FAMILY THERAPY

INTRODUCTION:-
Family therapy is the branch of psychiatry which
sees an individual’s Psychiatric symptoms as
inseparably related to the family in which he
lives. Thus the focus of treatment is not on the
individual, but the family.
 Family therapist use a wide variety of
theoretical philosophies and techniques to bring
about change in dysfunctional patterns of
behaviour and interaction, some therapists may
focus on the here and now.
GOALS:-
To reduce dysfunctional behaviour of individual family
members.
To resolve or reduce intra family relationships conflicts.
To improve family communication skills.
To strengthen the family ability to cope up with the
mejor life stressors and traumatic events.
INDICATIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS:-

Indications:-
Problems in the relationship within the family ( urge
existence of communication or generation gap).
Interdependence of Symptoms ( Wife’s depression
being contingent on the husband’s alcohol
consumption and vice versa.)
Failure of Individual therapy ( may be because
family tensions have not been handled.
Contraindications:-

Family in the process of breaking up.


Family members staying apart.
Unwillingness to accept the Family
Therapy.
No availability of the key Family
member.
Patient Selection Criteria:-

Families may be referred for treatment by


private doctor and agencies such as School
system, Welfare Board, Parrol officers and
Judges.
Some families are preferred from Emergency
Psychiatric services after a visit caused by A
Crisis in the family like Drug Overdose.
After discharge from hospital Families should
referred for monthly Counseling and Checkup
Types and Techniques Of Family
Therapy
1. Individual Family therapy:-
 In this all Family member has a different
therapist.
 The whole family may meet with the one or two
therapist occasionally to see how the family
member behave with each other and rule out
specific issues.
Conjoint (Single) Family Therapy:-

The nuclear family is seen, and the issues


and problems raised by family are ones
addressed by the therapist.
The way in which the family interact is
observed and the become focus of the
Therapy. The therapist helps the families
deal more effectively with problems as
they rise and are defined.
Couple Therapy:-
Therapist we’ll help to the couple
in finding difficulties, families
pattern, communication
techniques, resolving conflicts,
recognising and respecting each
other’s similarities and differences.
Multiple Family Group Therapy:-
In this four to five members meet
weekly to confront and deal with
problems they have in common.
Ability of communication, fear,
neglect, social skills.
Teach how to develop new
relationship.
Network Therapy:-

It conducted in people homes.


It include 40 to 60 person.
This gathering include Family, friends,
neighbours, professional group, or person.
Different views of every person and
problem solving methods are used in
Families.
Multiple Impact Therapy:-

Several therapists come to together with


the families in a community settings.
They live together and deal with issues for
each family member within the context of
the group.
Multiple therapy working together and as
a families.
Family Therapy Assessment:-
Boyer and Jeffery ( 1984) describe six elements on which
Families are assessed to be either functional or
dysfunctional. The six element of assessment include:
 Communication
 Self-concept reinforcement
 Family member expectations
 Handling differences
 Family interactional patterns
 Family climate
The Nurse And The Family:-
Contact between the family nurse.
Providing access to Family.
Recognition of the stress of the family.
Reference to factors related to the
environment, state, private Person.
Identifying family communication
patterns.
Identifying the need of family support.
Family support.
