The Research and
Development of Dianetics

Probably the genesis of Dianetics really lies in
the late 1920s when I was a young kid in the Orient
watching all sorts of oddities, such as little boys
jumping up to the top of ropes that were't there and
people worrying and wondering about what the soul
and mind were all about. The more they seemed to
know, the more impoverished they seemed to be.
I decided they didn't know very much about it
and I thought, "Well, the Western civilizations have
it all taped. America knows everything!"
So while I was going to George Washington Univer-
sity in 1931 I conducted a series of tests on poetry,
of all things. I found out that poetry gives off the
same wavelength in any language, and I wondered,
"What's this all about?"
I went over to the Psychology Department, and a
fellow there said, "Where are you from?" I said,
"I'm from the engineering school. I just want to
know some of the stuff you chaps have already got
figured out. Do all minds react the same to poetry?
Is there a repetitive wavelength that goes through
all minds and are all minds the same?"
And he said, "Poetry belongs in the arts college".
Then I got right down to cases, and I said, "Do
you know anything about this or don't you?"
And I made the horrifying discovery that nobody
had the mind taped. It was a totally wide open field.
There was philosophy, but it really had nothing to
do with the mind. There were a bunch of supposi-
tions back in the 1500's and 1600's. There was
something called "Faculty Psychology" having to do
with the examination of perception. And in 1870
a fellow by the name of Wundt had decided we were
all animals and established the modern school known
as psychology. But he didn't have any evidence!
And I wondered again, "What's this all about?
What is this thing called the mind?"
We all depend on this thing called the mind.
This is agreed upon throughout society. There is even
a saying that "Man's best weapon is his mind".
And yet, as we look over "Man's best weapon"
we find people totally certain about how everybody
else ought to use theirs, yet nobody knows how to
use his own!
Here we have this avowedly wonderful and impor-
tant thing, the human mind, and we go down to the
library and we look under the stack cards for Human
Mind. We find ''Libido Theory (not to be read by
Catholics)". We read over here, "PreFrontal Lobo-
tomies", but the number of fatalities is omitted from
the data. We look over here — "Why everybody has to
be electric shocked although nobody ever got well
from it." We have a book called The Human Mind.
We read it over and find it's a bunch of detailed case

histories of little girls who did something nasty. It
says on the cover The Human Mind. That's an insult.
The whole book talks about insanity.
Going forward, in 1938 I found the common
denominator of a]] livingness as Survival. I had
studied amongst very primitive cultures and I had
evidence that survival was the common denominator
to all these races.
All went along very well and we got into a war, the
war that ended nothing except some of our healths
and finances. The research and investigation in-
terrupted by the war was resumed immediately after
the war in the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital where I
studied endocrinology, endocrine systems and glands
and so forth.
We were getting people who had been starved,
pilots who had been shot down and been afloat for
weeks at sea and suffered tremendous and terrible
privations. And under tremendous stress men very
often lose their virility and, by the way, cannot eat or
break down food if they are too short on the vital
hormone, testosterone.
And they were trying to find out what made
people eat and what didn't make them eat so they
could put these pilots and others back into some
shape again.
We are indebted to that period of research just for
this reason only: I learned whether it was function or
structure that monitored human condition. That's an
interesting question if you come to think about it,
because it hasn't been asked for I don't know how
long.
Now most everybody said "It's structure: the
reason this man is unhappy is he has a pain in his leg
and it makes him unhappy." The prevailing opinion
was that Man's mental condition depends exclusive-
ly upon his physical condition, the balance of hor-
mones in his system, his glandular fluids, his diet,
his environment, and this determines his mental con-
dition. That was the philosophy of healing as of
1945.
Well, was it right? Much earlier in my life I'd had
the privilege of studying under someone taught by
Sigmund Freud himself. And Freud had the idea that
maybe the mind had something to do with it, but we
couldn't be too sure. There were no scientific proofs
certainly.
So I studied to resolve this question: is it struc-
ture that monitors the mind, or the mind that moni-
tors structure? And if we come up here with a
decision either way we will study that side of it.
Sitting around on benches in the park there at the
hospital, alongside some of these chaps who obvious-
ly were half starved to death, I started to work on

