When one thinks of survival, one is apt to make the
error of thinking in terms of "barest necessity". That is
not survival. For it has no margin for loss.
In life, the only real guarantee of survival is abundance.
A farmer who calculates to need twelve bushels of grain
for his food for a year and plants twelve bushels
has cut back his chances of survival very markedly.
The fact is, he will not survive, unless some neighbor has
been more prudent. For the grasshoppers will take part
of the wheat. And the drought will take some. And the
hail will take some. And the tax gatherer will take some.
And what will he do for seed wheat if he intends to use
all he plants for food?
No, the farmer who knows he has to eat twelve
bushels of wheat in the coming year had better plant a
hundred.
Then the grasshoppers and internal revenue people
can chew away as they will. The farmer will still be able
to harvest enough for his own food.
An individual survives or succumbs in ratio to his
ability to acquire and hold the wherewithal of survival.
The security of a good job, for instance, means some guar-
antee of survival -other threats to existence not becoming
too overpowering. The man who makes twenty thousand
a year can afford better clothing against the weather, a
sounder and better home, medical care for himself and
his family, good transportation and, what is important,
the respect of his fellows. All these things are survival.
As for ideals, as for honesty, as for one's love of one's
fellow man, one cannot find good survival for one or for
not survive well. The average criminal spends the majority
ofhis adult years caged like some wild beast and guarded
from escape by the guns of good marksmen. A man who
is known to be honest is awarded survival-good jobs,
good friends. And the man who has his ideals, no matter
how thoroughly the minions of the devil may wheedle
him to desert them, survives well only so long as he is
true to those ideals. Have you ever heard about a doctor
who, for the sake of gain, begins to secretly attend
criminals or peddle dope? That doctor does not survive
long after his ideals are laid aside.
In short, the most esoteric concepts fall within this
understanding of survival. One survives so long as he is
true to himself, his family, his friends, the laws of the
Universe. When he fails in any respect, his survival is cut
down.
The end of Survival, however, is no sharp thing.
Survival is not a matter of being alive this moment and
dead the next. Survival is actually a graduated scale.
THE GOALS OF PROCESSING
Processing is directly concerned with increasing the
ability of the individual to survive, with increasing his
sanity or ability to reason, his physical ability, and his
general enjoyment of life.
The higher a person can rise on this scale, the fighter
he is in terms of reason, in terms of survival, and in terms
of general well being. The higher he is, the happier.
The lower he is, the sadder.
Happiness is important. The ability to arrange life and
the environment so that living can be better enjoyed,
the ability to tolerate the foibles of one's fellow humans,
the ability to see the true factors in a situation and re-
solve problems of living with accuracy, the ability to
accept and execute responsibility, these things are
important. Life is not much worth living if it cannot be
enjoyed. The Clear enjoys living to a very full extent.
He can stand up to situations which before he was
cleared would have reduced him to a shambles. The
ability to live well and fully and to enjoy that living is
the gift of the Clear.
The Clear has the advantage of not retaining, hidden
from himself, pain and painful situations in his past
which, being restimulated by the environment, enturbu-
late his reason and sicken his body.
He is called a "Clear" because his basic personality,
his self-determinism, his education and experience have
been cleared of aberrative shadows.
The auditor might liken his job to removing the rocks
and shoals from the hidden depths of a turbulent river
and making of it a smooth-flowing and powerful stream.
The auditor is not changing the preclear by evaluation
and suggestions. He is simply making it easier for the
mind to do what basic personality naturally wants the
mind to do. This might be said to be the total end and
goal of processing.
IT IS TIME TO SUCCEED
A fact which has been forgotten in this time of war
and spiritual pestilence is that there have been times in
man's history and pre-history when he has succeeded.
It has not all been gloom and hopelessness, else we would
not be here today—even as poorly as we are. Men have
lived to conquer all other forms of life, from the
mastodon to the microbe. Men have lived to build walls
and roads and pyramids which have defied the elements
for thousands of years. Men have lived to write music
which has pleased the gods and lines which have made
the angels sigh and the devil weep. This is a time for man
to succeed again. Here is the word, the technology, the
goal. The job is cut out: and its name is Survive!

