03 ME 6022 Design of Heat Transfer Equipments

Assignment 1:

1. A double pipe heat exchanger is available to cool 0.40 kg/s of dilute aqueous solution from 70°C
to 50°C. Cooling water at the rate of 0.25 kg/s is at 25°C will be used to perform the heat duty. If
the overall heat transfer coefficient is 1500 W/m2-K and the inner tube outside diameter is 0.025
m, calculate the length of the tube required:
(a) for a countercurrent operation
(b) for cocurrent operation
Assume for the dilute aqueous solution use specific heat capacity as that of water.

2. 2.5kg/s of air at 105oC is cooled by passing though a single pass cross flow inter cooler with
water flowing through tubes at a rate of 2kg/s entering at 25 oC. The overall heat transfer
coefficient has been determined to be 150W/m 2k based on the outside tube surface area of
20.45m2. To what temperature is the air cooled? Use effectiveness –NTU method. Also find
outlet temperature of water.

3. 70000 kg/hr of kerosene is heated from 25oC to 50oC by cooling a gasoline stream from 70 to`50
oC. The inlet pressure will be 3.5 bar for each stream and the maximum pressure drop of 0.5 bar
for gasoline and 0.7 bar for kerosene are permissible. The fouling factor for gasoline is 0.0005
and for kerosene is 0.0001. Design a shell & tube heat exchanger.

4. Design a condenser for the following duty: 45, 000 kg/h of mixed light hydrocarbon vapours to
be condensed. The condenser to operate at 10 bar. The vapour will enter the condenser at 60°C
and the condensation will be complete at 45°C. The average molecular weight of the vapours is
52. The enthalpy of the vapours is 596.5 kJ/kg and the condensate 247 kJ/kg. Cooling water is
available at 30°C and the temperature rise is to be limited to 10°C. Plant standards require tubes
of 20 mm o.d., 16.6 mm i.d., 4.88 mm long, of admiralty brass. The vapours are to be totally
condensed and no sub-cooling is required.
