Placement of Planets

As Sun ALWAYS rises from the EAST and from the point number (c) of the first diagram we know -
“The point which is exactly ON the horizon on EAST at ANY location on Earth is ALWAYS the starting
point of the 1st house and is better known as the Ascendant or Lagna.” On this basis we can say at
the time of Sun rise (which is around 5 A.M. to 7 A.M. depending on the time of the year and location
of place) Sun is MOVING FROM the FIRST HOUSE into the TWELFTH HOUSE.

As Sun ALWAYS is Over-Head during Noon and from the point number (d) of the first diagram we
know – “The point which is exactly over-head at ANY location on Earth is ALWAYS the starting point of
the 10th house or the Medium Coeli or just MC.” On this basis we can say at the time of Sun being
Over-Head (which is around 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. depending on the time of the year and location of
place) Sun is MOVING FROM the TEHTH HOUSE into the NINTH HOUSE.

As Sun ALWAYS is in WEST during setting and from the point number (e) of the first diagram we
know – “The point which is exactly ON the horizon on WEST at ANY location on Earth is ALWAYS the
starting point of the 7th house or the Descendant.” On this basis we can say at the time of Sun being
setting (which is around 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. depending on the time of the year and location of place) Sun
is MOVING FROM the SEVENTH HOUSE into the SIXTH HOUSE.

As Sun ALWAYS is at bottom most position during Mid Night and from the point number (f) of the first
diagram we know – “The point which is exactly OPPOSITE to the over-head point or the 10th house or
MC is ALWAYS the starting point of the 4th house or the Imum Coeli or just IC.” On this basis we can
say at the time of Sun being at Bottom Most position (which is around 11 P.M. to 1 A.M. depending on
the time of the year and location of place) Sun is MOVING FROM the FOURTH HOUSE into the THIRD
HOUSE. Similarly, other house position of the Sun can also be predicted by knowing the time as
mentioned in this diagram.

House systems used are : Equal House, Whole House, Placidus, Koch, Porphyry, Campanus,
Regiomontanus, Solar, Lunar, Morinus, Radiant, Zariel, Alcabitus, Meridian, Topocentric, Horizontal
and Geodetic

Lagna Bhava or the first house commences from the point that just rises in the East and the whole
area that is yet to rise next below horizon and extends up to 2nd house cusp. The point exactly
opposite the East of 1st house cusp is the starting of 7th house. That part of sky which has risen just
before birth and extends upwards in the Eastern horizon is the 12th Bhava or house. The top most
point in the sky at any given location is the starting point of 10th house or the Midheaven and the
opposite point below the earth is called the Nadir or the 4th house.

Thus we can understand from the above statements that the time from approximately two hours
before sunrise till the exact time of sunrise, the Sun will be in the 1st house and the time
approximately two hours before sunset till the exact time of sunset, Sun will be in 7th house.
Similarly, from the time the Sun is exactly overhead at any given location and till approximately two
hours after that Sun will be in 10th house.

The 1st, 10th, 7th and 4th house are main pillars of a horoscope. They are called the Angular or
Cardinal or Kendra (meaning center in Vedic Astrology) Houses. The next houses to the angles or
Kendra viz. 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th are called the Fixed or Succedent or Panapara (meaning material
or money related in Vedic Astrology). The remaining four houses viz. 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th are called
the Cadent or Mutable or Apoklima (meaning to decline, lessen or expense).

Certain planets do not do well in certain house because their significations bring out
their worse qualities and these placements can get ignored sometimes but they have a
deep suffering quality and can bring out more karmic challenges than usual.  The
opposite case is that planets that have Dig Bala gain strength from certain houses.
While Vedic astrologers learn these rules, it is important to find a language to explain to
your clients so that they understand the lessons involved. Here is a quick guide for best
house placement and worse house placement. Note these house places in the natal
chart, moon chart or other divisional charts (vargas) will elicit results for those specific
charts.

Sun in the 10th is best.  Sun thrives in activity and in seeking status and being
recognized so Sun in the 10th house has the highest energy.  Sun in the 12th house is
the most challenging placement because the Sun is hidden and unnoticed and feels
abandoned, unsupported and secretive.  This may have been a result of an unavailable
father and leads to poor self-confidence, heart problems, health problems and
breathing problems.

Moon in the 4th is the best placement for the moon where happiness reigns, mother is
at home and in the heart.  Emotional support is full and one feel nurtured, affectionate
content and with expanding full feelings.    Moon in the 8th house is most challenging
as the emotions are stuck and repressed or dry or not experienced or stuck. This can
lead to shyness, distance from mother, sexual extremes, jealous, intense desire to be
loved and dangers from water accidents.

Mars does best in the 10th house where it is innovative, smart cheerful, quick to get
results, self-sufficient at work and where status and action and recognition occur.   Mars
is most difficultly placed in the 7th house where sexual conquest and ego and force
overtake duty and service.  This often leads to fights in relationship at work, selfish
partners, aggression and disputes and reproductive problems.

