READING COMPREHENSION: ITS EFFECTS ON THE QUARTERLY
EXAMINATION PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENTS OF MAT-I NAAWAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
I. Situation
The Senior High School of Mat-i Naawan, Misamis Oriental has a
total of 56 enrollees comprising of 24 students from Grade 11 and 32
students from Grade 12. There are 34 boys and 22 girls in the total
population. Reading comprehension is the ability to process
text, understand its meaning, and to integrate with what the reader
already knows. It is also a key factor in learning of an individual. The
problem faced in school by a senior high school student who cannot
comprehend is serious. It can affect an aspect of a student education
and generally lead to failure in class.

II. Findings and Insights

The reason for a student not being able to comprehend are varied –
poor teaching, paucity of vocabulary, lack of motivation or the child
may have a learning disability which makes comprehending difficult.
We felt that motivating students to improve and increase their
vocabulary can enhance their comprehension that will help them
understand their readings. It can also improve their formative and
summative test result due to a better understanding of the topic.

III. Summary
The study was conducted to determine if the level of reading
comprehension of the students affects their quarterly examination
performance. Further purpose is to find reference for intervention to
alter in the next school year. The study limits on the Senior High
School Students (Grade 11 – Socrates and Grade 12 – Aristotle) of
Mat-I (Naawan) National High School (Mat-i, Naawan, Misamis
Oriental). Respondents of the questionnaires are all senior high school
students in order to compare the results. Survey questionnaires was
served to the respondents to be answered immediately. After serving
all the questionnaires, results were recorded in the table. The result of
the quarterly examination in every subjects was also collected. Factors
being considered are the different subjects, gender and the student’s
variation. It being observed that students with high level of
comprehension also have high scores in quarterly examinations in
most of the subject areas. Further research should be done to
determine the cause of low comprehension level of the students to
have an effective interventions on the learning of the students.