From its beginnings
to 1975
Probably no book in the history of Mankind has
made so much impact on so many people with as much
velocity as L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics: the Modern
Science of Mental Health.
In the years leading up to its release in 1950, L. Ron
Hubbard had become very well known in science fiction
circles while writing to support his researches into the
human mind. In 1949 word began to spread broadly
among forward-looking scientists that he was really onto
something.
By January of 1950, Hermitage House publishers,
specializing in psychiatric texts, approached the subject
with a skepticism that quickly turned to fascination
when they discovered the techniques were astonishingly
effective. They offered to print a book for the public
—but only if Hubbard could deliver an immediate manu-
script.
Ron's dream of a calm three-years-to-write-textbook
went glimmering. The editor got his manuscript—
180,000 words—just 3 weeks later. The book was pub-
lished and put on sale May 9 without fanfare.
Ron's feature article "Dianetics, the Evolution of a
Science" appeared in the May issue of Astounding
Science Fiction along with an ad announcing availabi-
lity of the new book on Dianetics from Hermitage
House.
Expected to sell at best 6000 copies-when that book
instantly began to sell a thousand copies a day the explo-
sion was on!
Its electrifying popularity startled the literary and
scientific world. Enthusiasm spread by word of mouth.
Dianetics leaped onto the New York Times Best Seller
list in June and just stayed there for 26 solid weeks.
Torrents of articles on "The Dianetics Question"
appeared in the press. Was it for real? Could such results
be possible? Dianetics became a household word as
millions talked about it, tried it, got their friends to try
it.
More than 25,000 letters, telegrams and phone calls
from all over the world poured into the publisher,
congratulating the brilliant author of Dianetics for his
contribution to Man.
By the scores, people wrote to Hubbard asking for
training as auditors. Ron announced he would give
instruction in his home in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
A deluge of students arrived June 2, the day the
school opened. Most letter applicants had been advised
by the Director of Admissions not to come because
there was no provision to handle very many! But they
came anyway, parking on the lawn, waiting for
attention. Soon people were being audited on every
available bed, chair, even the floor. Two more homes
were taken over, then a suite of offices.
In late July, the clamor of demand in Los Angeles
brought Ron to California to teach at the Hubbard
Dianetic Research Foundation's 110-room building on
Hoover Street.
The furore grew. At one point L.A. bookshops kept
available copies of the book under their shelves for
favored customers, as the publisher rushed new print-
ings to try to keep pace with demand. By fall, 150,000
copies had been sold!
The National Association of College stores reported
Dianetics as its number one non-fiction seller amongst
2,500,000 students in the months of June, July and
August.

More than 750 non-professional Dianetic
Clubs and groups had sprung up overnight with
people from all walks of life-engineers, doctors,
writers, housewives, lawyers, teachers, team-
sters-running Dianetics out of BOOK ONE.
With seemingly endless energy, Ron kept a
schedule that would have challenged a dozen
men, writing, lecturing, doing demonstrations,
answering mountains of correspondence, com-
muting between the East and West Coast of the
U.S.
Ron tried to find management adequate to
the task of training and auditing all the people
who had smashed a highway to his door, but
no management then in existence could have
withstood such a crush.
Undaunted, Ron carried on his research and
advanced Dianetic techniques to a point where
they would be invariably successful in hands
other than his own. In August of 1951, he pub-
lished the massive work Science of Survival,
The Prediction of Human Behavior, followed
in September by the popular self-help volume
Self-Analysis. His research into yet more basic
axioms culminated in Advanced Procedures and
Axioms, released in October, then in December
Handbook for Preclears, the self-processing
manual based on these principles.
By 1952, Ron was delving into the spiritual
nature of Man and its relationship to the mind
and body. History of Man told some of his find-
ings on engrams far beyond the scope of one
lifetime.
The release of Dianetics '55! at the 1955
Unification Congress in Phoenix marked the
technical bridge from Dianetics to Scientology,
the study of knowledge in its fullest sense.
And in 1958 Ron published the exper-
iences of 42 Scientologists in Have You Lived
Before This Life? A Study of Past Lives
through Dianetic Engrams.
On the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course in
England (begun in 1961) Ron gave auditors
new understanding of the time track itself in
lectures and bulletins of 1963.
By 1966, Scientology auditing techniques
had been developed to such a blinding speed of
result that auditors couldn't get enough prac-
tice handling the mind to get truly familiar with
it. So Ron re-introduced Dianetic auditing on
July 21, 1966, for training purposes only. Saint
Hill lead the way with all students and staff
taking part in the new Hubbard Dianetic Audi-
tor's Course. A resounding success, it quickly

them with what little Freudian analysis
I knew and as clumsily as I knew it. I
talked to them about this and that and
got them to change their minds about life
or about sex.
And on a series of these cases it work-
ed. Nothing done to them physically was
changing their minds, but we did some-
thing to them mentally and that changed
the body structure so they then ate, got
well and resumed the normal activities of
men.
But let's look at the other side of this.
By doing something to a man's leg, could
we put him into a higher intelligence
bracket? Could we make him more
successful in handling his boss? Could we
make it possible for him to ride a motor
cycle better? No. There isn't a single
thing that we could do to his leg that
would alter these characteristics.
And quite on the contrary, if a man is
bound and determined that that leg
won't heal, it won't heal!
This put us on a different vector than
Man had been on during these many last
millennia.
All of this and more, and an enormous
amount of work I did, finally culminated
in the writing of the book Dianetics: The
Modern Science of Mental Health.