Saturn does best in the 7th house where it has Dig Bala and this is the natural 7th sign
of the zodiac, Libra, where diplomacy and skill at the workplace bring rewards.  It
produces practical business people who are loyal and dutiful in partnerships.    Saturn
has Marana Karaka Sthana (MKS) and is at its worse in the 1st house (connected to the
1st sign of the zodiac Aries) where fear in the head takes over grounded diplomacy.
This position creates selfishness, depression, isolation and slow physical development
and low self-esteem.

Jupiter has dig bala and does best in the 1st house where wisdom, joy and generosity
create great status and generosity and luck with children, wealthy and good coaches
and teachers. Jupiter does worse in the 3rd house where wisdom is lost in a kama play
of sexual pleasures and games. It leads to low energy and poor attention, boredom, lack
of resources and poor attention to detail.
Mercury does best in the 1st house where intellectual prowess and reason lead to
success and good cheer.  Mercury here is conscientious, principled, ethical, good at
speech and math and writing.  Mercury does worse in the 7th house or the 4th house. In
the 4th house the intellect destroys the emotional contentment of happiness and
prevents expression of feeling.  In the 7th house it becomes the immature child/prince
having love affairs with no thought to the ethical consequences.  It also makes one too
critical of partners and does not allow love to flow smoothly.

Venus does best in the 4th house of house of happiness, home and contentment where
it creates love of family, nurturing and love of elegant homes. It is placed the worst in
the 6th house (ie 6th sign like Virgo) where it creates conflicts with partners (partner as
enemy) and has a perverse love of fighting. Sixth house is the house of celibacy and
Venus is more at home in its sexual energy and this leads to problems.

Rahu does well in 10th house where it gains status at work but in the 9th house
is considered worse placed or Marana Karaka Sthana where it usurps father and Guru
and boss and traditional religion in rebellious innovation.  It is a schemer here holding
onto private bizarre philosophies rather than embracing the traditional.

Ketu does well in the 12th house where it has a natural placement for Moksha and may
bring a mystical element to sexual expression. Ketu dies in the 4th house where
happiness and contentment take it off the path and early unhappiness from mother may
lead to broken homes, problems with homes or vehicles or irregular heart beats.
Of course these rules are general and will be colored by sign, planetary aspects,
nakshatra placements and other associations.  A planet exalted or in its own sign in MKS
(Marana Karaka Stana) may have a better chance at overcoming a poor placement like
Sun in the 12th in Leo but still may lack poor judgment and not get through it as 12th
house placements are often life-long journeys.   If the owner of the house where the
planet is places is afflicted, suffering may be more intense such as Sun in the 12th and
aspected by Saturn and or Rahu may even create an almost deep curse.
The remedy for these poor placements of Marana Karaka Sthana is to workship the ruler
of Karaka of the house that is involved. So if Mars is in the 7th house, then one needs to
worship Venus, the karaka for the 7th house to overcome the relationship problems.
Dignity of Planets (Part Dos)
(III) Avasthas
These are of many kinds. The pertinent one to know early on in learning is ‘Baaladi’
Avastha.

In Odd signs – Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagi, and Aquarius – a planet as per degrees in
the sign is in the following avastha-
0-6 degrees (Infancy) Will give minimal results

6-12 degrees (Adolescence) Will give 1/2 its full potential effects

12-18 degrees (Mature) Will give full effects as per its potential

18-24 degrees (Old) Will give limited effects

24-30 degrees (Near Death) Will give minimal effects if any

For Even signs – Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn & Pisces

0-6 (Near Death)

6-12 (Old)

12-18 (Mature)

18-24 (Adolescent)

24-30 (Near Dead)

These are not to be taken too literally but liberally.

What it implies is that planets 12-18 degrees or more towards the center of a sign is
deeply colored as per the indications of that sign and hence will give those results
strongly. A planet more towards the corner of a sign (Rashi) will tend to blend into the
previous or next sign and hence not deeply colored as per that sign. Mathematically a
planet at 15 degrees is right at the center of the sign and hence most ‘colored’ with the
characteristics of that particular sign.

(IV) Residential Strength
Slightly more advanced of a concept but still easy enough to mention here.

When a horoscope is made, there is a Rising sign which is called the Ascendant or
‘Lagna’. This will be one of the 12 signs of course but the lagna as per the birth time will
have an exact degree in that sign from 0 to 30 somewhere. Note this degree. This
becomes the most effective point of each bhaav for all the signs.
Example Capricorn rises in ascendant at 20 degrees. Now Aquarius will be the 2nd
house. But the 20th degree of Aquarius will give the exact center of the 2nd bhaav which
is of money, wealth, family, speech, eating habits etc. (as you know from the earlier
articles)

When a planet in a sign is sitting exactly of 20 degrees for this example, it will have
100% residential strength and give strong effects of that Bhaav. Plus or Minus 5 degrees
from this of the range of 15 to 25 degrees, the planet still remains strong. Beyond that,
the strength in the bhaav goes down by each degree. When the planet is at 4 degrees in a
sign in the above case, it has actually gone into the previous Bhaav. So in the above
example say a planet is at 2 degrees in Aquarius. Now even though that sign is in the
2nd Rashi (sign) it is actually in the 1st Bhaav (which in this example will extend from 5
degrees in Capricorn to 5 degrees in Aquarius.

