Learning Plan in COMPUTER 7

LESSON 4
DESIGN ELEMENTS IN WORD PROCESSING
LESSON OUTCOMES
After discussing the subject matter, the learners are expected to be able to:
1. Use the different tools in the contextual tabs.
2. Explore how to handle objects and elements in Word.
3. Explore the process of preparation using Word.
4. Appreciate the value of wireframing.
5. Explore the different ways of editing and manipulating images on the computer.
6. Import and export images within the desktop publishing system using the various file
formats.

1. LECTURE
A. Enduring Understanding
• Will there be an increase of alternative reading materials now because almost
anybody with a computer and a printer can produce them?

B. Content Standards
 Distinguish the different design elements used in Word
Processing.

C. Topic Outline
 Inserting Pictures
 Shapes
 Textbox
 WordArt
 Arranging Design Elements
 Formatting Elements

D. Performance Standards
 Use the graphical features of the word processing program.
 Create his/her own business card.

E. Intended Lesson Outcome

Appreciate the value of design elements in creating an effective visual
graphic using a word processor.

F. Teaching Techniques
The suggested teaching technique for this lesson is through lecture and demonstration with
individual and group written and hands-on activities.
G. Methodology
1. Review

Let the students define the following:

• Resolution
• Resampling
• Image Manipulation
Let them explain the advantages of a TIFF format over a JPEG format
when it comes to professional printing.

2. Motivation

Ask the class to examine the newspapers they have brought particularly
the front page. Among the elements in the page, which one caught their
attention first and why? Let the learners count the number of design
elements they noticed like shapes, lines, pictures, and columns. Explain
at this point that the creation of a functional and imaginative layout is
not done randomly but needs planning.

2. APPLICATION
A. Engagement Activity

Tell the learners to design the front page of a community newspaper.

Instruct the class to draft the preliminary design using the wireframing
method described in the book then ask them to execute the final layout
using a word processor. The learners can copy brief community articles
from the newspapers they have brought for text content and they may use
stock photos, scanned pictures, or clip arts for images.
B. Reinforcement Activity

Particular desktop publishing projects such as cards employ the same design
elements. For example, a greeting card design could also be applied to a business
card with a few minor changes in execution but the principles are constant.

Instructions:
Create a business card based on the sample and specifications given.
Here is an example of a business card with its specifications:
Answers:
The card was constructed through the following steps:
1. Set the margins at 0.5" on all sides.
2. Open the Illustrations Group in the Insert tab.
3. Draw a 2" x 3.5" rectangle.
4. Draw another rectangle and assign fill effects. Set the text wrapping to
“Through.”
5. Add the accent lines and modify their colors.
6. Insert an online picture to serve as a logo. Set the text wrapping to
“Through.”
7. Add the text box with no fill for the job title. Set the text wrapping to
“Through.”
8. Add the text box with no fill for the name. Set the text wrapping to
“Through.”
9. Add the text box with no fill for the contact details. Set the text wrapping
to “Through.”
10. Group the elements of the card and copy and paste to produce multiple cards
per sheet.

3. EVALUATION
Part A of Measure portion can serve as the evaluation.

4. SYNTHESIS

Ask the following questions for discussion purposes:

1. What other elements could you change in order to make the design appropriate
for your purpose?
2. How important is your design with regard to your occupation?

5. ASSIGNMENT

Enumerate the guides to effective visual communication.
