What is It

Agricultural Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment, more commonly referred to as PPE, is a
protective clothing, gear, or other garments designed for farm work. PPE refers to any
specialized equipment or clothing worn by farmers and ranchers for protection
against health and safety hazards. Farmers should wear PPE while doing any farm
job. Wearing of PPE will depend upon the activity in the farm. . Wearing of
appropriate PPE is required for any farm tasks.

Purpose of PPE

PPE are designed for user’s protection. PPE protects wearer's body
from injury, infection and any forms of hazards. The hazards addressed by protective
equipment include physical, electrical, heat, chemicals, biohazards and other related
safety problems. PPE is designed to protect many parts of the body; eyes, head, face,
hands, feet, ears, or torso. PPE does not prevent accidents, but it does prevent or
reduce injury and even fatalities when used.

Protective equipment may be worn for job-related occupational safety and

health purposes. It can reduce the number and severity of farm work-related injuries
and illnesses. It could not only help protect people but also improve productivity and
profits of the farm.

Farmers and ranchers can benefit from using the appropriate protective
equipment for themselves, family members, and workers when the job and its
potential hazards call for it. Protective equipment must be carefully selected. Test fit

5
the protective equipment to be sure of a proper and comfortable fit. If it isn’t
comfortable - it won’t be worn; if it isn’t worn - it won’t protect!

Agricultural Personal Protective Equipment

The following are the examples of Agricultural PPE and their uses:

PPE Uses
Eye and face protection -
provides protection during
exposure to hazards like flying
particles, metal or sparks, liquid
chemicals, caustic liquids, light
radiation etc.

Sun glasses or goggles

Hearing protection - provides
protection during exposure to
high pitch, loud noise levels and
severe sounds.

Ear muffs
Respiratory protection -
provides protection from
inhalation hazards such as
vapours, mists, particulates,
pesticides, and gases.

Respirator /face mask

Hand protection - provides
protection during exposure to
potential hazards such as sharp
objects, abrasive surfaces,
temperature extremes, and
chemical contact.

Hand gloves

6
Head protection - provides
protection to potential hazards
such as falling objects, striking
against low-hanging objects,
electrical hazards, or chemical
application.

Helmet / hat
Foot protection - provides
protection for situations with the
potential of injuries such as
falling or rolling objects,
chemical or liquid exposures,
piercing objects, and where feet
are exposed to electrical
hazards.

Boots
Clothing protection - provides
protection from potential
hazards such as entanglement,
skin cancer, bodily injury, and
pesticide contamination.

Over all coat

It is important to purchase quality PPE that meet safety standards and are
appropriate for farm activity. It is equally important to purchase products that fit
well and are as comfortable as possible.

Checking the Suitability of PPE

To make sure the right type of PPE is chosen, consider the different hazards in
the workplace and identify the PPE that will provide adequate protection against
them; this may be different for each job. Ask your supplier for advice on the types of
PPE available and their suitability for different tasks. In some cases, you may need
to get advice from specialists or from the PPE manufacturer.

Consider the following when assessing suitability Of the PPE:

• Does the PPE protect the wearer from the risks and take account of the
environmental conditions where the task is taking place? For example eye
protection designed to protect against agricultural pesticides may not offer
adequate protection when using an angle grinder to cut steel or stone.
• Does using PPE increase the overall level of risk or add new risks, e.g. by
making communication more difficult?
• Can it be adjusted to fit the wearer correctly?

7
• What are the needs of the job and the demands it places on the wearer? For
example, the length of time the PPE needs to be worn, the physical effort
required to do the job or the requirements for visibility and communication.
• If someone wears more than one item of PPE, are they compatible? For
example does using a respirator make it difficult to fit eye protection properly?

Selection and When Selecting PPE:

• choose good quality products which are CE marked in accordance with the
Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002 – suppliers can advise you;
• choose equipment that suits the wearer – consider the size, fit and weight; you
may need to consider the health of the wearer, e.g. if equipment is very heavy,
or wearers have pre-existing health issues, standard PPE may not be suitable;
• let users help choose it, they will be more likely to use it.

Using and distributing PPE:

• instruct and train people how to use it;

• tell them why it is needed, when to use it and what its limitations are;
• never allow exemptions for those jobs that ‘only take a few minutes’;
• if something changes on the job, check the PPE if still appropriate – speak
with your supplier, explaining the job to them;
• if in doubt, seek further advice from a specialist

What’s More

Do this activity with your best. Answer the questions or statements found under
the column for QUESTION. Write your answer on the space under the column for
ANSWER. Use your notebook as your answer sheet.

QUESTION ANSWER
1. What PPE can provide protection during exposure
to hazards like flying particles, metal or sparks,
liquid chemicals, caustic liquids, light radiation, and
etc.
2. You will be spraying chemicals to control pest,
you knew face mask is not appropriate. What
appropriate PPE is needed aside from it?
3. What PPE can provide protection to potential
hazards such as falling objects, striking against low-
hanging objects, electrical hazards, or chemical
application.
4. You will be working heavy works in the farm using
tractors and disc plow. From the PPE, select and
prepare appropriate PPE for your feet and body.

8
5. In selection of PPE, what consideration will you
take?
6. Suitability means _____________

7. Aside from suitability what other consideration

may be taken when selecting and preparing PPE for
a certain task?
8. If the wearer has health issue like he is thin or
skinny so heavy coat is not suitable for him, what
PPE could you suggest for him to wear?
9. Aside from the manufacturer where can we get
advice in terms of checking the suitability of the
PPE?
10. Aside from the purpose of the PPE, what should
we consider when checking the suitability of the
PPE?

What I Have Learned

Complete the information/knowledge and skills that you have learned from
this module. Supply the blanks with appropriate word/s or information. Use your
notebook for this activity.
When Selecting and checking PPE, I need to choose good quality products that
suits and fits to my physique. I will also consider the _____________ of the PPE aside
from its purpose. I will choose the equipment that suits me well because
comfortability affects the performance in the fields or farm. The _________, fit and
_____________; should be considered because of the health of the wearer, e.g. if
equipment is very heavy, or wearers have pre-existing health issues, standard PPE
may not be___________. So lighter equipment is the best for him.
When assessing __________________ of the PPE, I should see to it that PPE can
really protect myself from any harms and risks. For example eye protection designed
to protect my __________. However, if I will use sun glasses but my activity is about
agricultural pesticides so sun glasses are not appropriate, eye _________ is the
adequate PPE for such work. It is very important to know our task so that we can
also access and select the appropriate PPE for the requirement of the task.

____________ and __________ protection provide protection during exposure to

hazards like flying particles, metal or sparks, liquid chemicals, caustic liquids, light
radiation etc. While Hearing protection provide protection during exposure to high
pitch, loud noise levels and severe sounds. Moreover, Respiratory protection - provide
protection from inhalation hazards such as vapours, mists, particulates, pesticides,

9
and gases. For my hands I need hand protection – it will provide protection during
exposure to potential hazards such as sharp objects, abrasive surfaces, temperature
extremes, and ________________. For my head, I need head protection- It provides
protection to potential hazards such as falling objects, striking against low-hanging
objects, electrical hazards, or chemical application. Boots are foot protection -
provide protection for situations with the potential of injuries such as falling or rolling
objects, chemical or liquid exposures, piercing objects, and where feet are exposed
to electrical hazards. And clothing protection - provide protection from potential
hazards such as entanglement, skin cancer, bodily injury, and pesticide
contamination.
