My Educational Career Journey

Being a teacher is the most practical choice of career for me according to my mother who is now a retired teacher. In
reality, when I graduated high school I was doubtful of my ability to make choices especially something that would
greatly affect the future. So, as I confided to my parents, as they will spend for my college tuition. Then I followed
their advise. This submissive daughter is Althea Alabanzas, who took Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education
Major in Special Education from the University of St. La Salle – Bacolod. As soon, as I graduated in 2011, I became a
private tutor for toddlers and Kindergarten students with disabilities. In the same year I passed the LET and
acknowledged my mother’s advice to pursue as Master’s Degree in Early childhood Education. After a year in Bacolod
City, I decided to transfer to my Hometown Canlaon City. I taught in Public School there for 3 years. It was a
challenging and memorable experience. I learned a lot and I had a tremendous growth. It was very competitive
environment, where you need to push yourself to balance curricular and extra – curricular activities. However, after
the death of my father it seems that my home town is limiting me so, my sister who is a Sped Teacher in US Virgin
Islands helped me get a job in there. This is my 5th year of being a Kindergarten Special Education teacher here in
America’s Paradise. So far, I have grown professionally and I believed I have broaden my understanding of children as
I immerse my self in a new culture. In some ways I have observed that children are alike in many ways and different in
a lot of ways. Aside from teaching children with Special needs, I also had the opportunity to teach ESL here. I am
looking forward to more challenges in teaching as it gives me thrill and excitement as every year is a brand new set of
learners. And as I embark to new teaching experience, I bring with me , my adopted philosophy of teaching from St.
La Salle the patron St. of Teachers, that is – “Teach Minds, Touch Hearts, Transform Lives” .

I. Think of a topic and allot 5 days to implement the topic. Discuss the activity that you will do for each day to attain your
ultimate objective at the end of the topic: Start from day 1 going to 3 until day 5. Make it in a table form for easy reading.

3. Do you see the difference in your two plans? Which is better? What is the
advantage of the 2nd to the first strategy that you used?

It is evident that both actually involves breaking down the objectives. However, the first strategy is teaching from bits
to bits to achieve the goal. In the other strategy the product is already achieved, before it is explained part by part. In
my opinion, I find strategy 1 easier since, it is like teaching simpler topics to a more challenging topic. Meaning, they
already understood the foundations and they will just generalize what they learned. On the other hand, the
advantage for 2nd strategy is that for teachers to see the bigger idea. From that teachers will just need to figure out
what part of the lesson they don’t know. It is like they already assessed the students abilities. From that teachers will
need to isolate a topic to work on with the students.

Reflection:
According to Early Childhood Education: A Guide to Early Childhood Education Development book, one of the earliest
curriculum for early childhood education was created by Dr. Maria Montessori. Her work is still been used today in
many pre- schools. The materials she created are specific and crafted with an end in mind. Her curriculum is
specialized and accommodates individual needs. Four themes have emerged from the history of early childhood
education that affected early childhood is now. They are the Ethic Reform, the importance of Early Childhood,
transmitting values, and sense professionalization. Early childhood was trying to improve children’s health and well –
being. Early childhood education includes social welfare and family support as many practioners have mentioned that
early childhood stage is a unique stage of life. Values is the essence of education in history as shown by the works of
early childhood educators and contributors.

Using themes has been popularized by John Dewy and proposed that curriculum should be related to real – life
experience. It suggests incorporating every branch of knowledge together under one subject. It however, requires
skillful planning. Aside from that it is necessary that teachers need to be creative. Teachers should also be equipped
with strategies and knowledge of the developmental areas and stages of children