If this is a bit complex right now, just worry about the first paragraph and not too much
about the Bhaav movement concept called as ‘Chalit’ in astrology

This factor is VERY important when you look at a planet in any bhaav.

(V) Shadbala
Translated to English as the 6 fold strength. This is a comprehensive method of
Quantifying a planets strength in astrological units called as RUPAS. Rupas follow a
sexagesimal system with 1 Rupa = 60 VIRUPAS

The calculation has 6 main categories. Each category can have as much as 10 sub
categories implying the calculation actually looks at more than 50 different
characteristics in the underlying planet. The calculation is highly mathematical and
detailed but aims at Quantifying each planets Total Power or strength. After the
mathematical number is arrived at, there is a Cutoff for each planet. If the planet makes
the Cutoff, it is strong enough to give its promised results, if not then it is weak. Each
planet has a different cutoff. Example for Mercury it is 7 Rupas, for Moon it is 6 Rupas.
So if one has Mercury at 8 Rupas, they have a Mercury at 114% when 100% means
adequate strength.

The actual calculation and its logic is way beyond the scope of an online blog and this
early on in a student’s stage. None the less, this is a vital component which can
sometimes give counter-intuitive results as a debilitated planet can actually have a high
Shadbala and vice-versa.

JHora software and many others mathematically do these calculations for you. But
beware, there is errata in them. I am in touch with the author and longtime friend of
JHora software in fixing some of them. Still it will give you a good estimate.
One has to be again careful not to rely on this completely, especially before a detailed
understanding on the components and calculations behind Shadbala. It should be used
as one of the many shades of strength or weakness a planet possesses.

(VI) Nakshatra Placement
As we have 12 signs (30 degrees each) we have 27 Asterisms or Nakshatras (13 degrees
and 20 minutes each) or 13.33 degrees each. They are ruled by Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon,
Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn & Mercury (first 9) and then 10 to 18 again by the same
lords (in that given order) and 19 to 27 likewise again.

Hence each planet rules 3 Nakshatra each placed equidistant from each other.

The Nakshatra in which Moon is placed at birth is to be noted as the Birth Nakshatra.

Planets sitting in the 3rd, 5th and 7th Nakshatra from it will be weak and tend to give
negative results. Planets in the 2nd, 6th and 9th will give Positive and strong results
whereas planets in 1st, 4th and 8th will tend to give neutral to slightly positive results.

Example birth is Sun Nakshatra. So make Sun as Nakshatra 1

Moon is now Nakshatra 2, Mars is Nakshatra 3 etc. Those planets in the Nakshatra of
Mars, Jupiter and Mercury (because they will be the 3rd, 5th and 7th) Nakshatras will be
deemed weak or ineffective and will not give positive or strong results.

THE MAIN POINTS OF SYSTEMS’ APPROACH

Events and indications in life are ruled by the four elements of astrology: the planets,
houses, signs and planetary periods. During their operating periods, the planets bless
the person with the significations ruled by them relative to their strength and placement
in the horoscope. The main points are:

1. Identify the Most Effective Point of every house. The Most Effective Point is
based on the rising sign degree. For example, if the natal chart rising sign is 10 degrees,
15 minutes (of any sign from Aries to Pisces), then the Most Effective Point of every
house is 10 degrees, 15 minutes.

2. Note the five-degree orb. Whenever a planet is within five degrees of any other
planet, or is within five degrees on either side of the Most Effective Point of any house,
whether by conjunction or aspect, in either the natal chart or by transit, then the
planet’s benefic or malefic influence is considered close and applicable. Benefic and
malefic planets, however, can co-exist without problems (whether by conjunction or
aspect), when they are safely outside the five-degree orb from each other.
3. Determine the functional nature of planets. Planets operate as either
functional malefics or functional benefics in any given chart. The functional malefic
planets are Rahu and Ketu for all rising signs, along with planets ruling mooltrikona
signs falling in the dusthana (inauspicious) houses – which are the sixth, eighth, and
twelfth houses, as counted from the ascendant. Under Systems’ Approach, the
mooltrikona signs are 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 11 — Aries, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra,
Sagittarius, and Aquarius. These signs are ruled by Mars, Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus,
Jupiter and Saturn, respectively.

This is an important key to accurate readings. In the future, simply note whether any
mooltrikona sign (1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, or 11) falls in the malefic sixth, eighth, or twelfth house;
and, if so, the rulers of these houses become functional malefics for that rising sign
specifically. This explains why some people have good results with traditional malefic
planets, and poor results with traditional benefic planets. In other words, Sun, Mars,
and Saturn are not malefics for every chart; and, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Moon are
not benefics for every chart.

We listed the good and bad houses for all planets to transit from natal Moon in a previous
chapter. Even when a planet is transiting in a favorable house from natal Moon, it may be
“obstructed” by another planet transiting in the vedha sthana (house of obstruction). In that
case, the planet cannot give its good results. The vedha sthaanas of all good transits of all
planets are listed in Table 14.

Varga Grouping And Amsabala

We have several varga groups, i.e. groups of divisional charts.

