This document is an exam for an Electrical Machine Design course covering several topics:
1) It asks students to justify statements about induction motor and transformer design, including the benefits of semi-closed slots, stepped cores, and specific electric loading.
2) It presents a problem about calculating the maximum load of a motor given its heating and cooling time constants to stay under a temperature rise limit during intermittent operation.
3) It asks students to suggest design modifications for an induction motor to improve its power factor, overload capacity, starting torque, and efficiency.
4) It asks students to determine the core dimensions, number of turns, and conductor area for a single phase transformer given specifications like its power rating, voltages

Subject Coordinator Name: Dr. Priyanka Paliwal
Note: All Questions are compulsory
Q.No. Question Marks 1. 08 Justify the following statements: a) Carter’s coefficient of semi closed slots is higher in comparison with that of the open slots. b) Stepped cores are preferred in transformers in comparison with the square core c) If higher value of specific electric loading is chosen, the overload capacity of Induction motor reduces. d) Synchronous machines are designed with larger air gap as compared to induction machines. 2. A motor has a heating time constant of 70 minutes and a cooling time constant of 90 minutes when stationary. When run continuously on full load of 18.5 kW, 07 the final temperature rise is 40⁰C. i) What load motor could deliver for 10 minutes without exceeding the temperature rise of 40⁰C if this is followed by a shut-down period long enough for it to cool down? ii) If it is on intermittent loading with 10 minutes on load followed by 15 minutes of shut down, what is the maximum load the motor can supply during loading period without exceeding the temperature rise of 40⁰C? Assume losses to be proportional to square of load. 3. Suggest the modifications in design of a three phase induction motor for 08 improvement in:- i) Power factor ii)Over load capacity iii) Starting torque iv) Efficiency. 4. Determine the main dimensions of the core, the number of turns and the area of 07 conductors for a 5 kVA, 50 Hz, 11000/400 V, single phase, core type distribution transformer. The net conductor area in the window is 60% of the net cross-section of the iron core. Given: i) core is square shaped. ii) Bm=1 wb/m2 iii) current density= 1.4 A/mm2 iv) Window space factor Kw=0.2. The window height is 3 times its width.
