We are learning the meaning of this Kural in depth.
©¸Ò which is known as delusion or moha should be destroyed.
Delusion arises, due to lack of discrimination about the real
nature of life. Thus, this indiscrimination and lack of clarity is known
as ©¸Ò. We saw it in detail.
To get rid of delusion, we have to do our duties properly, nourish
our devotion towards God and be in the company of noble men of
wisdom.
Next, to get rid of C¸Ò or ignorance, one should learn the
scriptures, in a proper manner.
If ignorance is removed, what we get is ©õŒÖ Põm] & a clear
vision.
We can also understand this Kural like this -
©¸Ò}[Q ©õŒÖ Põm]¯ÁºUS, C¸Ò}[Q Cߣ® £¯US®.
©¸Ò}UP® -Getting rid of delusion. For this, we can take the
processes or Sadhanas described as Sadhana Chatushtaya
Sampatti in Vedanta Sastra.
Discrimination, Dispassion, Six-fold discipline (consisting of
mastery of the mind, sense control, doing one’s own duties, endurance,
sraddha, that is accepting the teaching as truth, and focus), Desire for
gaining the knowledge of Absolute reality and complete removal of
sorrow.
These are obtained, when delusion is removed.
This can also be presented as,
Discrimination between the eternal and ephemeral;
Dispassion (or non-attachment) towards the ephemeral;
Being careful about the quality, quantity and direction of thoughts
that flow in the mind; Healthy, pure mind;
A lifestyle of sense control;
Doing one’s own duties properly;
Endurance with respect to heat/cold, disease, joy/sorrow, especially
the strength to bear sorrow;
Trusting the words of elders and scriptures, intelligently, with proper
analysis.
Concentration of mind and
Desire to have the knowledge of absolute reality.
I have repeated this, for more clarity. These are the benefits gained
by the destruction of delusion.
If our mind has these qualities, we can understand that, our mind
is free from delusion.
©õŒÖ Põm] means clarity of vision, with respect to our
intellectual eyes. The vision becomes free from likes and dislikes,
ignorance, doubts and misconceptions.
To gain that vision, we have to learn the scriptures for a length
of time.
We are going to see this in this next Kural. Thus, we have to
learn the scriptures, that are to be learnt, under the guidance of a
Guru and gain knowledge about Absolute reality. Then, we will get
a clear vision.
In this Kural, the word C¸Ò has the meaning of ignorance.
We can also take the meaning of sorrow.
In the Kural,
AhUP® A©µ¸Ò E#US® Ah[Põø©
B›¸Ò E#zxÂk®
the word B›¸Ò refers to naraka or hell, indicated by utter
darkness. It is a symbol of sorrow.
If we gain knowledge with clarity in vision, then all our sorrows
will vanish and we will ever be happy.
I am not confusing, but I am trying to bring in, more clarity.
This is the order
©¸Ò }UP® & ©õŒÖ Põm] & C¸Ò }UP® & Cߣ® £¯zuÀ
Removal of delusion - Clarity in vision - removal of ignorance
- Removal of sorrow.
Not only that, our mind will be ever filled with happiness,
motivation and enthusiasm.
Tiruvalluvar has told a Kural in the next chapter AÁõ AÖzuÀ
(Removal of desires) as follows -
Bµõ C¯ØøP AÁõ}¨¤ß A¢{ø»@¯
@£µõ C¯ØøP u¸®
Desire can never be satisfied. Removal of those desires alone
lead to ever lasting happiness, which is our own nature.
We will contemplate more on this Kural and the next Kural
together, tomorrow.