As a Class IV, you qualify to enroll on the

VI) at ASHO, where you will study the whole
evolution of the Grades from 1950 forward.
Demanding Briefing Course practical training
produces a truly professional auditor. Students
audit daily, and receive any auditing needed to
complete Grade IV Release while on the course.
Grade V and VA are required for graduation.
The auditor now does an internship to earn
his permanent Class VI Certificate, and then

 SAINT HILL SPECIAL BRIEFING COURSE GRADUATE
LAUNCHES AUDITORS' GUILD
The professional Field Auditors Guild, begun by
SHSBC Graduate Lloyd Greenburg, is a group of pro-
fessional auditors in the Los Angeles area who have got-
ten together to share successful actions and get more
people into Scientology faster.
Designed to create a smooth flow between the field
and central Scientology Churches, the Professional Field
Auditors Guild plans to become International in scope
within the near future.
Members present at the Guild's last weekly meeting
were Class VI Tony Hitchman, Class VIII Val Weiss,
Class VIII Richard Kipperman, Class VIII' Trey Lotz,
Class VI Richard Moore, Class VI Hal Suiter, Class VI
Lulie Sanders, Class IV Joe Hochman, Class IVs Lynn
Levin, Chris Royce and Diana Lucarino (all 3 Saint
Hill Special Briefing Course students currently), Class IV
Nancy Diekmann, plus the Guild's director Class VI
Lloyd Greenberg and his wife Class IV Thea Greenberg.
The Guild has just acquired a very elegant house in
Pasadena with 5 acres of grounds, to serve as a central
meeting place where they can bring friends and new
people for the communication course now being given
there.

The story of the house itself is quite remarkable. At
first, when the mansion was up for lease in May, Lloyd
and Thea weren't quite ready to take it on, though the
house was exactly what they wanted and the owner
wanted to rent it to them. A group of sharp-looking
businessmen (complete with Rolls Royce) suddenly
appeared to take it immediately with "cash" in hand.
So they moved in—but soon turned out to be a pack of
swindlers! Not only did their rent check bounce but
they ordered $2500 in carpeting and painting which they
casually billed to the owner. By the time the owner got
rid of them, it was the last week in May, and after all the
paperwork was settled, the first available day for the
Greenbergs to move was June 1st—exactly the day they
had originally decided would be ideal! Almost melo-
dramatically, the leader of the swindlers was killed in a
plane crash shortly after the checks had bounced.
The Greenbergs were well-known photographers be-
fore getting into Scientology, with work published in
Argosy, True, Life, Time, Newsweek and other maga-
zines. Their exhibits were shown at the NY and Japan
World's Fairs. At the same time, Lloyd was on the
faculty of Sarah Lawrence College, touring and recording
with their chamber music group.

Lloyd, the first student at ASHO to start the chrono-
logical Saint Hill Special Briefing Course checksheet
released in 1972, first got interested in Scientology
through his brother, Marty. "He'd been going to psy-
chiatrists for 6 or 7 years and was unpredictable and
depressed half the time," Lloyd explains. "Then he
started becoming unusually cheerful. I was fairly apathet-
ic myself then so even that didn't get to me too much.
I was his older brother and had bullied him a lot, and
he'd never really asked me to do anything. But he said
he wanted me to take a look at this new thing he'd
found, and his intention was so strong that I did."
After some introductory lectures, Lloyd got some
auditing, and read Dianetics, Evolution of a Science by
L. Ron Hubbard. "That book really opened up all kinds
of new realizations," he recalls. "I stayed awake at night
going-'oh, if that's so t h e n - ! ! ' Pieces were just coming
together like mad. It was an incredible experience. After
that point I was a confirmed Scientologist. And after my
Grades, I knew I wanted to switch professions and be-
come an auditor myself."
He and Thea audited as Class IVs for quite a while at
both the New York Church of Scientology and in the

held in New York state.
Then after doing OT IV, Lloyd decided to get more
training. "I just didn't feel balanced," he confesses. "I
was never happy being just a technician at anything. I
always wanted to know WHY. And the Briefing Course
gave me that philosophical command of Scientology."
Regarding the Guild, he comments, "If I hadn't done
the Briefing Course, there would have been a lot more
fumbling with it. On the Briefing Course you see Ron's
plans, his purposes. I can see the scheme of things much
better than someone who hasn't done the Briefing
Course. We've also studied administration and ethics,
and it's simplified our operations considerably. In the
last few years especially, our postulates come true in a
much more direct line than ever before. (We almost
have to be careful what postulate we put out because
that's what happens!)"
Where would he have been today if he hadn't gotten
into Scientology? "I'd probably be in a hospital or
dead," Lloyd remarks candidly. "My asthma was so bad
before Scientology that I had already been hospitalized
a number of times. I'd arrived in the best-known
Chamber Music group in the country, which had been
my goal, but it had turned out to be a dead end for me
personally. I didn't have enough energy to start my own
group, and I was pretty much in the process of giving
up. It wouldn't have taken me long to accomplish that
too.

30, 1974, at the age of 70. The malady was
