 SURTI BUFFALLO
Origin/distribution ,Identification and
Production potential :-
The Surti buffalo is a breed of water buffalo which
is found in the Charottar tract of Gujarat, India. It is
actually found between the Mahi and Sabarmati
rivers. The best animals of this breed are found in
Anand, Baroda and Kaira districts of Gujarat. It is
also known by many other different names such as
Surati, Gujarati, Nadiadi, Talabda, Charotar and
Deccani.
The body is well shaped and medium sized; the
barrel is wedge shaped.The head is long with
prominent eyes.
The peculiarity of this breed is very high fat
percentage in milk (8-
12per cent).

Characteristics:-

Docile temperament ,Regular breeder.
Two white colors round the jaw and at the brisket.
Short stature, Unable to walk long distance ,reared in
town-stall fed.

Utility of Surti:-
1.2kg milk yield /day.
Description of the body of Surti:-
FEMALE buffallo
Weight of the female SURTI buffallo around 400kg and
average height of surti buffallo around 125 cm.

MALE buffalo
Weight of the male SURTI buffallo around 500kg and
average height of surti buffallo around 130 cm.

Colour:-
Coat colour varies from rusty brown to silver-grey. Skin
is black or brown.The colour is black or brown.

Horns and Tail:-

The horns are of sickle-shaped and flat. The horns
grow in a downward and backward direction and
then upwards at the tip forming a
hook.Moderately long and flat.

Uses
The Surti buffalo is
a dairy buffalo
breed. It is
raised mainly
for milk
production
purpose.

Special features /Remarks

The Surti buffaloes are well adapted and generally
do very well in their local environment. They are
seasonal breeders and their first calving age is
between 45 and 47 months. They are mainly used
for milk production purpose. The females produce
between 1500 and 1600 kg of milk in their first

lactation. But milk production increases after the
first lactation. From second lactation they are able
to produce up to 1900-2000 kg of milk.
Generally calving interval of the Surti buffalo is
between 400 and 425 days. Milk of the Surti
buffalo is of very good quality containing about 7-
7.5 percent fat.
