A Reflection Paper on The Bible: Real Talk

Theodore Roosevelt once said that a thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than
a college education. We all know that the Bible is the most powerful book because it contains
timeless principles that can change a nation for the better. National Bible Month is celebrated in
the country every January by Presidential Proclamation No. 124 declared by President Rodrigo
Duterte last January 5, 2017. This year’s National Bible Month theme is “The Bible: Real Talk”
and the reference verses for this theme are Psalm 19:7-8 and 2 Timothy 3:14-17. The center of
this year’s national Bible Month is on the youth due to the rapid increase of depression and
suicide rate. The goal is to empower them and to help them find their comfort in the promises
that God revealed in the Bible.
Psalm 19:7-8 tells us that we should obey the laws and commands of the Lord in order to
live a better life. Obeying the laws of the Lord strengthens us and gives us a happier life by
reviving our souls and rejoicing our hearts. We should also surrender ourselves to the commands
of the Lord because it provides us wisdom and understanding by making us a wiser person and
enlightening our eyes. Remember that we shouldn’t rely on our own understanding, but to the
understanding of the Lord. 2 Timothy 3:14-17 talks about that we have our own knowledge
about the Word of God since childhood which made us wise for salvation through faith in Christ
Jesus which we shall maintain and enhance as we grow up. The Word of God will make us
complete and equipped for every good work. As a youth, these two reference verses of 2019’s
National Bible Month are very important because these verses remind us that we should always
put God first in everything we do and obedience in the Lord will lead you to a more blessed life.
Jose Rizal said that the youth are the county’s hope that’s why it is good for the youth to study
the Bible and its principles for our nation to be better. But having knowledge about the Bible is
not enough, the more important is to apply of the Word of God in everything we do because
actions speak louder than words. We must practice what we preach. Knowledge is useless if you
can’t apply it in real life.
As a youth, I am thankful that we are the spotlight of this year’s National Bible Month. I
will do my best to heed and obey the teachings of the Lord. I accept the challenge of decreasing
depression and suicide rates among youth by spreading the Word of God and letting them know
the beauty of life. Teenagers like me suffers from depression due to school, family and friends
but that is not enough reason to commit suicide. We may have a bad day, but not a bad life. We
must strengthen our faith in God and help ourselves to move on from bad things from the past.
Tomorrow is another day and everyday is a gift from God.