If a planet is in its moolatrikona or an own rasi or its rasi of exaltation in a chart, it makes the
planet very strong in that chart. In each group of divisional charts, we can count the divisional
charts in which a planet occupies its moolatrikona or an own rasi or its rasi of exaltation. Based
on the count of such good divisional charts for the planet, we say that the planet is in a
particular amsa (the higher this number is, the stronger the planet is).
Shadvarga

“Shadvarga” literally means “six divisions”. Shadvarga is a group of the following divisional
charts: (1) Rasi chart, (2) D-2, (3) D-3, (4) D-9, (5) D-12, and, (6) D-30.

The amsa said to be occupied by a planet and the corresponding count of divisional charts – from
the above list – in which it occupies its moolatrikona, rasi of exaltation or an own rasi is listed
below:

Kimsukaamsa – 2, Vyanjanaamsa – 3, Chaamaraamsa – 4, Chatraamsa – 5, Kundalaamsa – 6.

Sapta varga

“Sapta varga” literally means “seven divisions”. Sapta varga is a group of the following divisional
charts: (1) Rasi chart, (2) D-2, (3) D-3, (4) D-7, (5) D-9, (6) D-12, and, (7) D-30.

The amsa said to be occupied by a planet and the corresponding count of divisional charts – from
the above list – in which it occupies its moolatrikona, rasi of exaltation or an own rasi is listed
below:

Kimsukaamsa – 2, Vyanjanaamsa – 3, Chaamaraamsa – 4, Chatraamsa – 5, Kundalaamsa – 6,

Mukutaamsa – 7.

Dasa varga

“Dasa varga” literally means “ten divisions”. Dasa varga is a group of the following divisional
charts: (1) Rasi chart, (2) D-2, (3) D-3, (4) D-7, (5) D-9, (6) D-10, (7) D-12, (8) D-16, (9) D-
30, and, (10) D-60.

The amsa said to be occupied by a planet and the corresponding count of divisional charts – from
the above list – in which it occupies its moolatrikona, rasi of exaltation or an own rasi is listed
below:

Paarijaataamsa – 2, Uttamaamsa – 3, Gopuraamsa– 4, Simhaasanaamsa – 5, Paaraavataamsa –

6, Devalokaamsa – 7, Brahmalokamsa – 8, Airaavataamsa – 9, Sreedhaamaamsa – 10.

NOTE: This group is very important and some yogas – special combinations – make use of these
amsas. For example, lagna lord or ghati lagna lord in Simhaasanaamsa would make one very
famous. A quadrant lord with good amsabala in dasavarga makes one very successful. Readers
should memorize the above amsas.

Shodasa varga

“Shodasa varga” literally means “sixteen divisions”. Shodasa varga is a group of the following
divisional charts: (1) Rasi chart, (2) D-2, (3) D-3, (4) D-4, (5) D-7, (6) D-9, (7) D-10, (8) D-12,
(9) D-16, (10) D-20, (11) D-24, (12) D-27, (13) D-30, (14) D-40, (15) D-45, and, (16) D-60.
The amsa said to be occupied by a planet and the corresponding count of divisional charts – from
the above list – in which it occupies its moolatrikona, rasi of exaltation or an own rasi is listed
below:

Bhedakaamsa – 2, Kusumaamsa – 3, Nagapurushaamsa – 4, Kandukaamsa – 5, Keralaamsa – 6,

Kalpavrikshaamsa – 7, Chandanavanaamsa – 8, Poornachandraamsa – 9, Uchchaisravaamsa –
10, Dhanvantaryamsa – 11, Sooryakaantaamsa – 12, Vidrumaamsa – 13, Indraasanaamsa – 14,
Golokaamsa – 15, Sree Vallabhaamsa – 16.

D45 & D60 - All things (D60 shows past life and its effects on current life)
We should remember which planets, rasis and houses show a particular matter and find links
between them in the divisional chart of interest.

Suppose we want to see when one would go abroad. It is related to residence and fortune and
we should analyze one’s chaturthamsa (D-4). The 9th and 12th houses show foreign residence.
Rahu signifies foreign residence. We should now look for links. If 12th lord is with Rahu in the
9th house in D-4, it can suggest that one would live abroad, probably during the periods of Rahu
or 12th lord or 9th house.

Suppose we want to see when one would get a promotion at the office. Because D-10 shows
one’s career and achievements, we should analyze D-10. Because GL (ghati lagna) shows power
and authority, planets or rasis giving a promotion are usually connected with GL. They are in GL
or aspect GL. Because AL shows status, planets associating with AL or the5th or the 10th from it
are favorable. If the lord of AL is in the 10th from it and aspects GL, probably his period will give
a promotion.

Marakas Killers
Each chart has some rasis and planets that are called marakas (killers). Since death is an event
relating to the physical existence, rasi chart is of utmost importance in seeing death. Rudramsa
(D-11) shows the forces of death and destruction and it can also give insight into death. D-30
shows one’s evils and punishment for the evils. Death can be a punishment for one’s evils and so
we should look at D-30 also. However, the most important chart is the rasi chart.