In 1969, immediately after Class VIII Audi-
tors put in 100% standard tech across the
planet, a missing step for preclears came to
light — once again, Dianetics! So Ron stream-
lined existing Dianetic technology and rapidly
trained up specialists in the infinitely more
simple and fantastically more effective pro-
cedures. The first graduates went out to every
continent in May, 1969, to demonstrate and
implement them. Hubbard Standard Dianetics
Courses instantly filled up and "Dianetic
miracles" again became the order of the day.
In July of 1971, Ron spelled out the exact
Dianetic rundown to erase the causes of drug
and alcohol dependence, which had become so
prevalent in society.
Never satisfied to coast on past victories, the
new breakthroughs in Class XII results of late
'71 led Ron to find a way these gains could be
delivered by lower classed auditors. This mark-
ed the beginning of Expanded Dianetics, an
immensely powerful technology tailored to
handle the intentions and chronic difficulties of
the individual unreached by other processes.
Research continued through 1972 when
Expanded Dianetics Specialists were sent off to
deliver Ron's newest advance of Dianetics. Not
replacing Standard Dianetics, which continued
as the workhorse process to relieve human
suffering, Expanded Dianetics is done after
Grade IV Release.
Over the last few years Ron has continuous-
ly refined the use of Standard Dianetics to
make it even more effective. On March 13,
1975, he released the full and up-to-date text
on it, Dianetics Today. With this book, the
complete handbook of Dianetics as practiced in
1975 is as broadly available to the world as
Book One was in 1950.
In the 25 years since the wildfire of interest
and enthusiasm was kindled, Ron has built
vigorous organizations capable of unlimited
expansion to deliver Dianetics and Sciento-
logy to all who want it.
And what of the high hopes of 1950? Today
those hopes are being fulfilled, beyond the
wildest 1950 dreams!
In 1950, Ron wrote in Dianetics: "You are
beginning an adventure. Treat it as an adven-
ture. And may you never be the same again."
The promise of those words has come true
for millions. It will come true for you.
Nothing like Dianetics has happened
before. A body of knowledge has arisen,
has been codified, tested, which does
certain specific and spectacular things
— you might say, ends track on the
subject of psychotherapy.
When we see somebody who is unwell
and who is unhappy, we know that we
can do something about it because we
can communicate to the man and he
can communicate to the condition and
vanquish it.
Men have suspected this before. But
nobody had ever come up with an open
and shut proof of the matter. Just a
hammer-on-the-anvil proof. And that was
what launched us into Dianetics. A
proof, a continuous demonstration of
these conditions.
Man might have suspected it, but
Man didn't know it. And we know now
that we know it.
 Dianetics Widespread Use
in Society Today
What kind of people are using Dia-
netics? Here is a brief sampling!
DOCTORS
"One lady in her forties had suffered from
asthma for most of her life and paid regular
visits to her doctor to get her prescriptions. On
her last visit he expressed surprise at not
having seen her for several months and asked
her what had happened. She told him she had
had Dianetic Pastoral Counselling and that
her asthma no longer troubled her. There are
now several Doctors in her area who have
become interested in Dianetics.
Following Pastoral Counseling, which
can be given pre and post operatively, the
patients recover much faster and are far less
prone to complications. This factor alone
can be of enormous value to Medical Practi-
tioners in that time is taken up with typical
case complications and patients that are scared
of operations and hospitals.
Dianetics can help a person over a difficult
time when they have lost a close companion
such as a wife or husband. It is amazing to see
a person take up the reins of living again after

The Personal Experiences of 1950 Dianeticists
"I HAUNTED THE BOOK STORES WAITING FOR
THE BOOK TO COME OUT," recalls CARL JARDINE,
who was the Executive Officer of a Navy Destroyer in
Norfolk, Virginia when he read about Dianetics in
Astounding.
"We were in Philadelphia when it was released, and I
made sure every officer on the ship got a copy. The
Communications Officer on board got as interested as I
was and we co-audited just like it says in the book,"
he explains. He and his co-auditor went to Elizabeth for
professional auditing after a few weeks, and Carl took
the Hubbard Dianetic Auditor's Course. In the Navy for
another 3 years, he lectured and audited on Dianetics
wherever his orders carried him.
"I read the book at first because Carl asked me to,"
remembers LA VERNE JARDINE, who shortly after
became his wife. "As soon as I read it I was interested
too—there was hope that improvement could be made."
She recalls the first girl she ever audited was emo-

