informal. In French, we communicate by using the pronoun Vous (you /
you all) formally and Tu (you) informally.

To say hello to someone:

Le matin: Bonjour – Good morning
Le soir: Bonsoir – Good evening
La nuit: Bonne nuit – Good night

We can also add:

Bonjour, Monsieur. – Good morning sir / mister.
Bonsoir, Madame. – Good evening madam.

But for saying hello to friends:

Salut, Pierre! – Hi Pierre!
Salut, Marie! – Hi Marie!

Prendre congé (for saying goodbye):

 Can you see the signs on some alphabets like âge, où, etc.? These are known as
accents. In French, we use accents and spelling marks which may appear on vowels.
They play an important role in pronunciation and meaning.
1. ( ) – L’accent aigue – The aigue accent points
to the right and upward. Appearing only
above the letter e, it changes the letter’s
pronunciation to ay.
For example,
école – school
étudiant – student

2. ( ) – L’accent grave – The grave accent points to the left

and upward. It can appear over any vowel, but it
alters the pronunciation only when over the letter
e as ehh.
For example,
mère – mother
père – father

3. (^) – L’accent circonflexe – The circonflexe looks like

a little pointed hat over vowels. It can appear
on any vowel. It indicates that there was the
letter ‘s’ after the vowel, in old French. It is
also used to distinguish between homographs,
e.g., mur (wall) and mûr (ripe).
For example,
hôtel – hotel
forêt – forest

4. (ç) – La cedille – The cedille is a little tail under the letter c: ç. It is used to give
the s sound.
For example,