The 3rd and 8th houses are the houses of life. The 3rd house shows the vitality of one’s
existence and the 8th house shows the longevity. The 12th house from any house shows losses
related to the matters signified by that house. So the 12th house from these two houses shows
death. So the 2nd and 7th houses are the houses of death. For good longevity, the 3rd and 8th
houses and their lords should be strong and the 2nd and 7th houses and their lords should be
weak.

The rasis containing the 2nd and 7th houses are called maraka sthanas (killer stations). When
we use rasi-ruled dasas that can show death, dasas of these rasis can bring death. Lords of the
2nd and 7th houses are called maraka grahas (killer planets). When we use planet-ruled dasas
that can show death, dasas of these planets can bring death.

There are other maraka grahas too. If a malefic planet powerfully conjoins or aspects, using
graha drishti, the 2nd and 7th houses or their lords, then it qualifies as a maraka graha. Let us
look at an example. Suppose lagna is in Le, Saturn is in Sg and Mars is in Ge. Then Saturn is a
maraka on account of owning the 7th house (Aq). Mars is a malefic and he is in Ge. He aspects
the 2nd house (Vi, with the 4th house aspect) and the 7th lord (Saturn in Sg – with the 7th
house aspect). Because of these two factors, Mars is a maraka. Let us take another example.
Suppose lagna is in Pi, Mars is in Ge, Mercury is in Cp and Saturn is in Ar. On account of owning
the 2nd and 7th houses, Mars and Mercury are marakas. Look at Saturn. He is in the 2nd house
and aspects the 2nd lord Mars (with the 3rd house aspect) and the 7th lord Mercury (with the
10th house aspect). So Saturn is also a maraka and he may in fact be a stronger maraka than
Mars and Mercury.

When we time one’s death using a dasa, we should look for the involvement of maraka sthanas
and maraka grahas. We can also use marakas when timing death using the transits of planets.

Shadbala And Astakavarga Bala

There are six sources of strength – strength due to placement, strength due to time, strength
due to directions, strength due to aspects, strength due to motion and strength due to inherent
nature. Shadbala is a measure of the strength of a planet based on these six sources of strength.
Explaining the computation of shadbalas is beyond the scope of this book. For the details of its
computation, one may refer to “Brihat Parasara Hora Sastram” by Parasara or “Graha and Bhava
Balas” by Dr. B.V. Raman. Most computer software programs give shadbala, though there are
minor differences between the definitions used by them.

When two or planets influence the same house or when they participate in a yoga, then the
planet with the highest shadbala is the most likely give the results. The planet with the strongest
shadbala is like a group leader who acts on the group’s behalf.

On the other hand, ashtakavarga bala shows how other planets support or oppose a planet. It
does not show how capable the planet is of leading and giving the results of a group of planets,
unlike shadbala. It shows how capable a planet is of giving its own results, in harmony with other
planetary forces.

Definition of dream

In astrology Rahu is the ruler of dreams, when Rahu makes relation with Moon then dreams
comes in the time of sleeping. Some person start to see dreams in day time, some person start to
see dreams in the working time, dreams are must to think about realty of nature.

Example of Dreams

Moon in first house,Sun and fourth house,Mars in second house,Mercury in fifth house,Jupiter
and Venus in third house,Saturn in fourth house, and Rahu in sixth house and Ketu in 12th
house.

Moon always thinks,Sun always sees and Saturn always does,Mercury gives way of next by
voice,by expression and by communication,Mars gives strength and Jupiter and Venus gives
knowledge of paranormal and physical things,Rahu gives idea those not have any type
measurements and destinations,Ketu gives low label and Rahu gives high label.
Sun and Saturn in fourth house makes life only for showing image in evening and morning
time, the time of Rahu in first part of night and time of Ketu is the last part of night, middle part
of night always gives results of full Saturn.

In a month Moon makes connectivity with Rahu and Ketu, like 2.25 days when with Rahu or with
Ketu,2.25 days when in third house from Rahu or Ketu,2.25 days when in fifth house from Rahu
or Ketu,2.25 days when in seventh from Rahu and Ketu and 2.25 days when in ninth house from
Rahu and Ketu.

True dreams always when Moon makes gochara from birth time Rahu and Ketu, and lie dreams
always when Moon with Rahu by time Gochara.

Mars in second house gives nature to live by the helps of medicines,Sun and Saturn in fourth
house gives works related to home and illness of heart, it also gives weak heart,Saturn always
hits Moon of first from fourth house, fourth house is the house of Moon,Moon is a wet star and
Saturn is dry star, heart by the dryness makes feelings of nothing with life.

When Sun with Saturn Sun always gives illness of heart, like Sun is soul and Jupiter is Jeeva,
(breaths),Venus is the physical star, and this start gives helps to Jupiter to take breaths by the
physical ways,Before Jupiter is Mars like a doctor and after Mars is Jupiter, means breathing
depends on doctor, after breathing Sun means soul Saturn means works, and in fifth Mercury
gives connection by plastic tubes in stomach area, and Rahu in sixth gives nature of thinking
when Moon in sixth, gives dreams like a person is drinking blood,Mars and Rahu having
connection like trikonatmak, and when Moon in 8th house,Rahu gives dreams like a person saivng
him by death, and when Moon in 10th house, gives there are supports from family members and
some persons going to kill father.

