70 PRECINCT NEWSLETTER
Greetings from the 70th Precinct, January, 2011

We would like to wish the 70th Precinct Community a Happy New Years. New Years Eve
was a great success, there were no incidents.

The 70th Precinct would like to thank everyone for their help and support during the snow
storms. During our last snow storm (Blizzard), the 70th Precinct was fully staffed and was
available to assist the community. The 70th Precinct worked extremely hard in assisting the
community by playing the role of Ambulances, transporting people to hospitals and giving
CPR. They were car service drivers for people in need of care and for those who needed to get
those who required care. They were Traffic agents moving traffic along and at times they were
even Sanitation workers digging people out, but most of all they were still protecting the City
from violence.

SNOW SAFETY TIPS:

Always remember to always prepare for the snow by giving yourself enough time to arrive
to your destination; rushing and excessive speed can cause accidents. Park your car legally and
if you live on a “one-way” street, try to park on the left side of the street, Sanitation plows to
the right. If you decide to drive make sure you have a full tank of gas and a shovel in your car.
For further inquires, please contact the 70th Precinct at 718-851-5511.

PEDESTRIAN SAFTEY:
In an effort to ensure both pedestrian and motorist safety, the 70th Precinct would like to
remind motorist to remain alert and refrain from talking and texting on their cell phone while
driving.

BICYCLE INITIATIVE
Bicycle accidents and bicyclist injuries have seen a dramatic increase in the past
year. Please be advised that in an effort to reduce these types of accidents, the 70 Precinct will
be holding bicyclists more accountable for their actions, as they already do motorists, by
issuing traffic violations. Bicyclists must adhere to many of the same rules of the road as
motorists do. For example, stopping at red lights, obeying traffic devices, etc... In addition, to
reduce serious injuries to bicyclists, the 70 Precinct will have "zero tolerance" towards
bicyclists who utilize headphones while riding a bicycle, and do not utilize a bicycle lane
when it is available. It is the 70 Precinct's mission to keep the roadways safe for motorists,
pedestrians, and bicyclists. Thank you for your compliance.

***FYI*** Recent business from Transit District 34 reports that there has been an increase in
electronic devices being stolen from passengers on board the subway system. Be aware, as
train door are closing, property is being removed.

New Truck Delivery Windows To Help Alleviate Congestion on

Church Avenue
Starting Jan. 18, 2011, the Department of Transportation will be implementing new truck
delivery “windows” along Church Avenue from East 16th to East 21st streets. The new
parking regulations set aside 40 metered spaces for weekday truck deliveries from 7 a.m.
– noon, plus the North side of Church Ave. from E. 18th to E. 19th Street from 7 a.m. – 3
p.m.. This plan will ease congestion along the busy commercial corridor, improve
parking opportunities for all motorists and enhance deliveries for the many businesses in
the area.

Here are a few of the questions you may have answered:

Why the change? By consolidating freight deliveries to morning hours, the initiative
encourages deliveries to be made earlier in the day, reducing unwieldy traffic congestion
on the Avenue, and minimizing double parking and curb idling.

The affected parking spaces will be marked by new street signs and red stickers on the meters.

My business on Church Avenue gets deliveries from vans and other non-truck vehicles. Can
they make use of this program? The only vehicles that can use these spaces during the
designated hours are those with commercial license plates.

Will my delivery trucks have to feed the meter while parked in one of the spaces during the
designated hours? No.

I usually park my car on Church Avenue. Where can I park after Jan. 18?

There will still be afternoon parking along the Avenue, and parking at 90 meters on Church
Avenue and on side streets. In addition, there are several underutilized parking lots
nearby:
