
need to submit your TMA 1 both to Turnitin and OAS.
6. Attach (using “Insert object”) or zip the Turnitin Originality Report together
with your TMA 1 and submit that combined file through the Online
Assignment Submission (OAS) system.
7. The deadline for the submission of TMA 1 is 25 February 2011.
Question 1
As distance learners, you might not have the time to go to the library often to study or to look
for printed information to complete your assignments. The digital library, accessible from
your computer (with internet access), can help you search for the resources you need.

Discuss any three (3) advantages and any two (2) disadvantages of the digital library for
distance learners like yourself.

Refer to Thomas Dixon’s e-book entitled ‘How to Get a First: The Essential Guide to
Academic Success’ (available in the MyDigitalLibrary’s e-books Center listings under the
category of ‘Education’). Read Chapter 2 and answer the following questions.

(a) Explain what primary and secondary reference materials are.

(b) Give one example of primary reference material and one example of secondary
reference material in each of two (2) academic disciplines of your own choice.

(c) Name five (5) non-academic activities that exert demands on time that you would
otherwise spend in your studies.
(10 marks)

(d) Discuss the three key pieces of time management technology.

Question 1
As an ODL student in Wawasan Open University, you have to manage and be responsible for
your own learning. In order to be a successful distance learner you need to develop certain
qualities.

Discuss five (5) qualities that you will need to develop in order to be a successful open
distance learner. Illustrate your answer for each quality with an example from your own
personal experience.

assessment system. As responsible learners, we have to acknowledge all our sources of
information. The Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) has been adopted by WOU as the house
style to cite sources.

Read the article “FAQs and Guidelines on Citations” in the “ASSIGNMENT FILE, SELF-
TEST AND ONLINE QUIZZES” section in the WawasanLearn LMS for WUC131/05
Learning Skills for University Studies.

Select any three (3) online books and any two (2) journal articles available in the Wawasan
Open University Library. Use the author-date system of the CMS to create bibliographic
entries for the sources of information that you have selected.