Barren And Fruitful

 Barren: Mars, Saturn, Uranus.
 Fruitful: Sun, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Neptune. Moderately fruitful: Mercury.

Miscellaneous
When Mars in 2nd house, gives physical troubles,if Saturn in 2nd house gives dark in physical
things, and if Uranus in 2nd house gives troubles in the living like always expressing ideas.

 Benefic: Venus and Jupiter, particularly when not afflicted. Some authorities include the
Sun, Moon and Mercury, if favorably aspected.
 Malefic: The infortunes, Mars and Saturn, and by some modern authorities, Uranus and
Neptune, whether afflicted or otherwise. Mercury unfavorably aspected is deemed a
malefic with respect to money, law and marriage. Modern authorities consider no planet
can be truly termed a malefic, except insofar as its vibrations are improperly applied, and
is dependent largely upon its aspects for the nature of its operation.
Cold and hot.

 Cold: The Moon and Saturn; also, according to Sepharial, Mercury and Uranus.
 Hot: Sun, Mars. Warm: Venus, Jupiter, Neptune.

Diurnal( दै निक) and nocturnal (रात्रि कालीन).

The nocturnal planets are the Moon and Venus, because of their feminine qualities, their cool,
moist temperaments, and their passive natures as compared to the Sun and Mars. Also applied
to those which at birth were below the horizon, and thereby deemed to represent passive
qualities. In this case the diurnal planets are those which at birth were above the horizon, and
are thereby considered to represent the more active influences.

Dry and Moist.

 Dry: Sun, Mars, Saturn.

 Moist: Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus; also, according to Sepharial.
 Neptune. Mercury is both dry and moist.

Electric and Magnetic.

 Electric: Sun, Mars, Jupiter.

 Magnetic: Moon, Mercury, Saturn, Neptune. According to Sepharial both Sun and Moon
are magnetic.

Masculine and Feminine.

Masculine: Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. Feminine: Moon, Venus and Neptune. Also,
planets are said to take on masculine attributes in masculine signs; when in advance of the Sun;
or in the oriental quadrants; and feminine attributes in feminine signs; when following the Sun;
when on the opposite side of the horizon from the Sun; or when in the occidental पच्छिम
quadrants.

Morning and Evening.

Matitutinal and Nocturnal. This refers particularly to Mercury and Venus, as morning and evening
"stars," although all the planets become morning and evening stars at some part of the year,
though not all of them are visible to the naked eye. (v. Retrograde.) It must be observed that a
planet which is "behind" the Sun in its orbital motion, rises in diurnal motion "before" the Sun.
The counter-clockwise motion of the Earth's surface causes objects as uncovered on the Eastern
horizon to appear to move in a clockwise direction. Thus the planet which is behind the Sun in
orbit, rises in diurnal motion before the Sun.
Superior and Inferior.

The Major or Superior planets are those that have orbits larger than that of the Earth, and which
lie at a greater distance from the Sun. They are: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and
Pluto. Also called the Ponderous बडे or Ponderable planets. Their motion appears to us to be
slower, due to their greater distance from the Sun. Their effects are more enduring than those of
the Minor or Inferior planets. The Minor or Inferior planets are those that have orbits smaller
than that of the Earth, and which lie closer to the Sun. They are Mercury and Venus.

The order of the planets outward from the Sun is used in a recent work in psychology, in
illustration of a memory aid in the form of the sentence: "men very easily make jugs serve usual
needy purposes" - the first initial of each word corresponding to that of a planet: Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Also the word Vibgyor, for the
colors of the Solar spectrum, from the top downwards: Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow,
Orange, Red.

Planetary Ages of Human.

By the ancients the planets were caned chronocrators, or markers of time. It was presumed that
different periods of life are ruled by different planets, as:

Plane
Period Ages
t

Moon growth 4 years 1-4 the mewling babe

Mercury education 10 years 5-14 the scholar

Venus emotion 8 years 15-22 the lover

Sun
19 years 23-42 the citizen
virility

Mars 15
43-57 the soldier
ambition years

Jupiter reflection 12 years 58-69 the judge

Saturn
30 years 70-99 slippers
resignation
These appear to correspond to the Seven Ages of Man, as listed by Shakespeare in "As You Like
It," which he apparently took from the Chaldeans. Sepharial suggests a slightly altered set of
measures, to include the planets of recent discovery:

Plane
Duration of Years Age Period
t

Moon 7 0-7

Mercur
8 7-15
y

Venus 9 15-24

Sun 10 24-34

Mar
11 35-45
s

Jupite
12 46-57
r

Satur
13 57-70
n

Uranus 14 70-84

Neptune 15 84-99

Pluto 16 99-115

From the sign position and aspects to the chronocrators, judgment was formed as to the fortunes
of the native and his environment during the period ruled by each planet. Thus an afflicted Moon
indicates ill health and an adverse environment in infancy; an afflicted Mercury, retarded
education; an afflicted Mars, unfortunate in love; and so on.

