μZ600 - 4. Applications

4.1 - Analog Input Signals HAZARDOUS SAFE AREA

AREA
4.1.1 - 2 wire, 4-20 mA transmitters
630+
a) The simplest solution for normal two wire analog 631+ 4.1.1a
transmitters is to use a dual channel barrier which
has a diode return channel, μZ630 or μZ631.
Both the power supply and the load, shown as
250 Ω, are referred to the barrier ground and
remember to calculate the voltage drop through
both channels when checking operating characteris-
tics of the loop.
E.g. using the μZ631+ when operating at 20 mA loop
current with a 250 R load, insertion loss in the sup-
ply line is:
(Rend-to-endmax x loop current) = (289 x 0.02) V = 5.78 V, +

loss in the return line = 1.8 V + voltage across the load = 5 V

= total 12.58 V
Thus, when operating with a power supply Vs of 24 V, under
worst case conditions, the voltage available to the transmit-
ter and field wiring is 11.4 V.

b) The voltage drop on the return channel can be 620R+

avoided by using the μZ620R, where a precision 4.1.1b
250 Ω resistor converts the 4-20 mA current into a
1-5 V signal before passing through the barrier.

4.1.2 - “Smart” 2 wire transmitters

Most smart transmitters communicate by superimposing an

ac signal on the 4-20 mA signal current.
Both solutions shown in 4.1 are applicable to smart trans-
mitters as well as conventional 2 wire transmitters.

μZ600 - 4. Applications

4.1.3 - Temperature - Thermocouples HAZARDOUS SAFE AREA

AREA
Thermocouples are “simple” apparatus that do not require
certification when used in hazardous areas. The μZ660ac is
a star connected ac barrier which allows common mode 4.1.3
voltages of up to 6 V and is generally suitable for use with
thermocouples. Remember to continue the use of compen-
sating cable from the barrier to the receiving instrument.

Note: Using zener barriers in this application requires ther-

mocouples that are insulated from ground.

4.1.4 - Temperature - RTD

a) Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) are regard-

ed as “simple” apparatus and are usually insulated 4.1.4a
from ground. For normal applications of 3 wire RTD
measurement with a grounded bridge configuration,
the two channel μZ670ac can be used with the third
RTD lead connected to the ground terminal.

b) When higher accuracy is required, or the bridge cir-

cuit is floating, a three channel configuration is used.
Here the effect of leakage current is reduced and an
670ac 4.1.4b
accuracy better than 0.1 °C can be achieved.

μZ600 - 4. Applications

4.2 - Digital Input Signals HAZARDOUS SAFE AREA

AREA
4.2.1 - Switches

The simplest way to achieve a reliable transfer of switch sta-

tus is to apply a dual channel barrier such as the μZ630.
This ensures that the relay load de-energises even if either Switch
4.2.1
of the switch wires becomes shorted to ground.
A single channel barrier solution will not protect against this 3 1 Vs +
circumstance. 50mA

Note that for an optimum transfer of power the relay coil

4 50mA 2
should be selected at half the supply voltage with a resist-
ance equal to the combined resistance of the two barrier
channels.
G G

4.2.2 - Fire and gas detectors 4.2.2

It is difficult to generalise in this area of application since

there is considerable variation between different suppliers
and types.
However, one possible solution for these sensors is the two
channel μZ667 for specific devices, but general purpose
μZ630 can also be considered for many standard sensors.

μZ600 - 4. Applications

4.3 Analog Output Signals HAZARDOUS SAFE AREA

AREA
4.3.1 - Control valves - I/P

a) For most control outputs, a single channel barrier

can be applied to protect the current flow from the 4.3.1a
controller source.
Suitable barriers would be the μZ681 or perhaps half
an μZ680.

b) When the controller output needs to “sink” current,

or the return channel is monitored for output feed-
630+ 4.3.1b
back, then a two channel barrier is applied.
631+
The μZ630 or μZ631 are the barriers to consider
here.

μZ600 - 4. Applications

4.4 Digital Output Signals HAZARDOUS SAFE AREA

AREA
4.4.1 - Solenoid Valves

a) There are really only two alternative configurations 4.4.1a

for operating a solenoid valve and the simplest uses
a single channel barrier such as the μZ681.
This is applicable when the power supply is ground-
ed on the safe side and the control switch is in the
power lead.

b) If the control switch is in the return or ground lead 4.4.1b

of the supply then a two channel barrier is required
and the μZ630 or μZ631 are suitable, depending
upon the certification of the solenoid valve.

