Q. Defining the organizational culture and
environment

Organizational Culture:
“It is the shared values, principles, traditions, and ways of doing things that influence the
way organizational members act.”

In most organizations, these important shared values and practices have evolved over
time and determine that what employees perceive about their organizational experiences
and how they behave in the organization

Culture implies three things, first: culture is perception. Individual perceives the
organizational culture on the basis of what they see, hear or experience within the
organization. Second, even though individuals may have different backgrounds or work
at different organizational levels. They tend to describe the organizational culture in
similar term. That’s shared aspect of culture. Finally organizational is descriptive. it
concerns with how member perceive the organization.

Types of Organizational culture:

1. Strong culture is said to exist where staff respond to stimulus because of their
alignment to organizational values. In such environments, strong cultures help firms
operate like well-oiled machines, cruising along with outstanding execution and perhaps
minor tweaking of existing procedures here and there.

2. Weak culture where there is little alignment with organizational values and control
must be exercised through extensive procedures and bureaucracy.

The source of culture:

The original source of organizational culture usually reflects the vision of the
organizations founders. The founder establishes the early culture by projecting an image
of what the organization should be. They are not constrained by the previous customs.
And the small size of most new organizations helps the founder instill their vision in all
organizational members.
Organizational Environment:

“Organizational environment refers to the forces that can make an impact. Forces
made up opportunities and threats. Organizations dose not exist in isolation. It works with
the overall environment.”

Scholars have divided these environmental factors into two main parts as,

1. Internal Environment
2. External Environment

1. Internal Environment:

Organizations internal environment refers to the elements within the

organization. Internally, an organization can be viewed as a resource conversion machine
that takes inputs (labor, money, materials and equipment) from the external environment
(i.e., the outside world), converts them into useful products, goods, and services, and
makes them available to customers as outputs.

2. External Environment:

It consists of all the outside institutions and forces that have an actual or
potential interest or impact on the organization's ability to achieve its objectives:
Competitive
Technological
Political
Legal