Baadhakas
For a house falling in a movable/fixed/dual rasi, the 11th/9th/7th house (respectively) from
there becomes baadhaka sthaana (troubling spot). Its lord is called a “baadhaka” (troublemaker)
for the original house. The list of baadhaka sthaanas and baadhakas corresponding to each rasi
is given in Table 11.

For example, suppose lagna in someone’s D-10 is in Ge. Then Jupiter is baadhaka for lagna. The
periods of Jupiter and planets in Sg can create some obstructions and troubles in career. Let us
take another house. Aq is the 9th house and the 9th house in D-10 shows the guidance one gets
in one’s career. It can show manager and elders giving guidance. Baadhaka sthana for Aq is Li.
So the periods of Venus and occupants of Li can create some troubles related to the guidance
one gets. There may be some troubles related to manager. Thus we can consider baadhaka from
every house and arudha pada in every divisional chart.

Table 11: Baadhakas

Rasi Baadhaka sthaana Baadhaka

Le Ar Mars
Vi Pi Jupiter

Argala Intervention
In addition to the influence caused by planets with graha drishti and rasi drishti, there is another
influence called “argala”.

Argala is a very important concept in Vedic astrology. Literally speaking, argala means “a bolt”.
Argala on a house shows the influences that intervene in its affairs, decide some parts of it and
close the bolt on it, so to speak. Planet having rasi drishti have a small influence. Planets having
graha drishti have a more concrete influence. Planets with argala simply decide some parts of
the matter signified by the house. The influence caused by argala is decisive.

A planet or house in the 2nd, 4th and 11th houses from a planet or house causes primary argala
on the latter. Argala by a benefic planet is called a “subhaargala” (benefic intervention) and
argala by a malefic planet is called a “paapaargala” (malefic intervention). This simple concept
can be better appreciated if some examples are given.
The 4th house stands for education. The 2nd, 4th and 11th from the 4th house are 5th, 7th and
2nd houses respectively. One’s intelligence (5th), interaction with others (7th) and and overall
character and samskara (2nd) make or break one education. If Jupiter is in 5th house, he will
give intelligence and his subhargala (benefic intervention) on 4th will help one’s education. If
Rahu is in 5th house, his papargala (malefic intervention) on 4th will cause obstacles in one’s
education by way of poor intelligence. Similarly, benefics and malefics in the houses causing
argala cause good and bad intervention. Basically, the point is that intelligence, interaction and
samskara are the things that decide one’s education. They have a decisive role.

Let us take another example. Short journeys are seen from the 3rd house. What are the things
necessary for a journey? One needs a vehicle (4th). One may need someone to serve one by
driving the vehicle. Servants are seen from 6th. So, no wonder the 4th and 6th houses cause
argala on the 3rd house, being the 2nd and 4th from it respectively! If one has papargala on 3rd
from 4th, it may show trouble to the journey because of the vehicle. If one has papargala on 3rd
from 6th, it may show trouble to the journey because of the driver.

Let us take another example. Domestic harmony, comfort, well-being and happiness are seen
from the 4th house. What are the things that can make or break domestic harmony? Of course,
wife, children and other family members! Each of them can intervene in one’s domestic
harmony. No wonder the 5th, 7th and 2nd houses have an argala on the 4th house (being the
2nd, 4th and 11th respectively from the 4th house)! If a malefic in 5th has papargala on 4th, it
may show domestic clashes and lack of sukha (comfort/happiness) on account of a child. If a
benefic in 7th has subhargala on on 4th, it may show domestic happiness due to a caring
partner.

Apart from the 2nd, 4th and 11th houses from a house, the 5th house from a house has a
secondary argala on it. In the case of learning, argala of 8th house on 4th (8th is the 5th from
4th) shows the influence of hard work in learning. Hard work is another decider. In the case of
journey, argala of 7th house on 3rd house (7th is the 5th from 3rd) shows the influence of
partners in a journey.

Virodhargala Obstruction
Virodhargala shows the obstruction of argala. Planets and houses in the 12th, 10th, 3rd and 9th
houses from a house or planet cause virodhargala and obstruct the argala on it from the 2nd,
4th, 11th and 5th houses from it (respectively). For example, let us say Mercury, Jupiter, Venus
and Saturn are in Ge, Pi, Ar and Vi respectively. Saturn is in the 4th from Mercury and Ge and he
causes argala on them. With Saturn being a malefic, this is a paapaargala (malefic intervention).
But Jupiter is in the 10th from Mercury and Ge. So he obstructs Saturn’s argala and averts the
troubles. Venus is in the 11th from Mercury and Ge and so he causes argala on them. With
Venus being a benefic, it is a subhaargala (benefic intervention). If Le (3rd from Ge) is empty,
this argala is unobstructed.

NOTE: If a sign contains Ketu, argalas and virodhargalas on it are counted anti-zodiacally. For
example, let us say Ketu is in Vi. Then Le, Ge, Sc and Ta are the 2nd, 4th, 11th and 5th from Vi
(counted anti-zodiacally) and planets in those signs cause argala on Vi and on the planets in Vi.
Virodhargala is also counted similarly.

