1. In the USA a music tape costs $ 13.65. Given that the exchange rate is $ 1.56=£ 1.00 , find the
equivalent cost of the music tape in pounds and pence.
2. On a particular day the official exchange rate in the United States was 1 dollar = £0.68.
(a) Calculate to the nearest dollar, how many dollars could be bought for £35.00.
Mehul and his family were in the United States and visited a theme park on this day. The
entrance fee was 125 dollars.
(b) Calculate the equivalent price in £.
3. The European Community common currency is called the euro. 1 euro = 61 pence. Nadia paid
£250 for a painting in London. Calculate the equivalent cost to the nearest euro.
4. The price of a barrel of oil in US $ on a particular day was $ 22.
The exchange rate on that day was £ 1=$ 1.58.
(a) Calculate the price, in £ to the nearest penny, of a barrel of oil on that day.
A petroleum company bought 250 000 barrels of oil on that day.
(b) Calculate the cost, in US $ , of the 250 000 barrels, giving your answer in standard form.
5. On an island, the cost of a 1.5 litre bottle of water is $ 4.00 . in England, the cost of this bottle of
water is 85 p. Given that £ 1.00=$ 1.43 calculate, to 3 significant figures, the percentage
increase in the cost of the bottle on the island compared with its cost in England.
6. Josie pays 98 pence per litre for petrol in England. When Josie travels to America, she pays
$ 1.20 per litre. Given that £ 1=$ 1.45, calculate, to the nearest p, how much cheaper a litre of
petrol is in America than in England.
7. Rashid buys a watch in Dubai for $ 45.00 . Given that £ 1=$ 1.86 , calculate the price of the
watch, in £ to the nearest penny.
8. When Shahnaz visited china, the exchange rate was £ 1=15 Chinese Yuan (CNY). In china,
Shahnaz bought 3 pictures at a cost of 70 CNY each and 5 ornaments at 80 CNY each. Calculate
the total cost, in £, of all these items. Give your answer to the nearest penny.
9. Robert goes on holiday to France. The exchange rate is £ 1=1.27 euros. He changes £1250 into
Euros. He spends 1200 Euros while in France. When he returns to England he changes the
remaining Euros back into £. The exchange rate is now £ 1=1.14 euros. Calculate how many £,
to 2 decimal places, he receives.
10. Mr.Travelswell is about to visit Germany and Sweden. He has £5000 to spend. He wants to
exchange 60% of this into Euros in Germany, and the rest into Krona in Sweden. When he
changes his £5000, 1 Euro = £0.75 and £1=12.63 Krona. Calculate how many Euros and how
many Krona he will receive.
