SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT-

Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology, the word describes how biological
systems remain diverse and productive over time. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and
forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. For humans, sustainability is the
potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has environmental, economic,
and social dimensions.
“sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
There are two major ways of reducing negative human impact and enhancing
environment. The first is environment management ; this approach is based largely on
information gained from earth and environment sciences, and conservation biology. The
second approach is management of human consumption of resources, which is based
largely on information gained from economics.

A) GLOBAL SCENARIO

The Ecological footprint measures human consumption in terms of the biologically

productive land needed to provide the resources, and absorb the wastes of the average
global citizen. In 2008 it required 2.7 global hectares per person, 30% more than the
natural biological capacity of 2.1 global hectares (assuming no provision for other
organisms). The resulting ecological deficit must be met from unsustainable extra
sources and these are obtained in three ways: embedded in the goods and services of
world trade; taken from the past (e.g. fossil fuels); or borrowed from the future as
unsustainable resource usage (e.g. by over exploiting forests and fisheries).
The figure (right) compares the sustainability of countries by contrasting their
Ecological Footprint with their UN Human Development Index (a measure of standard
of living). The graph shows what is necessary for countries to maintain an acceptable
standard of living for their citizens while, at the same time, maintaining sustainable
resource use. The general trend is for higher standards of living to become less
sustainable. As always, population growth has a marked influence on levels of
consumption and the efficiency of resource use.

World Business Council for Sustainable Development-

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a CEO-led,

global association of some 200 international companies dealing exclusively with
business and sustainable development .
The WBCSD was created in 1995 in a merger of the Business Council for Sustainable
Development and the World Industry Council for the Environment and is based in
Geneva, Switzerland with offices in Washington,D.C. and Brussels, .
The WBCSD sees itself as a catalyst, both in the sense that it can catalyze business to
buy into the concept of sustainable development and to change the way they run their
operations. The organization also sees itself as a catalyst in the process of global policy
development, by representing and promoting the role of business in achieving
sustainable development.

B) INDIAN SCENARIO-

Increasing urbanisation, industrialisation and rising consumerism have led to

environmental degradation in India, particularly in urban agglomerations. Though the
necessary legislation for sustainable environmental management exists, the capacities,
know-how and experience for implementation are lacking or inadequate.
The Advisory Services in Environmental Management (ASEM) programme is the
umbrella programme for projects relating to industrial and urban environmental
protection. ASEM advises and supports the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests
(MoEF), and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs (MoCA) in resolving current issues and
implements projects with the aid of strategic alliances. Since 2008, ASEM has also been
advising and supporting the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) and the Ministry
of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation.
Objective
Enhance protection of the environment and natural resources in urban and industrial
areas and promote sustainable consumer behaviour.
There are many projects operating at micro & macro level in india and in world like-
• E-waste project
• Human resource Development project

STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT
MANAGEMENT FOLLOWED BY BICCO ARE-

It Follows Ten ways to Protect environment along with the development-

1. Prevent Soil Erosion

Soil is the foundation of the farming. But chemically fertilized soil is used
excessively for getting extra yield which causes the soil erosion.

2. Protect Water Quality

Water makes up two third of our body mass and covers three fourths of the
planet . Chemical pesticides (some cancer causing) contaminate the ground water
in polluting the primary source of your drinking water.

3. Save Energy
More energy is used to produce synthetic fertilizers. Organic farming is based
upon labour-intensive practices such as weeding by hand and using green manure.
Organic produce uses less energy therefore saving in energy.

4. Keep Chemicals Off Your Plate

EPA considers 60% of all herbicides,90% of all fungicides and 30% of all
insecticides are carcinogenic. Chemical Pesticides are poisons designed to kill
living organisms, and are also harmful to humans. In addition to cancer, pesticides
are linked to birth defects, nerve damage and genetic mutation.

5. Protect Farm Workers Health

A Cancer Institute study found that farmers exposed to Chemical Pesticides had a
six time greater risk than non-farmers. Pesticide poisonings among farm workers
have raised an average of 14% per year. Field workers suffer the highest rates of
occupational illness.

6. Support a True Economy

Organic farming is less expensive than conventional farming, conventional
farming do not reflect hidden costs include pesticide regulation, testing, hazardous
waste disposal & clean up, and damage to the environment, which in and of it, is
priceless.
7. Promote Biodiversity
Monocropping is the practice of planting large plots of land with the same crop
year after year. While this approach tripled farm production has left the soil
lacking in natural minerals and nutrients. To replace the nutrients, chemical
fertilizers are used which only compounds the problem.