"We just ran incidents using Book One and she got
straightened out," LaVerne says. "Another girl kept
blowing up her pressure cooker and getting terrible
burns. We ran that out and she stopped doing it.
It worked!"
LaVerne was working for an advertising agency in
those days. "I used to just hand someone Book One
and say 'Please read this.' That was all you needed.
They'd want to find out more and would join our
Dianetic group."
The Jardines kept up with Ron's congresses as the
years went on, went to Saint Hill to go Clear in 1968
and later did the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course at
ASHO.
"Before Dianetics," Carl sums up, "I wasn't very

happy. I knew I wasn't doing what I really wanted to
do—I was a successful naval officer, well-liked, got
along fine, but I was a dilettante at living and I knew it.
Today I'm well, I'm healthy, I'm totally satisfied with
the knowingness of my own immortality I gained from
Ron's later advances with Scientology. If it cost a
million bucks and you only had a 20% chance of making
it, it would still be a bargain. It's not been an easy trip.
But it's been a ball! And it's always going to be an
adventure—that part will never change."

SAN DIEGO IN 1950 WHEN HER ENGINEER HUS-
BAND BROUGHT HOME A COPY OF DIANETICS.
"At first I thought it was just another of the many
things he was interested in, but finally I picked it up and
looked in it. I saw a lot of truth there and got quite
excited about it," she remembers. "There was really a
feeling of happiness and satisfaction at having found
what I had been looking for all my life. I just knew this
was it."
She and her husband started to co-audit from the
book. "We were very earnest and thorough about it—
we tried to do it exactly as Ron said." And it worked!
"For quite a few years I had very very violent claustro-
phobia. That just disappeared running engrains. Never
had a trace of it again, which was a great relief. My hus-
band got rid of his migraine headaches too."
A group of engineers ranging over the months from
half a dozen to 35, used to meet at their house to talk
about Dianetics and share successes.

Dianetics: Vital Role

In Today's Training
In 1950, Dianetics ushered in a new
era for Mankind. Follwing further re-
search by L. Ron Hubbard, the spec-
tacular results of Scientology processing
so far surpassed the results of Dianetics
that it was almost forgotten by many.
Today, L. Ron Hubbard has secured
Dianetics in its traditional place at the
very beginning of the Bridge to Clear for
each individual.
Every auditor starts out with Dianetic
training. Every preclear starts out with
Dianetic auditing.
The theory of the Hubbard Standard
Dianetics Course leads the student to a
thorough understanding of the anatomy
of the human mind. The practical section
gives him the direct experience of audi-
ting and handling the human mind.
With this firm grounding, the student
moves on to Scientology Academy train-
ing at his local Scientology Church. He
learns, on a step-by-step gradient, to
audit extremely well at each level, to IV,
when he classifies as a Hubbard Advanced
Auditor.
Now the student can profitably com-
plete his internship as an auditor up to
Class IV at his local Church, or can at
once commence the Saint Hill Special
Briefing Course at ASHO. There he gains
real expertise, judgement and profession-
alism as an auditor by learning the entire
subject from its earliest beginnings before
1948 up to the finalization of Clearing
procedures in 1966. When the student
completes this training he is a Class V,
Hubbard Validated Auditor.
The Senior Saint Hill Special Briefing
Course takes the auditor from 1967
through Ron's developments up to
1975. Upon completion of Level VI,
the auditor is a Hubbard Senior Scien-
tologist, with the use of Dianetics and
Scientology fully aligned.
He is now eligible for the Class VI
Internship at ASHO under the most
highly trained auditors and case super-
visors in the United States.
Today, further training in Expanded
Dianetics and on up to Class IX is avail-
able at ASHO. But the first basics of
auditing are learned with Dianetics, pre-
requisite to all other auditor training.
The training route is the cheapest
route to Clear since the student receives
all his auditing up to Grade IV from
fellow students.
Then with the excellent training of
Class VI behind him, he goes on to Grade
VI and Clear with great confidence.
The alternate route to Clear, the non-
professional or processing route, also
begins with Dianetic auditing by a quali-
fied auditor at a local organization. The
Hubbard Standard Dianetics Course is
highly recommended for those on this
route, as the understanding gained can
considerably speed progress to Clear.
After Grade VA, the individual on this
route takes the Solo Auditor's Course
(for which Dianetics, the Modern Science
of Mental Health is required read-
ing) where he learns much more about
the mind and how to audit himself the
rest of the way to Clear.
In all cases, tomorrow's Clears and
Class IX Auditors are doing their Dia-
netic training today!
