GESTECH – LEARNING MODULE

WEEK 2

LESSON 2: Intellectual Revolutions that defined society and Science and

Technology and Nation-building

In the previous lesson you have learned more about the

interconnectedness of science, technology, and society. Of course, this
will not be possible without the people behind it. Here, we will review the
intellectual revolutions that changed the way people perceive the
influence of science on society in general. It focuses on three of the
most important intellectual revolutions in history: Copernican, Darwinian,
and Freudian. By discussing these intellectual revolutions in the context
of science, technology, and society, you will be drawn toward the
complex interplay of the various social contexts and the development of
modern science. You will also engage in a analysis of ongoing
intellectual and scientific revolutions, which they may find themselves to
be part of.
This lesson situates science, technology, and society in the
context of Philippine nation building. It initially surveys contributions of
Filipino scientists to science and technology. It then traces the historical
development and impact of science and technology on the various
segments of Philippine society. These discussions are geared toward

revolutions which serves as an eye opener for the
READY, SET, GO! advancement of modern science and technology.
You will acknowledge Filipino inventor/scientist
which gives great contribution in building our nation
and life of the Filipino people.

10. Now in Pres. Duterte administration, science and
technology are not seen as priorities.

Task # 2 What’s the update?

GE: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY 3

GESTECH – LEARNING MODULE

Submit clippings/article from the newspaper about the current Philippine updates on
science and technology. Paste/write it below or you my use separate sheet of paper
and answer the process questions.

Process Question
1. What was the clippings/article all about?

2. Give you comment or your stand regarding the article you have chosen.

3. Based on your chosen article, how will help to upgrade or improve the science
and technology in our country?

END OF ACTIVITY
Your have a great idea! You may now proceed to the Analysis
part of this lesson.
Your goal in this section is to discuss the intellectual
revolutions of science and society and also you will identify

Task #3 Intellectual Revolutions and Society

Read the concept of this topic using Odilo Library Application found on page 2-20 of the
Science, Technology, and Society book authored by Serafica 2018, then answer the
following:
Process Question
What is the contribution of Copernicus in the philosophy of science?

Do you think though experiment is still useful in science in the present time?

Do you think the Church should intervene in scientific activities?

What is Darwin’s contribution to modern science?

How Darwin’s revolutionary theory influence the following fields in modern times:
 Economy
 Agriculture
 Political science
 Religion

GESTECH – LEARNING MODULE

By looking for other sources and literatures, what are the controversies or questions
on Freud’s ideas?

How can you describe Freudian ideas as a scientist?

If Freud is still alive, what do you think are the major changes he would make to his
theory?

You have just finished the activiity. Indeed, the scientific revolution
significantly changed how people study science and do scientific
activities. It inspired human creativity and critical thinking, moving Task #4
away from thought experiements to data-driven and experiment-
based ideas. You may now move to the next task.

Read the concept of this topic using Odilo Library Application found on page 21-34 of
the Science, Technology, and Society book authored by Serafica 2018, then answer the
following:
Process Question
What are the significant contributions of the Spaniards and Americans to the
development of science and technology in Philippines?

What can you say about the state of science and technology during the Spanish and
American Period?

How does school science shape science and technology in the country?

Identify several issues in the Philippines. What science and technology-related

policies could be developed and implemeted to slove these issues?

GE: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY 7

GESTECH – LEARNING MODULE

What can you say about the implementation of some science and technology policies
and projects in the country?

What are the laws related to science and technology in the Philippines from the year
2000? Was it still useful in the present? How are these laws implemented?

END OF ANALYSIS
You have just finished the analysis part of this lesson. Truly, through the
years many Filipinos were able to establish themselves as scientists and
science educators in various scientific areas and fields. Invention and
innovations were done by these Filipino scientists. Finally, the demands
of globalization, especially the ASEAN economic agenda, prompted the
Philippines to invest in science and technology programs and projects

Task #5 Other Intellectual Revolution

Aside from the three intellectual revolution, other intellectual revolutions also took place
across history in many parts of the world, such as North America, Asia, Middle East,
and Africa. Research on a particular intellectual revolution that took place in any of the

four geographical locations mentioned. Your output of your chosen intellectual revoution
must highlight the following guide questions:
1. What is the intellectual revolution all about?
2. Who are the key figures in the revolution?
3. How did the revolution advance modern science and scientific thinking at the
time?
4. What controversies met the revolution?

Process Question
What are your impressions as you go through this activity?

GE: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY 9

GESTECH – LEARNING MODULE

Are you satisfied with the kind of science and technology we have? If yes, why? If no,
suggest what action should the government or even us do to help and be a
contributor

Many of the Filipino scientist are greatly inspired by other

intellectuals, they are products of good school science. It means
they were taught and motivated by great teachers. Their
interests in science even started when they were young. Their
natural environment ignited their curiosity. Now, find out more
about them by doing the next task.

Task #6
The Filipino Scientists

Research atleast five (5) Filipino scientists and inventors, write his or her specialization,
and his or her most significant contribution. For your output, be guided with the following
guide questions:
1. How did these inventions and discoveries impact in the society?
2. How were these inventions and discoveries supported by the government?
3. Did these inventions and discoveries serve the public good? Explain your
answer.
