Detailed Summary

Herman Wise interviewed by Santiago Salazar Jr.

The interview with Herman Wise by Santiago Salazar Jr. was about Mr. Wise’s experience

during the Korean War. Presently, Mr. Wise was a Mexican and has retired from the military

services and operates a used car dealership in Harlingen. Mr. Wise became a part of 224th

Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division when he was inducted in the army on 2nd November

1950. His brother Miguel was also in the army. His family was very worried and upset on Mr.

Wise’s decision to join the army. Mr. Wise wanted to visit Corpus Christi and hence wanted

to volunteer for the army initially as a cook. He was sent with a group of troops to Oakland,

where they had to stay in a Japanese boat for fifteen to seventeen days. The black soldiers

were not allowed to mix with the whites. For training they were deported to Mt. Fujiyama in

Japan. The training was extremely hard and Mr. Wise was trained to carry mortar. Every one

called him Mortar Man. He too made intimacy with few Japanese girls during the training.

Finally, they reached Korea to fight against North Korea. He never liked the Korean as they

were selfish. It was extreme cold at minus eighteen degree Celsius in Korea. During their stay

they were offered beans and ham to eat twice in a day. During the fight Mr. Wise was struck

with a splinter and was sent back to America. He also states the young generation not to join

army for fighting for other nations. It’s a political tactics to kill its own people and show the

power to the world. He also states that the war in Iraq is simply wastage of money. He states

that the American government should utilize this money for liberation of Cuba and support

other South American countries instead of wasting it on war for liberation of other countries.

It is a simple but sorrow interview of Mr. Wise which reflects on the government’s poor

decision towards its own people.


Luis Lucio Interviewed by Rodolfo Flores

Luis Lucio was a commander of veteran of foreign wars and was attending a karaoke party at

the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall. This is a gracious interview accomplished by Rodolfo

Flores to analyse the various difficulties faced by the soldiers during a foreign war. This

interview states how the US federal government forcefully deports them for the liberation of

a foreign country to establish capitalism and stop it from becoming a communist country. The

interview also reflects the federal government politics, tactics and espionages leads to the

killing of the innocent POW (Prisoners of Wars). Mr. Lucio was a soldier for 2 nd Battalion, 7th

Marine Regiment; 1st Division. He thought that he was shipped for training in Vietnam. But,

after landing Chu Lai he realized that it was a real war. It was President Robert McNamara

who ordered the war to fight against the North Vietnamese who wanted South Vietnam to

become a communist state. Hence, few South Vietnam people who always South Vietnam to

become a communist country were fighting for North Vietnam and were specialized in

guerrilla warfare. While fighting the war, Mr. Lucio had to carry the dead bodies of these

South Vietnamese and dump them in trucks and was later dumped in big graves. He also

talked about how China and Russia supplied artilleries and sophisticated weapons to Vietnam

so that it can become a communist country. Also, there were protests all over US over the

war against the US army. Jane Fonda was their leader. She was such a cruel American that

she handed over the notes of American pilots who were POW to the top ranked officer of

North Vietnam in Hanoi and later these three pilots were killed mercilessly. He also tells

about his post traumatic stress disorder due to fighting in the war for which he was not

benefitted at all. Mr. Lucio states how he had to stay in Vietnam for one year, one month and

seven days. Rather he was disgraced as losers by his own countrymen. Hence, Lucio

illustrates how a soldier is treated by the petty politicians, fighting to retain the glory of his

own country.
Naturalization Requirements

The naturalization requirement talks about the various guidelines and procedures to be

followed in order to win the American citizenship. The basic requirement which needs to be

there in the people to become a resident of America are sound moral character, a test of

American history and the government, knowledge of English language and the waiting time

before application for getting citizenship in America. Apart from that, the person has to be

atleast 18 years old. For people below 18 year there is rules mentioned by Immigration and

naturalization Services. To be lawfully permitted as a permanent resident of America, the

person has to submit I-551, a card which is called Alien registration receipt and the status

proof. Those people are eligible to apply are permitted as lawful residents, has been in US for

more than 5 years and not been in absence more than a year before applying for citizenship,

has been in US for atleast two and a half years or 30 months out of the previous 5 years and

also has been there for atleast three months in a state or district in US. The person should be

of sound moral character for atleast 5 years, three years if he/ she are married and one year if

he/ she are from the armed force of US. Person involved with crimes, illegal gambling and

regular drunkard, convicted for more than two years, practicing prostitution and polygamy,

unable to produce the above documents or has falsified in producing the documents.

Regarding language the person must know to speak, write and read English and should have

idea of American history and fundamentals principles of the federal government.