Under Standing Tantric Mantras

Vedic mantras are Tantric mantras, and are very complex.

Western scholars have hence failed to understand tantric ‘bija (seed) mantras’ used to invoke
deities and their origins – which lie within the Sanskrit alphabet itself.

Here are some examples of how such great mantras are formed, from Vedic sounds:

Au is Sadashiva - the great form of Shiva as Parameshvara or the Supreme Brahman (Supreme
Consciousness). It refers to sound and calling or invoking.

Da is Durga. It means a weapon, and refers to the Danda (staff).

Ga is Ganesha or Ganapati. It means a song, and hence implies sound, since Ganapati is lord of
the word (Brihaspati), which are Vedic mantras or hymns (he is Brahmanaspati and
Narashamsa).

Ha is Shiva. It means ‘to destroy’ and refers to the destructive power of Shiva in his terrible form
as Rudra or Bhairava, and hence as Fire (Agni), which has power to destroy.

I (ee) is Mahamaya, the great illusion form of the Goddess. It refers to emotions, such as pain
and anger, and thus represents the power of suffering in Maya. It also means the god of lust and
thus implies illusion due to lust and ego.

Ka is Kamadeva (God of Love) and Goddess Kali. It means air, time and sound.

La is Indra, the Vedic wielder of the Vajra (thunderbolt). It means ‘to cut’ and refers to the vajra
destroying or cutting heads of (i.e. removing ego or mind). It also stands for tejas (light and
heat – properties of lightening).

M. is the Universal Mother and represents sound (nada) – the primal sound of creation.

Ra is Brahma, the creator. It means to rule or govern.

U is Bhairava, the firey form of Shiva. It means ‘to protect’ and also the moon, which are forms
of Shiva. Bhairava is also the militant form of Shiva that destroys the demons and thus protects
us.

These are few examples, and thus we can see how the mantras work.

Hence, the mantra ‘Hum’ is therefore the ‘sound (m.) that destroys (ha) and protects (u)”. It is
hence the kavacha-mantra or armour mantra in Tantra.
Hlrim is the mantra of Goddess Bagalamukhi. It is hence the ‘sound (m.) that destroys (ha) and
cuts (la) the creative force (ra) which is illusion (i)’. It creates stillness and silence by destroying
the creator and illusion, leaving us to dwell on the inn-most self (beyond ego and illusion).

Likewise, Krim, the mantra of Goddess Kali is the ‘ruling (ra) sound (m.) of space and time (ka)
of the great illusion (i)’. It is thus the ruling mantra for subtle sound in the cosmos that breaks
illusion – which is the sound of thunder and power of lightening.

Bija mantras were known and used in Vedic times, as parts of the more esoteric sides of worship
and sadhana.

Chakra mantras, for example, are mentioned in the Upanishads, and many have failed to
correlate them with later ideas in the Tantras.

The Heart Chakra (also called Hridaya or Anahata) mantra, for example, is described in syllables
in Brihadaranyaka Up. (V.3), where "Yam" is the sacred syllable (of the heart) - later used in
Tantric Yoga to open this specific Chakra. Yam means "Control" and refers to the Inner-
Controller (of death or Prana, breath of life).

Interestingly also, "Ram" is mentioned (BU.V.12) by Yajnavalkya as the syllable for Prana,
relating to Food. Now, the Manipura Chakra has Ram (Rang, the bija-mantric form) as it's
mantra, and relates to the Digestive system, thus food. Manipura is also the City of Gemstones
chakra, relating to Delight or Bliss, which comes from Ram (pleasure, bliss).

Mantras such as “phat” (crack, break) that are used in astra-mantras in Tantra, are found in
Vedic texts as Shukla Yajurveda and elsewhere. This suggests they were used much earlier in
Rig Vedic times, as part of older brahmana and yajur (sacrificial) traditions.

Use Of Argala
Depending on the matter of interest, take the relevant house or the relevant karaka. Find argalas
and virodhargalas on it. If there are both, see if more planets cause argala or virodhargala. If
they are caused by the same number of planets, compare the strengths and decide whether
argala dominates or virodhargala. Based on the signs, houses and planets involved, guess the
meaning of the argala or virodhargala.

Argala from the 2nd house shows the basic ingredient for the sustenance of a matter. For
example, the 2nd house shows food and it is a basic ingredient for the sustenance of self (1st).
The 5th house shows intelligence and it is a basic ingredient for the sustenance of learning (4th).

Argala from the 4th house shows the basic factor that drives the mood, state and progress of a
matter. For example, the 4th house shows comfort and it drives the mood and state of self (1st).
The 7th house shows interaction and that drives one’s learning (4th).

Argala from the 11th house shows the catalyst that can result in gains for a matter. For example,
the 2nd house shows character, grooming and samskara and it is a catalyst in the process of
learning (4th).

Secondary argala from the 5th house shows the additional contributing factors. For example, the
5th house shows emotional situation and that contributes to the state of self (1st). The 8th
house shows hard work and that contributes to one’s learning (4th).

Using the above guidelines, we can understand the meaning of argalas on houses and karakas.