8. Healthy Food
Organic farming starts with an abundance of nutrients in the soil, which leads to
the nourishment of the plant, which ultimately give true flavour, better taste and
healthy food. That's why many chefs use organic foods in their recipes.

9. Environment Friendly
Organic inputs are biodegradable, residual free, easy available, cost effective do
not effect the balance of nature and non pollutants.

10. Protect Future Generations

We receive four times the exposure of at least eight widely used cancer causing
pesticides in food. The food choice will impact our child's health in the future.

➔ Bicco mainly focusses on producing products which are eco-friendly and reduce
the consumption of those fertilizers, pesticides, micronutrients in the field of
agriculture which causes damage to the environment by replacing them with
biofertilizers,biopesticides,bio fungicides.

➔ These bio products are environment friendly because they are made by using
chemicals extracted from plants instead of harmful synthetic chemicals which are
non -biodegradable and causes biomagnification.
R & D ACTIVITIES

• R & D activities involve sourcing plant species that could provide alkaloids with
pesticidal properties and growth promoting substances. To this objective, there
endeavour invloves systematic screening of plant materials, noticing their insect
attracting attributes or defenses against insects, mites and pathogens along with
their growth patterns.

• In the next phase of there research, the micro-sites for specific plant parts storing
insecticidal compounds and growth promoting chemicals are indentified using
biochemical indicies. These sensitive plant microsites are next evaluated for their
functional efficiences such as in promoting growth of plant species other than
their own, and more importantly, for their insecticidal, miticidal and fungicidal
properties. In the final phase the more important of these compounds are
elucidated, identified and bio-assayed for their bio-effectiveness in specific
agroecological situations.

• Once the compounds of importance are identified, they are isolated and
integrated to produce formulated compunds for field evaluation. This part of work
involves interactions with national laboratories and agricultural universities in
India and abroad. A compound is given final shape only after extensive in-house
and out-house trials.

• There laboratories are equipped with most modern equipment, including Infrared
Spectraphotometers, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers etc. The laboratories
are being updated further with more sophisticated equipment including the
addition HPLC and related equipment.

• The second part of R & D activity involves quality control of all inputs they
produce, including the bio-pesticides, during different stages of their processing,
and in the pre-packaging stage, not only for the quality, but optimum shelf-life as
well.

world due to its delicate and superior flavor and unique aroma.
Tea breaks down into three basic types: black, green and oolong. In the world, over 90
percent of the tea consumed is black tea. Black tea undergoes a fermentation process as
part of production. Green teas are unfermented, whereas oolong is partially fermented.

Bicco can provide high quality tea in bulk, Such teas could be of your own choice of
grades or blends which will have all the attributes of highest quality and aroma.
CONCLUSION-
➢ Sustainable development is the meeting the needs of future generations without
sacrificing the needs of the present generation. It can be achieved by environment
management tools and techniques and by reducing human consumption by
controlling their population.

➢ Sustainable development is the major requirement of the today's world because

thereis the occurrence of change in climate which causes natural and man-made
disasters in many places of the world like sunami, catrina, hurricaneand loss to
many businesses.Due to this many steps are taken for sustainable environment
management.

➢ FOR this World business council for sustainable development is made at the
global level and in india Advisory Services in Environmental Management
(ASEM) programme is started.

➢ The agricultural sector in India is the largest sector in the country's economy. It
contributes almost 18.5% to India's GDP, while it accounts for about 13% of the
country's total exports. For the past couple of years (2006-07 and 2007-08), the
agriculture and allied sector saw a growth rate of more than 4%, comparing to the
growth rate of 2.5% during the 10th Five Year Plan. Due to this huge market
potential, Indian agricultural sector has become the home to a number of top
agricultural companies.
➢ But in the field of agriculture SEM is also required because there is a increase in
consumption of pesticides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers to increase yield but
these are made up of harmful chemicals and do not degrade easily. They are
harmful for the health of humans and other organisms and also causes land, air &
water pollution.

➢ Bicco does a good job in this field by providing organic products like
biopesticides, biofertilizers which are made up from natural and unharmful
chemicals .They are eco friendly and degrade very easily without causing damage
to human health and environment. They increase the yield at much higher level
than harmful chemicals. Its bulk tea,Bioneem ,Biofert , Teatonic are some famous
products.
