UCLA MAE 256F Homework 3 Summer 2020

Analytical Fracture Mechanics (MAE256F)

Prof. Vijay Gupta

Homework 3 - Due Date: 8/09/20, 11:59 PM

Problem 1

Prove for a bend-type specimen with the given load displacement curve (elastic-plastic behavior), the J-value
is given as,
2 × area
J= (1)
Bb
where, B is the specimen thickness, and b = W − a is the uncracked ligament length.

Problem 2

The two beam arms are loaded by moments M on a plate in plane stress (figure 2). Use the J integral to
evaluate G and hence show that if the material is isotropic and linear elastic,
√ M
KI = 2 3 3/2 (2)
h t
where t is thickness of the plate.

Problem 3

A thin elastic film is bonded to an elastic quarter space at high temperature (figure 3). Owing to thermal
expansion mis-match, the film is in a (biaxial) state of tensile residual stress of magnitude σ0 after cool-down.
Estimate G, when a  h.

ans: (1 − νf )σ02 h/4µf

Problem 4

Using plasticity correction factor discussed in lectures (i.e. defining an effective crack length) account for
crack tip plasticity effects for the following problem (figure 4) and calculate critical load Pc at fracture. The
elastic solution is,
P 1
σy (x, 0) = √ , |x| < l (3)
π l 2 − x2
The fracture toughness and yield strength of the material are, Kc and σys respectively. Compare your
solution with the elastic one and comment on the differences.