681+ 4.4.2

4.4.2 - LEDs and alarms

The configurations shown for solenoid valves are also appli-

cable for driving LED indicators and audible alarm devices.
They are all essentially on/off devices and only the two
operating states need to be considered after the certifica-
tion has been checked. Remember that some LEDs may
require additional current limiting than that of the barrier.

μZ600 - 4. Applications

4.5 Other Special Signals HAZARDOUS SAFE AREA

AREA
4.5.1 - Strain-Gauge Bridges

For these signals much depends upon the number of 4.5.1

bridges being used in the measurement and the resistance
of each bridge as to the best way to provide an interface.
The solution shown uses multiple barriers for the supply,
measurement output and optional bridge voltage sensing.
The sense barrier is only required when a six wire configu-
ration is being applied.
The μZ690 (or μZ666 as in 4.5.2) powers the bridge and the
μZ610 is used for the other two functions.

The voltage available on the bridge is given by:

Vbridge = Vsupply X
( R bridge
2x Rend-to-endmax + Rbridge )
E.g. for V supply of 10 V (±5 V) and a single 350 Ω bridge,
Vbridge = 6.25 V.

666ac
4.5.2 - Strain-Gauge Bridges (5V supply) 4.5.2

The voltage available on the bridge is given by:

Vbridge = Vsupply X
( R bridge
2x Rend-to-endmax + Rbridge )
E.g. for V supply of 5 V (±2.5 V) and a
single 350 Ω bridge, Vbridge = 4.2 V.

4.5.3 - Vibration Sensors HAZARDOUS SAFE AREA

AREA
The μZ623- provides a good solution for interfacing vibra-
tion probes.
It has two negatively polarized channels and is expressly
designed for use with popular types of vibration probes and 4.5.3
sensors.

μZ600 - 4. Applications

4.5.6 - General purpose, ac sensors/dc systems HAZARDOUS SAFE AREA

AREA
a) There are several other types of specialist devices
which are used in process instrumentation including
logic systems, photo-cells and ac sensors such as
4.5.6a
vibration, magnetic and optical pick-ups, turbine
flow meters, microphones etc.
If the sensors are not classed as simple apparatus
then they must have suitable certification to be used
in hazardous locations.
General purpose barriers to consider for ac applica-
tions are the μZ640 and the μZ650 is a good choice
for dc systems working up to 18 V.

b) The general purpose barrier μZ641+ is a good 641+

choice for DC systems working up to 13 V. 4.5.6b

μZ600 - 6. Installation

Mounting
To mount Series μZ600 on 35 mm DIN rail, hook one side
of the mounting foot over the lip of the rail and press down
firmly on the barrier to snap the other side of the mount-
ing foot over the opposite rail lip, (see Fig. 1).
Note well that this rail forms the electrical earth/ground con-
nection and the rail MUST be insulated from surrounding
metalwork, chassis, cabinets etc.
The Rail Insulating Spacer, ISP10 (see Fig. 3), is available for
this purpose, but any other insulating spacers can be used,
if they can provide insulation having a rating in excess of
500 volts rms.
To remove a barrier from the mounting rail, insert the blade
of a screwdriver between the metallic part of the mounting
foot at the ground terminal on the hazardous side and lever
the spring catch open against the side of the barrier casing,
(see Fig. 2)
Each barrier has an integral tag holder for loop identifica- Fig. 1
tion with tag label supplied and an additional A4 sheet of
tag labels is available as optional TSHT600.

Wiring
The function and location of the terminals should first be
identified before making wiring connections with a maxi-
mum wire section of 2.5 mm2 (12 AWG).
The plastic enclosure for the hazardous area terminals 3 & 4
is coloured blue, while for the safe area terminals 1 & 2 is
coloured grey. Ensure that the correct polarity of barrier has
been selected for the application before connection.
The connection of the DIN rail to the Intrinsic Safety ground
system must be securely and properly implemented to meet
the requirements of the standards and the earth/ground
clamp terminal GCLP600 is available for this purpose.
It is recommended that two of these terminals are used for
each section of rail to enable sections to be connected
together and for resistance and continuity checks to be
more easily carried out. (see Fig. 3 page 18).
Cable screens can be connected to the ground terminals
on both sides of the barrier where clamp screws are provid-
ed which will accept wiring up to 4 mm2 (10 AWG).
Contact your nearest Pepperl+Fuchs representative if appli-
cation assistance is required.

Warning
The barriers must be installed and used in accordance
with the relevant codes of practice of the country where Fig. 2

they are applied. For Europe, guidelines may be obtained

unless further protected by another means of explosion
protection by inclusion in an approved enclosure which
conforms to the applicable safety standards.
